Euro 2016

Bummed to see Wales go out. I was hoping for a final with two teams outside of the usual handful that always get there.

Still though, should be fun times :Monster:

^ As much as people enjoy watching a winning underdog, I think it's best when the winning team shows high football quality. For one thing, I don't know many people who look back on Euro 2004 and rejoice that Greece won. The 2002 world cup (where South Korea and Turkey reached semifinals) is also remembered as one of the poorest (if not the poorest) in terms of quality.
I'm not saying that an underdog cannot show quality though (Denmark 1992, for instance).

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! We're in the finals!

Although, somewhat lucky to get this result. Can't say we were better, but at least more clinical. Is it a German specialty to concede silly goals?

That second goal, good grief the German defence  T'is easy for me to say, mind. The unfit fucker watching them from the comfort of a sofa :monster:

Yeah Germany properly fucked itself over. I don't understand the point of not keeping your arms at maximum chest height when in your opponent's 16 meter box - there's nothing to gain from it; the referees have eagle eyes so if you're spotted it's a 100% penalty. And they manage to do it TWICE in one championship. dafuk!!

Also the second goal was, well, poor defense, but also France delivering when it counts. Washisname could have missed that goal easily, but he was in top shape and delivered.

Germany have a good enough team to play the way they did (starting out hard, trying to secure a goal during the first 20 minutes); a not so good team would have hung back on the defense trying to snatch the ball or rely on set piece situations, but Germany went all in. Which, you know, kudos to them, but they didn't play well enough to get away with it.

GG France :monster:

(But not the French supporters. YOU DON'T WHISTLE FOR THE OPPOSING TEAM WHEN THEY'RE POSSESSING THE BALL. You cheer for your own or you shut up. It was jut goddamn awful to watch, really unfriendly and terrible sportsmanship. 0 fucking points. It makes me want to not watch the finals. I guess they did it because they thought it'd take a lot to stop Germany and probably a lot of them were n00b football fans but still. It's not the way to go, it's making your country look bad.)

((Also, writing about football has made me realise it's one of those things where we're yet to start using English words for shit, I had to look up 'set piece' so excuse if it's not the right words to use XD))

^ The bit about booing the opposing team when they have possession: fair enough, it's bad cultural behavior. I say cultural because that's the way people behave in latin countries in general (in the broadest sense, from latin America to Portugal or even Romania), and the French have a bit of that latin side to them. Another example: most supporters would boo their own team if they under-perform (instead of... trying to encourage them more, I guess?). It's not a matter of n00b fans, the old ones are just as bad. All in all though, I find it odd you found it "awful to watch", because that's still nothing compared to the kind of atmosphere you'd find in Italy, Argentina, Greece or Turkey!

It's not odd, I'd find it equally or worse awful to watch if I went to said countries :desu:

I didn't know it's a thing in the southern countries though, so thanks for explaining that to me. In northern countries it's something that can happen, but there's a good chance it'll be commented on as poor taste. It's probably that Northern thing of staying polite and preferably avoiding conflict.

On topic I guess, people surely are different. I think this video pretty much sums up the cultural differences: https://www.nrk.no/sport/sjekk-den-...oligste-trener-1.13025099#1.13025102.151836ba
Some might say Lägerback doesn't care, or have no emotions, etc; but it's body language, it's cultural differences. It's like when Shademp posted this super emotional video about the VII Remake and someone commented "well, that was surprisingly understated" and I was like WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HE HAS ALL THE FEEEEEEELLLSSS

Anyway I guess I now understand the booing, but it still makes me uncomfortable when I have to watch it for 90+ minutes in a European tournament :monster:

America also boos the opposing teams and their own players and teams if they're playing really bad.

I'm in Fangu's boat of find the booing...odd? Or something. The Irish pretty much never boo their own teams. It'd be looked upon as very disrespectful. We fully expect our teams to be shite though so it's not as if we could boo them for failing to live up to their rep. We seem to sing when we lose.

The Fields of Athenry is the funereal dirge of all Irish sporting events, sang when we know we're fecked but we're happy we made it there in the first place.

Different strokes, I s'pose :monster:

Oh, I personally like the notion of respecting your opponent, and "always look at the bright side of life" in the face of defeat, I wish we had that in southern countries but culturally that's not going to happen (It's odd I'm saying "we in Southern countries" now that I'm half-Canadian :P and France isn't that much South). I guess the less negative approach we can have in latin countries is our own particular brand of self-deprecating humor (I'm supporting the club team of Toulouse in the Southwest of France because that's the region I'm from, and we're used to never winning anything in football, and there's a lot of that going on :P ).
As for cultural differences and how expressive people are: in comparison to Lagerbäck, have you seen how Antonio Conte was behaving on the bench? Cartoonishly Italian :D Reminds me of my times sharing an apartment with a Norwegian and an Italian: fun times!

I'm kinda bummed this is the last match of the tournament, I've enjoyed it immensely this year.

Pulling for France to win, partially because I just think after having such a shitty year as a nation, France deserve a lift. Something positive to rejoice in :monster:

I mean as much as I like France the waifu has Portugal in our work sweepstakes.... so yep.

COME ON PORTUGAL!!

but yeah France deserve the win and they have played exceptional all tournament as compared to Portugal who have seemed to have scraped through. It's just I want to win the sweepstakes. I mean I want my girlfriend to win, yeah, that.

Ronaldo :O

Wow, what's gonna happen now?? Griezmann doesn't seem to be in his best shape either...

Edit: RONALDO IS BACK and shut up French supporters that was clearly a pretty bad injury :@
Editt: Okay they're applauding him out thank you that was nice

They've turned me too! O_O They've become the gutsy underdogs! That goal was spectacular!

The ref totally fucked up that handball call on the French guy though, feel like that's going to be fixated on

Fangu

Yeah, luckily it didn't lead to a goal, that would have been scandalous :/

Congrats Portugal!

I was surprised when I found out Portugal had won until I found out Ronaldo only played 25 minutes then it made sense. Sucked for the guy though.

Well, obviously gutted by the result after having had most of the chances, but you always need to be clinical and a small bit of luck to win the games with high stakes. It just wasn't going our way. Well done Portugal. It seemed pretty clear to me that they wanted to "stay alive" and just patiently wait for France to tire out, and take advantage of their extra day they had for resting after the semifinals. No sense bitching about it since France had more days to recover in previous stages of the competition though.

And I'm (my girlfriend) is £60 richer wasn't an impressive finally but to be fair this whole tournament was a boring show of talent.
