FF VIII Remaster [Available Now!]

I got VIII on PS4 after getting the most annoying platinum trophy (IX) shortly before. I've been meaning to dig in for a while, I think the last time I did a full playthrough of VIII was a few years ago on Vita, and it was the original Playstation version (obviously).

Does it have true analogue movement btw or is it 8-directional? This was a problem in FFIX. Also, is the World Map the down-ressed PC bug version?

EDIT: Never mind I googled it. As expected, the bugged world map from the PC version is in this remaster. Goddammit man.

Aesthetically, it’s pretty rough. Nearly all the hiccups from the PC version are there, including the magic-wand transparency in the battle backgrounds, the horribly pixelated pre-rendered backgrounds, and yeah the world map texture errors. The menu colours are properly blended, though! lol

When I first saw the trailer I bemoaned the Advent Children-style redesigns. Squall in particular looks like a chibi version of himself. His hair is no longer hanging heavy in his face, it’s practically flying off to the sides. His fur coat is also way too fluffy/spiky, looks like Naruto. His body animations are unchanged and still have the weightiness, but his textures are floating in space. I would take the pixelated PC Squall over this new one any day. Quistis also got some rhinoplasty which makes her look like very bland. The redesigns really lack character overall. Very samey and plastic.

This isn’t game-breaking enough to not recommend the Switch version though. If PC modders make a “Moguri Mod” for FF8, it will probably have an edge, but honestly being able to play Triple Triad on the bus and then get home to play the story sequences is like #1 what the Switch is FOR.

I think the PS4 version does the most in fixing the pixelated and jagged texturing errors of the PC version. But I could be wrong.

There are some errors still present, like Headmaster Cid looking like ass next to the updated models of the main characters and stuff. But overall, the music, the frame rate, GF models, battle backgrounds, and other things look/sound so much better than anything the PC version ever did.

The main thing that I was happy about was the removal of the shitty MIDI music. The soundtrack is the proper FFVIII PSone soundtrack.

Definitely. One of the best all time scores and rivalling even the works of classical masters. Modding the PC soundtrack was non-optional back in the day. I still dream of live instruments replacing the symphonic samples, but that’s unlikely to ever happen. In the meanwhile, I’m really grateful the OG soundtrack was preserved in high enough quality to include with this release. The MIDIs were just shameful.

Edit: they sensor Siren?? What do they put in front of her? At the rate I’m going, Squall’s gonna get washed out from Garden for playing cards until he turns 20.

if you want to see some roughness look at some of the background characters who were literally part of the background and stand out real bad with the updated graphics (the first classroom scene and pedestrians in deling city in particular)

but as long as the story is still there, i can manage :sadpanda:

I think they censored Siren because her feather-bush crotch was an effective censor for PSone era graphics, but with higher fidelity GF models, it now merely just looks like Siren's straight up exposing her vag. :monster:

I mean, it's not a 4Kids-esque censor-job so that's good. It looks fitting so I don't really care. Besides I have the real Siren on my figure shelf anyways so... :awesome:
