One of the things that I noticed when I was watching the Famitsu footage earlier today is that the Flashback fight against the Materia Keeper is in the same place as the original game, except that Cloud & Sephiroth are pushing the fight UP the tiers until at the last phase (
around 8:14) it jumps to the very top intersection of all the Mako Reactor Pipes:

This makes me think that we're likely to revisit this particular map when Cloud & Co. go to Nibelheim, and the damaged pipes along with the Reactor now being mostly defunct will give the opportunity for the slide exploration again to access places that were maybe in the flashback but not accessible. Likely there may even be some additional context clues that slightly differ in reality from the way that the flashback portrayed things, since the flashback is Cloud's recollection of events (which has all the feeling of a self-insert fantasy of how Cloud imagined joining SOLDIER to be like Sephiroth would have gone based on his external perception of those interactions between Zack & Sephiroth playing into his own desires). I think that how this is also emphasizing a connection between Cloud & Sephiroth, while de-emphasizing the one between Cloud & Tifa is going to be a huge factor in how and why Cloud is being made to doubt his understanding of reality and who to trust throughout
Rebirth.
I especially appreciated how whenever Cloud and Sephiroth talk, Cloud moves with Zack's mannerisms, as well as how the dialogue mentions him wanting to be a hero and Sephiroth referring to him as a puppy. It reminds me a lot of the opening of
Ever Crisis with Cloud fighting against Sephiroth in the Mt. Nibel reactor only to become Zack as he continues the fight. I think it'll be especially interesting throughout this sequence to see how Cloud & Tifa interact very differently than you'd expect them to, since this is the first time that we'll be seeing subtle mannerisms and things like that realistically displayed, and how much different things like that will feel when you see the party going back through those locations again, and something FEELS off in the same way that subtle details about the rebuilt Nibelheim are just ever-so-slightly wrong.
The other surprise to me was earlier on in the sequence where you get to see the Materia Fountain, it's got COMPLETELY different colors. Rather than being a tiny little piece of what seems like the warm lifeforce of the Planet shining through beside an old dying little wooded area growing in the sunlight of a canyon, the version in
Rebirth is extremely cold in its color palette with none of that sense of warmth at all.

Overall, there's a TON to enjoy about this, and I think that the way that this is redesigned to focus on building those themes rather than just sticking to the Green Dragon that stopped the troop transport is a really good idea.
Tons more thoughts about all the Junon stuff, but I'll probably dig into that tl;dr a bit later.
