^Always interesting to watch people with more casual knowledge of the game discuss things like that, lol. I'm impressed it didn't explode into full LTD. I guess that argument has been supplanted in the general FF7 consensus with discussions about whether Cloud is "emo" in the Compilation.

i spent most of my time being a fan with FF looking at it on the outside, so to many casual fans they see cloti as common and sensible as any other FF couple. i have seen some cleriths come out of nowhere and say stuff not too unlike "No, you're wrong" and try to prove their points, but the others just view them as sad and don't give them any more gasoline for the fire. it happens a few times in that thread, as a matter of fact.

Oh darn, I hope this thread picks up again. Can someone talk me down from the edge? I always thought Cloti was as canon as water is wet, but then I listened to the audiobook Case for Tifa, where she asks him if he loves her and he doesn't respond. He said nothing. NOTHING! Like what the ever loving f@#k, Cloud??? I really want to slap him for being either dense or an insensitive shithead! Ugh! Anyway, I'll admit I've fallen out of love with him a little bit and I feel like my ship is going the way of Titanic. If he was just depressed and PTSDing over not saving Aerith then that should be a totally different thing from his feelings for Tifa. I started getting the vibe that he loved Aerith and he can't get over her, so he cannot tell Tifa he loves her in return. Believe me, I don't want to feel this way. I really don't. Please put my angst to rest?

From what I understand, Cloud was asleep when Tifa asked that question. I reckon she asked it when he was knocked out in the first place because she was afraid of hearing his answer—it’s why she asks about Marlene instead when he’s fully awake.
But why would Tifa be afraid to hear his answer? You may or may not be wondering, haha, I can’t read minds!
Well, because Cloud hasn’t been his usual self. As you’ve said, his behaviour in CoT seems indicative of someone falling into a form of depression (and, considering all that he’s gone through, I think that’s totally plausible). I can tell you that when you’re in that dark place, you’re so convinced that you’re unworthy of anyone’s time or affections or love, that you begin to pull back from folks—often times especially the ones you care about most. You literally believe they’re better off without you. Cloud seems to have made himself prisoner of his guilt over what he perceives to be him personally failing folks that he cares about.
BUT THEN!!!
Advent Children happens and Cloud is absolved of this guilt. He and Tifa share a smile in the end as if to say, “That bit of nastiness is all behind us now. Now, it’s going to be alright.”
And then Cloud sees Aerith and Zack walk away together in that final, symbolic moment of self-forgiveness, for they were in the centre of his guilt in the first place. Cloud had convinced himself that it was his own fault that two very decent people who were very good to him lost their lives, but they sorta let him know that they don’t blame him.

Sure did. You know I listened to the audio version a few months back. I should go back and listen again, but I've been a total wimp and I'm afraid it'll get worse. I'm sick of all the innuendos and ambiguity around Cloud and Tifa. Even Tifa is cryptic. "Which is it, us or a memory?" Which memory? The memories he adopted from Zack? Is she talking about Aerith? If not why not just come right out and ask if she's still got a hard on for Aerith's ghost? Dammit. I took the entire AC scene as him having geostigma and him not wanting to put Tifa, Marlene and Denzel through the trauma of watching him die like he watched Zack and Aerith. But in the case for Tifa he goes on and one all emo about Aerith, and I'm thinking, "you asshole, Tifa is in pain here!" Mate, the remake had better add, AND ELABORATE, on the highwind scene.
