Ooh, nice to see everyone doing the theme. I just thought to change it to Rinoa myself until the playthrough was over. So to see all this, what on earth have I started? :monster:

To get Dragon Fangs go to the forest where you have the 2nd Laguna sequence and touch the mountain while run through the forest and you should encounter Grendels.

I can't believe how consistently effective that was. I had just been in that forest searching for Wendigos. It took a little while and I never saw a Grendel. But you're absolutely right, running right along the wall in the forest I ran into EXCLUSIVELY Grendels. Then just two Lvl Downs and they were dropping Dragon Fangs.

use the infinite Elnoyle area in Esthar for Energy Crystals and either play cards for the safe option for Malboro Tentacles OR do the difficult thing, equip your characters wth GF status defx4 abilities and equip 100 pains, confuse, Beserk and Zombie, that's what I normally do to prevent the worst from happening as soon as that Bad Breath hits, equip Initiative, Mug and then run :monster:

Everything on those Islands Closest to Heaven/Hell was wrecking my face, Malboros included. But my deck is in no condition to be winning any cards. So I put Quistis in the Yellow, and gave my party what status resistances I could - which was basically just Sleep and Berserk. Gave Quistis Initiative and hoped I could pull off her limit and banish the thing before anything happened. So, of course, when I ran into it, it wasn't giving me her limit break. Squall did happen to snap out of confusion relatively soon and I had fortunately given him the Treatment Command, so he went to work healing her and himself. Irvine got taken out, and so did Quistis and Squall was close. But after reviving her she finally got her limit break and I finally won. After which I thought, "Well, so much for this method." But the thing dropped 8 tentacles! Which was enough to get Doomtrain, and even extra for Quistis' Save the Queen. So, mission accomplished there, if not gracefully.

I did fight the Elnoyle a couple times yesterday...it's a bit slow for 2 Energy Crystals at a time though. While that's sufficient for the weapons that require them, it doesn't seem like a very efficient way to load up on Ultima. I think I'd rather just take out Ultima Weapon and get all the Ultimas I can that way. I know that doing so gets rid of the easy way to farm Curse Spikes...but I'm not gonna farm 100 of those multiple times anyway. Squall's sitting on ~50 Ultimas. I get 100 for killing ultima, and maybe I can cover some more with drawing from him.

You can always use the Ultima draw point at Shumi Village too. Then just run over to the chocobo forest, grab a chocobo, run around until you get paid twice and go back to the draw point. Takes no more than five minutes per draw that way. :monster:

Ok, I finally have some time to get this done! Pretty inaccurate though, as I'm going off of my really terrible memory...

Who was the third party member you took with you to Zell's room? What happened? Didn't get through to his room!

Where did you end up finding "the captain"? Were you surprised by this person's identity? Had a right run around before finally tracking him down where I knew he was hiding in the train. That sequence just annoys me, but loved the battle afterwards.

Did you get the GF Pandemona? Yes.

What sidequests have you been doing? Are you enjoying them? What rewards have you reaped? Not many. I've been getting stuff for everyone's ultimate weapons now and again, but that's pretty much it.

Have you checked out the School Festival Committe webpage/Selphie's diary through Squall's study panel? Nope.

Discover or see anything else you thought was interesting? In this chapter, no there was not much interesting going on.

Not a lot going on in the story this chapter, but what are your thoughts right now on what took place, what you anticipate is to come, and on the world setting (since you've had time to explore it further)? VIII is one of those games were I never thought that the player felt the pressure of events, compared to other games, specifically because of lot is withheld until the final chapters. One or two times things are kicked up a notch, but then it fades off for a long time. Whereas in other FF games, I felt that there is a steady rise to the treat and pressure that the characters are under.

I love that VIII presents the world first, and the story second, but the consequence of that is this missing feeling of urgency and pressure. And even then, there's still a heck of a lot about VIII's world that isn't fully explored.

