Note: Almost all of this comes from focusing down on Max's videos specifically. If there's stuff missing from this or easier to see on others that I'm vague at that's why.

New "First Strike" mechanic. I wonder if the "First Strike" materia from Remake still exists

Yeah, the First Strike Materia is still in play. It's description still seems to be the same so it's unclear if the Fist Strike mechanic is tied to it or not.

And there is double elemental magic materia (Fire and Ice)???

In another person's experience I also saw Lightning and Wind Materia. Funnily enough I was thinking between the date announcement and this that combining certain Materia might be a thing, though I speculated it'd be player done like as a take on the Master Materia concept.

It makes sense: element based Materia will fill up 4, 5 if they bring back Earth, slots by itself which is practically one person's entire set. Even spread out, when you start adding in the new Gambit-esque Materia, the Cure-All's and the rest of the 'basic' sort you'd barely have room to play around with anything.

As for new OG Materia I saw that Morph, Throw and Comet came back! Throw has been renamed to Spare Change since the actual 'Throw' ability it's named for isn't a thing anymore but it's there. Also, slowing down Max's video showed that Comet 2 is now called Cometeor and I just find that funny.

Sorry for the double post, but just saw this great Twitter thread of monster comparisons by CCO.

So aside from the very good work provided on the pre-Demo materials by Cosmo Canyon Observatory:

In the Nibelheim flashback we get the Insectoid Chimeras, the Kimura Bugs of OG, who are a bit out of their way on Mt. Nibel but since most of the enemies there are repeats it's a fair enough substitution.

The humanoids that were new and unidentified are Orcs and the Wayward Wolves are now Grasslands Wolves because they're in their natural habitat. Zemzelett show up in the Junon area, they are also shown to have a World Report variant alongside Wolves, Elphadunks and Zu, though it's named after the Tonadu palette version.

There are also 'Fleetwings' a bird type enemy which I'm not entirely sure on. In a fight with a Zemzelett there's also smaller enemies called 'Ignilisk's, which are really hard to make out due to Max focusing down on the Zemzelett. I think it's a renamed Nerosuferoth looking at footage he shows later of him starting the fight.

One of the things that I noticed when I was watching the Famitsu footage earlier today is that the Flashback fight against the Materia Keeper is in the same place as the original game, except that Cloud & Sephiroth are pushing the fight UP the tiers until at the last phase (around 8:14) it jumps to the very top intersection of all the Mako Reactor Pipes:

Mt_Nibel_Pipes_Map.pngScreenshot 2023-09-21 at 10.54.14 PM.png

This makes me think that we're likely to revisit this particular map when Cloud & Co. go to Nibelheim, and the damaged pipes along with the Reactor now being mostly defunct will give the opportunity for the slide exploration again to access places that were maybe in the flashback but not accessible. Likely there may even be some additional context clues that slightly differ in reality from the way that the flashback portrayed things, since the flashback is Cloud's recollection of events (which has all the feeling of a self-insert fantasy of how Cloud imagined joining SOLDIER to be like Sephiroth would have gone based on his external perception of those interactions between Zack & Sephiroth playing into his own desires). I think that how this is also emphasizing a connection between Cloud & Sephiroth, while de-emphasizing the one between Cloud & Tifa is going to be a huge factor in how and why Cloud is being made to doubt his understanding of reality and who to trust throughout Rebirth.

I especially appreciated how whenever Cloud and Sephiroth talk, Cloud moves with Zack's mannerisms, as well as how the dialogue mentions him wanting to be a hero and Sephiroth referring to him as a puppy. It reminds me a lot of the opening of Ever Crisis with Cloud fighting against Sephiroth in the Mt. Nibel reactor only to become Zack as he continues the fight. I think it'll be especially interesting throughout this sequence to see how Cloud & Tifa interact very differently than you'd expect them to, since this is the first time that we'll be seeing subtle mannerisms and things like that realistically displayed, and how much different things like that will feel when you see the party going back through those locations again, and something FEELS off in the same way that subtle details about the rebuilt Nibelheim are just ever-so-slightly wrong.

The other surprise to me was earlier on in the sequence where you get to see the Materia Fountain, it's got COMPLETELY different colors. Rather than being a tiny little piece of what seems like the warm lifeforce of the Planet shining through beside an old dying little wooded area growing in the sunlight of a canyon, the version in Rebirth is extremely cold in its color palette with none of that sense of warmth at all.

Overall, there's a TON to enjoy about this, and I think that the way that this is redesigned to focus on building those themes rather than just sticking to the Green Dragon that stopped the troop transport is a really good idea.

Tons more thoughts about all the Junon stuff, but I'll probably dig into that tl;dr a bit later.

The colors are reminiscence of FF7 OG pre-release pictures.

Pretty sure that part will also still happen at the very beginning lol.

Not having the scene inside the truck and the Green Dragon fight would be lame. Always liked how dark that segment looked. Heavy rain, ominous "beating-heart" music.

I was always bummed that Crisis Core skipped the truck scene...haha. The dragon bit would have been less relevant, I understand, as Zack was in less awe of Sephiroth by that point. But truck part itself I always liked.

As such I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped it here, unfortunately, but I think it'd be a super cool, moody fade-in to start the game.

What about the Tiny Bronco plane? Can we expect to see that too?

Of course, the Tiny Bronco will appear too!

Due to the events of the story, the time that it can actually fly is very short, but you can still use it after the wings have been damaged to cross the oceans freely - just like in the original game.

Still grappling with how big this game is.

I'm also toying with the idea that maybe the Temple of the Ancients could be moved to the northern continent, or merged with the Forgotten Capital entirely. That way it can serve as a final dungeon of sorts.

If the Temple of the Ancients is geographically separate and players still need to pass through Bone Village afterwards, then the final dungeon options are either an expanded Sleeping Forest or an expanded Forgotten Capital. Which sure, I guess could work.

But I find this progression to flow better: Gold Saucer date -> Bone Village -> Sleeping Forest -> Temple of the Ancients -> Forgotten Capital. That way you just travel north after the western continent. It streamlines things slightly.

Hell, just place the temple in the Sleeping Forest. That could be why archeologists have gathered there. To investigate the myths surrounding the Ancients.

Is this game a dream? How on earth did they pull this off? No wonder they've been so forthcoming and confident in interviews - they've clearly got something very special and they know it.

The wait for this is gonna be excruciating.
Just rewatched the TGS stream again and just...man, that map size. The activities! MOOGLE HOME EXISTS IN THE WORLD.
Beck's Badasses are back! Chadley is back! Where the fuck is Roche! Surely he's gonna challenge Cloud to a G-Bike 2P arcade race but I like the Segway race idea more lmao

This remake surpasses my wildest dreams from those PS3 tech demo days. Holy shit

I've been quiet on this front because I haven't been digging in to much of the media (purely just been too busy) but holy shit, I'm watching the TGS presentation on YouTube and it's unbelievable. Piano rhythm game? Dialogue wheel? Chocobo catching? Card game? Mog House? Character focused side quests? *Actual* exploration? *Actual* world map? Kalm????

They are delivering

Raw footage of all the new content shown during the TGS livestream thanks to Famitsu:

I can't overstate how stoked I am that not only do you track Chocobos in the wild via tracks and have to sneak up and distract them to catch one, but that they essentially included Chocobo Hot & Cold from FFIX as an exploration mechanic and that it even extends into a way to do quest exploration is SO ridiculously cool!

Pretty sure that part will also still happen at the very beginning lol.
I never meant to imply that that encounter wouldn't happen, rather that it wasn't limited to JUST those the Green Dragon & random encounters.
