FF7 Remake "Multi part series"

I'll be angry with you Splintered.

Or, at least, I'll pat you on the shoulder to make you feel better while you are angry.

I'll just sit here in denial trying not to let the excitement die.
Thanks Tennyo, you are a good person

If it was sequels and spin offs why would they announced it so vaguely? Why announce it on a random Monday that no one is expecting, instead of something big, or whatever.

Unless they want me to be angry. Thus my anger is vindicated.

Let my frustrations flow.

It's hard to tell what exactly this means, but I think the obvious plus of releasing the game in parts is that we'll probably get our hands on the game a lot sooner than any of us were expecting. From a developmental standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. FFVII is huge. Now they don't have to worry about rushing the product as much, and they'll start making their money back before the game's even finished.

The logistics of how Square's going to release this and WHERE in the game they're going to decide to break up the story are the big questions. How is this going to affect the game being open-world?

It's funny, when the remake was announced my brother made an off-handed remark about how they should release the game like this and now it's happening.

EDIT: And I wouldn't take the phrase "its own unique experience" all too seriously. It sounds like lame, weightless promotional jargon.

Because rushing a game out has always panned out amiright.

SE are a d*** and will always be a d*** (sorry for this). For god sake the game & story is almost 2 decades old and mostly FF fans heck even gaming in general already knew about the whole story or whatsoever of FFVII and they want this to be release in parts? The quality of employees SE had right now is completely dropping. After hyping the game with a new gameplay trailer you announced this????Lame....

Well I'm staying optimistic. For starters, we don't have a clear idea of what they mean by "multi-part." We should demand clarification instead of feeling bitter. Now let's say it is episodic like a Telltale game series. We don't know yet what a AAA episodic series looks like, so it could be more detailed and fleshed out than others before it.

I understand the reasons behind this business structure. I'd argue that FFVII is bigger and more diverse than The Witcher 3, so developing it would be a massive project spamming years. If it wasn't broken into pieces, we could end up with a game as linear as XIII, and that'd be a real waste.

Well, the whole point of the second half of what I said was that they can pace their work better. Yes, they're pushing for the game to come out sooner, but they'll also have a little more room to breathe developing the game incrementally.

All the episodic games I've played are incredibly linear, I actually feel like episodic games lend themselves to linearity. XIII was linear but XIII-2 wasn't and LR was pretty much an open world where the story could be progressed in chapter you wish. They should have learned their lesson then.

I was curious as to how much exploration will be in the remake considering the original is so massive.
If they do what they did with Dimensions, you're basically unlocking more story (and thereby more of the game) as you progress from episode to episode.

In Dimensions, each episode would carry you through a portion of the game's story and add a new chunk of the world to explore. It allowed you to backtrack through caves and dungeons, revisit old towns, and so forth, you simply couldn't progress further through the game than the current episode. I believe they also had a level cap.

Each episode also had additional content that you could play through after completing it. Like challenges, hard mode dungeon, etc., which woud allow you to grind levels and get better equipment, spells, whatever.

I'm still optimistic about this.... I'm still grateful that they're remaking the game at all and allowing us to revisit this world. I'll never be that person who says "Do it right or don't do it at all."

It's VII. Nothing can ruin it.

I will say that this might be the most damning part of releasing this game episodically. Given that the game's episodic, I feel like that's their cue to take out all of the open world elements. Unless the episodes take up HUGE chunks of the game, which I don't think they will, we're looking at a very linear FFVII remake. :c

I'm just happy we'll get to play this is in some form in our lifetimes still. and if Ep 2 is the nibelheim flashback we might get more Sephiroth, Zangan and cowgirl tifa content then we would otherwise.

On one hand I'm very disappointed it'll be split up. On the other, it would allow them to focus solely on and release the first volume sooner than later (one presumes).

Maybe there won't be a collector's edition at the start, but at the end, with a decked out (no decals!) PS4 in that bundle.

FFVII is already mostly linear.

If you break the game into chunks, what you'd have is something like...

Episode 1: Opening through the escape from Midgar
Episode 2: Kalm through Jenova BIRTH
Episode 3: Costa del Sol through Jenova LIFE
Episode 4: Corral through Jenova DEATH
Episode 5: Endgame and Final Dungeon

It's been a while since I've played the game so I forget exactly how it flows, but I think that feels about right.

Each episode would unlock a chunk of the game world, starting with Midgar, then the Eastern Continent, eventually granting you the Tiny Bronco, then the Highwind, and ultimately the ability to roam the world doing the final sidequests, superbosses, and final dungeon.

If they do it that way, I think the game itself will turn out perfectly fine when it's all said and done.

Well, if you think about it, the original game was split up onto three discs due to the whole massiveness of it. Sure, you got all three discs at the same time but... it was split. (lmao)

BUT.

It'd be cool if they released a sort of Disc 1 experience, Disc 2 experience... I'm just not sure how the whole open world would be. I mean, scale wise, the vehicles in FF7 traveling over the green fields of grass and such wouldn't work in this remake. They have to do something different there. Also flying in the Highwind... Man, I feel sorry for the actual staff that HAS to figure this out because I can't. LOL

It wasn't split into discs due to game size. All of the discs have the same game on them the only thing you are changing out when swapping to disc 2 etc. is the FMV's and text loaded on the disc.

Not sure if you could originally do it on PS1 but on an emulator you can load in Disc 1 while playing Disc 2 content and it will be playable it will just not load text and will load in the wrong FMV once you trigger a cut scene.

The same pretty much applies to all other PS1 multi disc games.

MGS is a 2 disc game that can be beaten in 3 hours :monster:

Thanks. I've always been grateful for the idea of a remake. They could probably remove Aerith and I'd still be gushing at the wallet for the game.

well, okay I don't really mean that they could NEVER remove her

....but I'd still play it if they did

Honestly, I could live with this. I don't love it, but it would be acceptable. The bigger issue with that, for me, would be that you know the collector's edition and shit will come out after they've all been released. But I'm not going to reward this behavior by buying it twice. But how the hell am I supposed to sit around and listen to everyone talk about the chapters as they come out if I decide to wait?