7

Did you defeat the Galbadian Paratrooper on your first attempt? Did you enjoy this sequence? Oh how I detest this sequence. It's different and cool ... but the execution is rather annoying. It took me quite a few times to kick that damn Galbadian off! :D

Did you get the GF Cerberus? Yes. I love Cerberus' design by the way.

Did you get the GF Alexander?
Yes.

What kind of exchanges did your party members have with Seifer? Can't remember this part.

Was Ward in the dream sequence or was it just Kiros and Laguna? Just Kiros and Laguna.

Have you acquired any full stocks of high-level spells (e.g. Meteor, Flare, Ultima) yet? How have your junctions benefitted? Not at this stage, but they were pretty high amounts and my attack / HP were godly at this point.

Did you give (or sell) Girl Next Door to Zone or just keep it? Ah. I forgot I could give it to Zone ... so I just kept it.

What method did you use to defeat Abadon? Can't remember this section. I think I fire-junctioned or something.

Feelings on developments in the story? Memory is a bit fuzzy, so no, not at this point.

8

What are your impressions of Esthar? It's a pretty cool high-tech city, a little too futuristic for my tastes though. Of course the shopping district is godly and that is always my first port of call at the earliest opportunity, lol. Love it.

Did you get Doomtrain yet? Yes! Took me a while to be able to get all the parts, but got him, no probs.

Do you like using Edea? Such a refreshing change! Yes, I really enjoyed being able to control Edea.

Did you have any troubles with the "Gravity"-esque sequence? Nope! Went really smoothly this run.

Were you able to easily eliminate the Propagators or were you stumped for a while? Yes, was really easy.

We haven't checked in on your card collection in a couple of weeks. How is that going? Nowhere since I'm not playing the hideous thing, lol. :D

What are your thoughts on the story now? Were you surprised by a certain elected official's identity? The story begins to ramp up some more in this section from what I remember, which is really appreciated at this point. I love how Squall just desperately wants to hear Rinoa's voice again after pretty much ignoring his own feelings for so long. Sweet.

9

What sidequests did you complete? I just maxed out all the abilities available to the GFs and got everyone's ultimate weapons at this point.

Are you satisfied with your stats and junctions for going into the final stages of the game? VERY satisfied, lol. The final dungeon should be a breeze!

Did you get everyone's ultimate weapons? Just the main team - Squall, Rinoa and Irvine.

Is there anything you wish you'd had time for that you didn't get to do (or will save for later)? Not particularly.

Notice anything interesting as you explore the world one final time? I still get an obscene amount of joy from seeing Cactuar pop up from the small island, or the trains running around ... don't know why. I'm just a little weird like that, lol. Seriously though, little touches like that just makes the game world feel more real. Love things like that.

Chapter Nine: Killing Time

What sidequests did you complete?

I did a sizable chunk of the Shumi quest, but I wasn't able to get the next part to trigger. (Talking to the guy in Fisherman's Horizon) I'm not sure if I did talk to the right person in the village or what, but I didn't feel like going all the way back down there, lol.
I also finished the Deep Sea Research Center. Obviously I didn't do anything with cards, and it occurred to me the other day I haven't so much as seen a picture of a chocobo in this game...lol. I know they exist and apparently in forests like IX? Haven't done anything with those, if there even is a related sidequest that doesn't involve the pocketstation.

Are you satisfied with your stats and junctions for going into the final stages of the game?

I think so. As I said before, I'm not really loaded down with lots of all the best spells, but I still think I'm in decent shape. 100 Curagas on everyone's HP, 100 Auras on everyone's attack (except Squall who has 100 Ultimas), 100 Hastes on everyone's speed, Double on Accuracy save Squall as he doesn't need it.
Sleep, Dark, or Death on people's attack. And nearly every GF ability learned. So, while I didn't grind out a million Meteors, Full-Lifes, Flares, and Holys, I think my stats are all right. And I do have some of all those spells in case I really need them.
The only other thing I could potentially do is get Ultimas on everyone...as I said Squall has 100 (from Ultima Weapon), and Irvine has about 50, Rinoa doesn't have any. Grinding Elnoyle for it sounds tedious, and the Shumi draw point doesn't seem much better. But I might do it a couple times, rather than fully load everyone down, just enough to up Irvine's attack some, drop by the draw point one last time, and be on my way.

