I dunno... My mum's in her mid 50's and I'd rather not see her in a swimsuit. <_<

I saw a hot 65 year old woman on some website not long ago.

My mind was blown. The world has changed.

To an extent, perhaps. But if a guy lived in a paradise with perfectly proportioned, curved, and fit women I don't think he'd start pining for Sally McFatass.

The example of men wanting thin women because of the rate of obese people in first-world countries isn't a good one. First of all, the average (happy, V?:monster:) guy is never going to prefer someone obese. Secondly, rising rate or not, obese women do not constitute the majority of women, not even close. So it isn't thin women are 'scarce'.

Tan was also mentioned, and that's always been interesting to me. In the western world, tan = hot. But in the eastern world (perhaps only far eastern, not sure) pale is far preferable. Is that due to scaracity? Or mainly cultural. Because its not like there are a lot of tan women in Japan, or a lot of pasty ones in the Mediterranean.

Thanks. :monster:

Your first point is well-taken. I also doubt that most men would go for the obese if it were scarce (despite some dudes out there who are into it). I also think I said first-world citizens are becoming more and more overweight, and not necessarily obese. Because you're right that the majority of women are not obese, but for American women, well over half of the population is overweight.

However, consider the fact that the standard of beauty was not always tan and thin, at least not in Western culture, and if Western art is any indication. Ideal women especially (such as Venus) were depicted as full-figured and what we might consider on the chubby side today, and without a speck of melanin in sight.

But how could this have been scarce? I think it has to do with wealth. This kind of physique for a woman suggests reproductive health, but also the ability to afford it. Wealthy women (and men) could afford to stay indoors and eat all day, as opposed to the less wealthy who generally worked harder, ate less, and spent more time in the outdoors (and therefore got tan and much thinner). There were probably a lot more peasants for every rich person, too.

That's not to say that wealthy = ZOMGhawt, but there may be something to that as well.

Despite saying all that, I do think you're right that there are other factors besides scarcity. Hormones, for one, which obey no social pressure.

Yeah, according to a Chinese friend of mine (which may or may not be a valid source. But she is actually from China) says the "rich people stay indoors so pale is hot" mentality is still the case over there. So there's definite truth to what you're saying. But I still dunno if that relates to scarcity or not.

I think there's definitely the whole "want what you can't have" on an individual level, but I dunno if it actually applies to entire societies.

We're probably right to be skeptical. There is always gray, and it is a good idea to avoid generalizing too much about groups of people, past or present, even if we're only trying to make sense of some cultural phenomenon.

And as was mentioned and apparent in this thread, we also know that attraction to somebody can be quite personal and unique.

Well of course, but the nature of the topic is referring to the overall social pressure, regardless of what individuals actually think.

Speaking of the topic. This one was rather loosely based on Final Fantasy to begin with, and now is pretty far off from the original topic, has been for some time. It's still a good discussion though and I don't want to stop it, so I'm gonna move this over to General Discussion.

I'm a bisexual girl. I love my bishes.
I find hairy muscular men repulsive. I find facial hair to be completely disgusting . Body hair is just plain revolting . You can keep the ugly cavemen. I don't know why any female would want a man that looks like and ape. too close to bestiality for my tastes.

I'd much rather date a girl than a roided up ape anyday.

That would be hilarious if true, but I don't think it is. I seem to remember both of them being on at the same time either yesterday or last night. I remember because I had to ban both of them. :monster:
