Euro 2016

Surprised nobody brought up Euro 2016 in this thread.
Can I laugh about the Brexit that just happened thanks to Iceland? :P

I give points to England for their commitment to their Brexit. Ironically their women's team are the Euro champions, on account that FIFA don't give enough of a shit to do a tournament so the champion is decided by the European country that does the best in the previous World Cup which they also consider an Olympic qualifier.

I fucking love the Iceland team.

Also also: In other unsurprising news Argentina lost the Copa America final because Messi's forever destined to choke on international finals.

I was actually thinking of making a Euro 2016 thread yesterday :monster:

I've watched most of the matches up until now. And last night was just... incredible. I think my pulse was 100 throughout the entire match.

TIL HAMINGJU ÍSLAND!!!!!

Also... Italy can go fuck itself. GO GERMANY so you'll beat Italy and GO BELGIUM AND ICELAND

Right, I think this deserves its own thread :monster:

If any mods are up for it, I guess you could move the posts from the Sports Thread in here, starting with Mayo's post: here

Remaining matches:

June 30th: Poland - Portugal
July 1st: Wales - Belgium
July 2nd: Germany - Italy
July 3rd: France - Iceland

July 6th: Semi
July 7th: Semi

Now I'll abandon thread because of embarrassment over the entire England squad. :closedmonster:

Oh c'mon Joe at least you made it the knockout stage this time and weren't already eliminated by the third group stage game, progress!

I've been watching about half the games at the group stage and all the games since then. So far, speaking from the French perspective, we've been rather lucky - we've not played badly but we haven't played amazingly either, and we have yet to face a top team. I can't say getting Iceland instead of England is an easy draw, first because it's always difficult to handle games against a team so well-organized defensively, and second because underestimating the opposition is the first ingredient of inglorious defeats. IMO, Iceland this year pretty much has the same game plan as Greece in 2004 (though a bit less boring to watch).

What was very funny though is seeing how the "specialists" of football totally announced, at the end of the group stage, that Croatia would reach the final, and that the winner of Germany vs Spain quarterfinal would meet the winner of England vs France quarterfinal.

Obviously I'd hope France to go as far as possible and possibly win it, but our defense is looking too weak to accomplish that (our regular central defenders were injured and out for the competition). Our midfielders and forwards have lots of potential though, it's good to see that anyone could step up to win the game (Payet in group stage, Griezmann in the game vs Ireland).

Was in a pub full of Icelandic folk for the Iceland/England match. It was amazing :monster:

Also yes, very much pulling for Poland, if only because Portugal has Ronaldo, and he's a thunderin' dick

Yeah I was about to write 'Please Poland win, I want to be rid of Ronaldo' but I thought it was a bit too much

Completely agree'd :salute:

Impressed by Wales performance yesterday. They didn't win on an accident, they took the initiative, grabbed the game with both hands and were really clinical. All the goals were great. I hope that what Robson-Kanu pulled off will earn him a new club contract :)

Phew, that was a fairly equally matched... match, but I'm super happy Germany beat Italy. Yay!

I always feel bad for teams that go out on penalties though xD It's such a heartbreaking way to lose.

The Iceland match tomorrow may well be the death of me. So much stress ;_;

Penalties are always a bit of a lottery... in the old days, they were breaking ties with a coin toss - I suppose penalties are a bit better but not by much!

As for the Iceland game, it has more chances of being stressful for me than it is for you :P

^ Where u from, Mayo?

I'm super stressed for the Iceland match, but not as stressed as I was before and during the England match... because I knew England had a fairly young and inexperienced team, so I knew the task wasn't impossible. France, however... I'm just hoping for a nice, action filled game where Iceland gets to show more of their good team spirit, and maybe, maybe... maybe the days of miracles aren't over :monster:

As for penalties, it's a fair way of ending a fairly equally matched game. Better than said coin toss anyway :monster:

I really hope Iceland's success (cause hey, they have had a majorly successful tournament) is a catalyst for more investment in football over there. I hope they can carry this momentum with them and come back next time or maybe the tournament after next and just kick ass :monster:

They showed a feckton of promise this tournament and they have unmatched spirit

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate this

I have loved the Icelandic support throughout this tournament and the team have been am absolute joy to watch even against France they gave it their all and got two goals against them. Excellent work, excellent team 10/10 would support more than England.

I'm French, but I've been living in Western Canada for 7 years now.

Anyway, the game wasn't really stressful after all! I knew it was pretty much depending on how clinical we would be on the finish (before that game, we were holding the record of posts and crossbars for the competition - 6 in total) and scoring an early goal. It was pretty much wrapped up at half time. Credit to Iceland who "won the second half", while many teams would have resigned after trailing 4 goals behind.

Facing Germany will be a different story.

Apparently this Icelandic viking clap originated in Scotland. Either that or Queen. I like it either way :awesome:.
