I enjoy Fallout, but I'm more of an Elder Scrolls guy myself. I just like the variety in settings and towns, while Fallout necessarily lacks quite a bit of variety. But one way that Skyrim disappointed me was that I was anticipating Fallout 3's extensive dialogue options to carry over and I was bummed that they didn't. So it will be fun to have those again.
Fallout 3 certainly missed the mark on varying townscapes but New Vegas did not imo.
How ever New Vegas was absolutely boring in between towns (bland desert after bland desert settings) while Fallout 3 did a good job of mixing it up and making the areas between cities varied and very explorable(sp?).
There is a mod out there that requires both FO3 and New Vegas to work but it combines both games into one and connects the world similarly to how Pokemon Silver/Gold combined the 2 regions. It's such a nice middle ground and brings it closer to that TES feel of landscape.
I think TES is that wonderful middleground between what FO3 and New Vegas were the towns in vanilla are usually really nice and there are plenty of things to do in between as well.
Skyrim is so hit and miss though when it comes to Vanilla. Don't get me wrong its a huge playground except all of the toys in said playground are extremely similar. It just gets a little tiring to discover an area and its just another draugr filled crypt template dungeon.
In any case I hope FO4 makes it easy to toggle off waypoints and map markers. I know the modern game design approach "requires" these features to make the game more approachable but there is something nice about being to truly discover an area without your map, your minimap and your way marker compass thing at the top of the screen all but screaming "THERE IS A SECRET CAVE HERE". I just want to be able to get lost in a world again without having to wait for a mod to make that possible
