Favorite Dragoon

Freya- I. Love. Freya. Her design is one of a kind and
completely original. Her character was very deep with
the invasion of Burmecia and Cleyra and the response to
the reunion with her ex-lover. It was a total waste of
such a deep character after she rejoins the party in
Disc 3 as she doesn't hold much onto the story other
than wanting revenge. Sure, her talking with Amarant is
amusing but that deep character I loved in her vanished
as soon as you gained control of choosing the party. And
it seemed like her response to Fratley's condition was
not seen in her at all which it should have because it
devastated her at first, of course she brushes it off
for the war but it should have lingered and been made
present at times.

Yeah, I'd have to agree there. Freya's my favourite dragoon as well. Good thread idea too. Could have a thread on each job class stating our favourite character in 'em all.

Dragoon is my favorite Final Fantasy job class and the best one was...my Ramza.

:wacky:

...but failing that I guess I'll have to agree with Freya. From a purely gameplay standpoint, when you first get her she's crazy powerful, but her usefulness drops off considerably in the middle of the game. By the end, if you treated her well, she goes back to being very useful (especially against dragons), though she can't quite compete with Steiner's raw damage output.

Defiantly between Freya and Kain, I seriously find the Dragoon class the most badass class ever.

Love Freya, but Fang definitely wins it for me.

Trick question.

The correct answer is 'the one with the spear.' We also would have accepted 'anyone who uses the name Highwind at any point for any reason.'

Though props must be given to Ricard for starting it all.

It's a toss up between Fang and Cid, in both gameplay and character. Fang is awesome but Cid has tea. Also Fang is the strongest character in XIII but Cid is one of the few characters with a triple AP growth weapon. Freya and Kain are also good but I'm just not attached to them like the others.

Oh my gosh Richard from Final Fantasy II,
was I the only one upset that he died? Then again good bit of people died in FF2....

Not all of us have played FFII yet!

For me, Freya. I LOVE her character and her statuses.

I was having an argument with myself about this earlier today...I'm really stuck between Fang and Cid. They are both badasses, and I loved Cid's character in VII, but to be honest I didn't often use him in battles, whereas Fang was ALWAYS in my party (well, as often as she could be). I will probably just have to say Fang. (this is the condensed version of my musings from this morning :P)

For some reason, Dragoon classes don't resonate with me the same way most other classes do. Freya wins over Kain because WHITE DRAW and REI'S WIND. Cid and Kain are more customisable, I suppose, and you can make them know regen abilities and what have you but Kain takes Shapeshifting to a wholly new level and argh it bothers me. Even if he does have a sweet voice.

Okay, I love Cid because he lights a dynamite with his cigarette and cusses all the time.

...I don't know? Freya. The answer is Freya because rat people are cool.

Man I barely register Cid as a dragoon class. I barely register that there are classes at all in FFVII. So Freya takes it for me, because she's not just a great character, and not just a fun dragoon, but her presence alone makes FFIX a dragoon-game... I don't know how else to describe it, but that game is a dragoon-player's game.

I remember the cutscene before the Festival of the Hunt, where it had short montages of what everyone was doing the night before. And Freya had only been seen once or twice, in the bar and the throne room, and the screen fades in on the upward curve of the Theatre district, along the rooftops. And suddenly she leaps into frame from above, and you realize that she's jumping up and down Lindblum. That was actually one of the huge holy-shit moments in FFIX for me, where it wasn't just the job-class that was revealed, but the scope of the story and the world.

I agree that she was abandoned story-wise, although I would say even before Fossil Roo. Sure there was the one or two ATEs and the her and Amarant showdown, but looking back they were more like five seconds of "remember this character? Back in the party!" It reminded me of a good D&D game where one of the players moves away or something so the DM kind of keeps their character alive but doesn't know what to do with it. Freya is like a D&D character waiting for her player to return. If she wasn't such an essential party member for me, I might have considered her dead weight after Pinnacle Rocks. As a writer, I probably would have killed her off, either at the confrontation with Brahne or when the Invincible collects Alexander. And that's a shame, because the parts that the story focused heavily on her were some of the most compelling moments in FF history for me. Cleyra!

VII's classes are pretty much betrayed by their limit breaks. Since Cid's are all Jumps and 'dragon'-themed moves, I'd consider him a dragoon. (To say nothing of his surname) :monster:

I think it can be stated or safe to say if your last name is 'Highwind' your going to be somehow connected to the dragoon class I think.

Yeah but without the "Jump" ability he somehow never feels like a real dragoon. Nor does Tifa ever feel like a real monk without Chakra abilities, or Yuffie a thief without the aid of materia. As far as I'm concerned in FFVII and VIII everyone is a red mage.

I still kind of ascribe roles to FFVII even if they are catch all characters. It always made sense to me. Aerith is a white mage because healing wind, Cid is dragoon because his limit breaks have themes of jump (jump/hyper jump/dragon drive), and Yuffie gets equipped with the throw materia as soon as you get her, Vincent is a beserker because duh, and Cait Sith is a gambler.

Most of this is just a rationalization so I can make Tifa a monk so I can say she's the first major playable female monk character.

Kain Strife

Ah dragoons, they are my favorite class. I wish to do it justice some day in animation. Anyways, Kain will have to be where I reside. Nuthin but his fighting skills and making leaps and bounds. Although Fang taking down that Wyvern in that one cutscene was pretty hawt.
