The scene at the Temple of the Ancients, after Cloud hands the Black Materia over to Sephiroth, is usually stolen by the uncomfortable fact that Cloud proceeds to beat the shit out of Aerith. This piece of fanart however encapsulates the genuinely heart-wrenching moment when Aerith tries to calm Cloud after his mind is broken to pieces because of Sephiroth's mind control over him.

for the explanation why cloud looks so weird, it's because it's a fan interpretation of the moment when cloud says he'll believe whatever tifa says no matter what, when sephiroth manipulates both their minds. in my own head i figured cloud said that with confidence, but seeing this version i'm leaning to this being more accurate. after all he probably would be very desperate after sephiroth messed with his mind, and now he's so shook up about it he relies completely on tifa to confirm his existence. link below:
this situation makes tifa look much more sympathetic in her choice of this time in the game rather than her being shoved into a vaccum without context ("SHE LIED!!!!!"), because if anyone cared to see what was really going on here, she's stuck with two awful choices in an awful situation. sephiroth has forced her to face her nightmares in real time once again; she's reminded of her home burned, seeing her father die, and the man responsible is standing right in front of her, teasing her and her friend. she is also woefully confused on how cloud remembers the fire let alone so accurately when he wasn't there, and then is forced to tell cloud he was there (which is a lie in her POV) or else he would lose all hope of himself. i was just talking with this guy a week ago on this, on why he looks a tifa in a vaccum on her lying, ignoring her PTSD literally being triggered and brought back to life, sephiroth taunting her, cloud telling her to confirm his very existence as a person when she doesn't understand anything that is going on. all this pressure and she's supposed to what? tell her truth? send cloud off to sephiroth? because even if she did, guaranteed she'd get even more hate ("Why did she tell him the truth?!? Does she care about him at all?!? I would have lied to keep him!!").

The accusations of Tifa "lying" or somehow being at fault in any way have always seemed absurd to me. There's all that above, but even more so the fact that people seem to forget that she herself experienced the same profound psychological trauma, but also barely even survived the night. Her ass blacked out and was in a coma (again) for weeks or months and woke up alone on another continent with no idea (until half a decade later) how she even managed to get there.
If ol' dude shows up and is like, "I was there, the whole time, actually." The only logical explanation (from her perspective) is that she herself was remembering wrong. There's no guarantee that she has that she herself isn't suffering from fucked memory.

It's not like there's an easy answer. There's no manual for 'is my childhood friend a figment of my imagination that was implanted in my memory by a shapeshifting alien'. Lie or not, Sephiroth would spin it the way he wanted.
