I have a thought about President Shinra's comments on SOLDIER with reduced lifespans.

It's noted that in a post-Lazard, post-Mass Defetio SOLDIER, the numbers needed filling. Heidegger seems to have even merged a lot of SOLDIER equipment with Public Security equipment. SOLDIER has, narratively, lost its edge and uniqueness.

Later in the game, S and G type SOLDIER are acknowledged. Based on what we can know, S-Type SOLDIER are directly injected with J Cells in the vein of Sephiroth's origin. It's known to be a procedure that needs a strong mind, will and body. Creating S Type SOLDIER must be difficult and time consuming. Recall that Cloud couldn't get in to SOLDIER in the OG for that reason.

G Type SOLDIER, however, skip the difficult part. They're injected with the cells of someone who has ALREADY had J Cells implanted into their body. And has, presumably, already 'sterilized' them in the human immune system where the dangers of S Type treatment are no longer a factor. G Type SOLDIER are presumably then much easier to create. Genesis was able to create an army, after all, purely using his own cells.

We can assume G Type SOLDIER are easier to mass produce based on the above. This accounts for the once great SOLDIER now being much easier to kill NPCs . But also , we know that G Type SOLDIER can fall victim to degredation, much like Genesis and his cohorts.

I imagine the President's speech was true. From a certain point of view. The majority of SOLDIER now would be G Type.

"From a certain point of view" always reminds me old Ben Kenobi and it stirs up a laugh that I cant explain.

Thats a very interesting piece of information.
Cloud went with the procedure of a G-Type SOLDIER? I dont exactly recall.

Cloud was given a regular S-Type Procedure by Hojo because they knew Cloud would 'wash out' and thus become a mindless puppet for the Reunion theory.
He may have also been given some 'S-Cells', though, now I come to think of it. So maybe Cloud is a little bit of both...?

Either way, I have my doubts that they'll leave it with a big downer like that. And if I'm not wrong, some former SOLDIER turned up in one of the novellas?

Airbuster severely kicked my ass several times and I loved it. I definitely struggled the most with the last phase. The camera still isn't my friend when it's semi-locked in place like that. Mostly though, I struggled to get away from the Tankbuster beam. At one point, when I'd finally managed to avoid it, the other party members just wouldn't (couldn't?) move out of the beam and fell unconscious at the same time.

I think this felt like the most fun chapter so far - even though I've read a few complaints from people who said it was repetitive. I get that; but I love the way they took elements from the original and turned what was basically a retread of the original bombing mission, into something new. I like the mechanic of dismantling parts of the boss fight. If only I could've dismantled that fucking Tankbuster beam, then I wouldn't have had to do the fight four times and die with 5% of the boss' health left each time...

Anyway - loved the fight. The boss music slaps (did it show up in chapter 4 during the Roche fight, or is this the first time?)

am I the only one that didn't have much of an issue with air buster? I think I am coming into this game after playing several difficult/reflex heavy stuff that the combat is feeling a bit easy. I have game over'ed in a couple of regular encounters because I turned my brain off and got spam happy tho, lol :monster: I assume you unlock a hard mode once you've finished? I'm looking forward to fighting this boss again :D

I think everything that I could say about this chapter has mostly all already been said. Air Buster was set up so well, I enjoyed being able to choose what should be thrown away and what should stay, and I managed to beat this battle in one go and not have to retry 5 times which is nice.

I GASPED when the president brought up the cellular degeneration bit. Crisis Core is canon confirmed?

On the cellular degeneration bit - I didn't really take it as "confirmed Cloud totally has a shortened life span." I took it as a nod to Genesis. The way he responds with "yeah that's right" gave me the impression that Cloud doesnt know jack and is totally going along with it as part of his ruse.

I guess time will say for sure tho!

As of Crisis Core, Cloud was injected with S-cells, they had reaction with him, unlike Zack who was already mutated with Jenova cells by the normal SOLDIER treatment. Genesis went after Sephiroth because his cells specifically can't degrade. Cloud is safe from the fate President Shinra describes.

Welp, that went downhill fast. They went for overt social commentary, at the cost of undermining everything the characters have done so far in the game.

You thought you were hurting Shinra? Well, only because they allowed themselves to be hurt, in fact they deliberately destroyed their own stuff because you weren't doing enough damage.

AVALANCHE doesn't exist because they're skilled and dangerous, they exist because Shinra allows them to exist. Everything these characters have done happens because it was allowed to happen. Everything Jessie, Wedge, and Biggs have sacrificed was for nothing, it was all part of Shinra's (bad) plan.

This doesn't even end up making Heidi and Prez look good, because even with all their advantages they still couldn't get the robot ready on time. Every character ends up looking worse than they need to be, and a big chunk of dramatic tension goes with it. Honestly, it's like they took one aspect of Heidi and Prez and made it their whole character.

I'm sad that the Prez showed up as a hologram. While technically it doesn't make sense to appear in person, it shows that he's an honestly brave man for all his faults, like Rufus.

Televising the terrorist attack makes any future 'blending in' missions these people have to do more implausible.

Got through airbuster first try, but it was close. Got first door button minigame easily, went 'hah, this is easy' and struggled a lot with the second door.

Hmm, those grappling guns didn't see much use through the chapter.

Barret ends up being very likeable throughout, bolstering the team through what they think might be their inevitable execution. I feel like he would not be able to actually carry Tifa away if she was resisting.

Technically, IIRC Shinra only explicitly "televised" one clip from the reused footage from the Reactor 1 raid. And both Cloud and Tifa don't appear in that clip, only Biggs, Wedge, Jessie, and briefly Barret do. So it really only stretches the suspension of disbelief in regards to Barret not being ID'ed by the public. Though Barret's conspicuousness pushing the suspension of disbelief has always been an element of the story even in the OG (though the Remake does trying to "explain" some of it by having the Slums watches exist, so it makes Slums dwellers carrying around heat a more common occurrence in Midgar, but even that only goes so far).
