Guy raises a lot of good points. So let's try something. Instead of bashing on a controller 99% of us haven't used (although almost every impressions I've read has been positive), how about we come up with potential ideas for the new controller? The following were all off the top of my head:
A few off the top of my head for FPS games:
-Obvious stuff, like having a radar, weapons, and/or utilities.
-Being able to control set up/control a UAV on the controller while still being able to monitor yourself on the tv and being able to move around and not leave yourself defenseless.
-Draw path for UAV or other remote controlled device on bottom screen.
-Setting up a spy cam(s) you can actively monitor and switch out of.
-Receiving live video feed from teammates.
-For the above 2, you could cycle among and switch out of the feeds, perhaps even displaying videos from several cameras or teammates at a time, like a multi-monitor security cam setup, always having the ability to return to the standard radar/weapons, view.
-Optionally displaying chat info on the bottom screen(for any genre of multiplayer game really).
Driving games:
-Standard DS style stuff, like map and inventory, if applicable.
-Rear-view mirrors.
-Other perspectives.
Sports:
-Play making and calling on the screen.
-For team sports especially, having different perspectives on two screens can be of great use, or just be nifty. See what a potential receiver sees while monitoring the quarterback as usual on the TV.
-Line yourself up more precisely with a fly ball baseball by following the outfielders perspective, earn extra accuracy by using the controller screen's perspective.
(MMO)RPG and Strategy games:
-The touch screen is probably most useful for these games, where having a bazillion options to choose from can be quite sped up.
-Select attacks and items easily via touch screen.
-Easily control troops in a strategy game. Pikmin!
-Keep an eye out at the rest of your peeps and settlements in a strategy game.
Misc:
-Smash can be terribly hectic with more than 2 players, you can watch your character up close on one screen, from far on the tv.
-I can already see Zelda puzzles involving using the extra perspective you gain, such as needing to align a crate so as to fit a criterion as seen by both screen's perspectives.
-For any game you could get a clean, completely cinematic view on the TV and have your HUD on the controller.
-Use microphone to play instruments.
-Do pretty much anything people came up with for the DS.
-Do more than people could with the DS, because that can only render 3D on one screen at a time.
-Use touch screen as keyboard(though it probably won't be much good at it)
-Use the controller to attack specific players in a multiplayer game.
-Use gyroscope and face tracking to allow you to peak around corners, or just shift the camera perspective a bit.
-Etc
I'm big on the multiple perspectives thing, since people don't seem to realize that you couldn't really do that with the DS.
Long P.S. about complaints people have had because I couldn't resist:
A couple of notes on usability. The controller is obviously light. People use kindles and a ipads all the time. I doubt this controller will have weight as an issue, and all impressions point towards it being quite comfortable.
I seriously doubt looking from the controller to your TV will be a serious issue. That's pretty much what millions do with their DS systems already. Hold a piece of paper in your hands. Try shifting your eyes from the paper to a TV or your computer screen. Not that big of a deal. Drivers do something similar everyday, with a nifty thing called rear-view and side-view mirrors(or actually, maybe they don't, given the way some people drive =P)
Finally, one key differentiation I want to make between this and the Wii, as it relates to other systems and third parties. The Wii1 is a pain for third parties, particularly those that do multi-platform games, mainly because it is way underpowered and is missing several buttons and an analog stick. To those that say the WiiU is more of gimmicksauce, keep in mind that at least now the "gimmick" truly doesn't have to be used at all, and that's a key differentiation. The wii was different by being both more and less than the other systems. Because it missed buttons and an analog stick, developers had to compensate for what it lacked, and got tired of it. The WiiU has virtually the 360 and PS3 have standard in terms of control, and more.
