If I may, I would like to ask again what people think of the scarcity theory? In short: do pop cultures tend to idolize what they find scarce in their own populace?
To an extent, perhaps. But if a guy lived in a paradise with perfectly proportioned, curved, and fit women I don't think he'd start pining for Sally McFatass.
The example of men wanting thin women because of the rate of obese people in first-world countries isn't a good one. First of all, the
average (happy, V?
) guy is never going to prefer someone obese. Secondly, rising rate or not, obese women do not constitute the majority of women, not even close. So it isn't thin women are 'scarce'.
Tan was also mentioned, and that's always been interesting to me. In the western world, tan = hot. But in the eastern world (perhaps only far eastern, not sure) pale is far preferable. Is that due to scaracity? Or mainly cultural. Because its not like there are a lot of tan women in Japan, or a lot of pasty ones in the Mediterranean.