Did you get everyone's ultimate weapons?

Not everyone's, but everyone I wanted to. I have Squall's Lion Heart, Irvine's Exeter, and Quistis' Save the Queen. Those three and Rinoa are the only characters I've been using, and for her I got her second best weapon, the Cardinal, solely because it
Cardinal-ffviii-rinoa.png
:monster:

Is there anything you wish you'd had time for that you didn't get to do (or will save for later)?

I wished I had gotten my hands on an Accelerator or two to give everyone Auto-Haste. As it is only Rinoa has it, but that's the tradeoff for not doing cards :P

Notice anything interesting as you explore the world one final time?

As I said before, it's fun visiting places that were only in the Laguna flashbacks, because, for some reason, when I played the game originally I never considered that I' be able to go to those places. Besides Deling, of course. Also, learning what the moombas are surprised me, I had no idea.
And like Claymore said, I too like seeing the trains running all the time :) I wonder what the programming is on that. Do they just go back and forth on their line?

One other thing, am I doing something wrong or is the Ragnarok really slow (for an airship, it's way faster than the Garden of course)? It's one of the coolest, sleekest looking FF airships, why do the much more rudimentary-looking Highwind and Invincible go so much faster? Is VIII's map a lot bigger? Or is there another button I'm supposed to press? lol

What are your impressions of Esthar?
Awesome city and very fun to explore, quite possibly my favourite city in the game because there's a lot to do in it and it's easy to get lost, it's so bright and clean looking too, yet at the same time it feels so out of place compared to every other town and city in FFVIII because it's so futuristic, even the way the people dress is so different.

Did you get Doomtrain yet?
Similar to Force, I have the ring but haven't got Doomtrain just yet, I suppose I could have gone and got it as soon as I had control over Ragnarok, but I decided not to, I'll leave it for the sidequest chapter, I plan to do a lot in the chapter.

Do you like using Edea?
She's ok, also you never realise it until she's close to your characters but she's quite a short lady isn't she? She's got great magic potential in battle...being a sorceress and all but I'd rather keep my normal team members. Actually while Rinoa was down and out I stuck to a party of Squall, Irvine and Selphie and I took Selphie with me to the Lunar Base.

Did you have any troubles with the "Gravity"-esque sequence?[q/quote]
Nope but it's just very long and annoying, the best thing to do is center her to the screen but it's just playing the waiting game with it.

Were you able to easily eliminate the Propagators or were you stumped for a while?

Nah, once you know the sequence first time they're easy but the Propgators are some of the scariest monsters in this game, there's always that moment where I go OH SHIT!! when one of them starts chasing me.

We haven't checked in on your card collection in a couple of weeks. How is that going?

It's going quite well now, I've gotten quite a few more including Laguna and Seifer but that random rule is a fecking pain in the arse, getting Laguna did indeed take me quite a few retries and a lot of swearing was involved.

What are your thoughts on the story now?
Poor Rinoa, that girl just can't catch a break can she? I always wanted to know why the powers went to Rinoa and I wish it had been explored better. There has to be a reason Rinoa was chosen and I’m sure Ultimecia had some influence on who those powers went to considering she possessed Rinoa right from the off, it’s a pity it’s never fully explained. As much as I dislike her character and her behaviour, the scenes between her and Squall from space to this part of the playthrough are really lovely, Sorceress memorial is home to one of my favourite FMVs, I guess this is the part where I begin to take Rinoa more seriously and feel she matures as a character, it’s pretty brave of her after all to choose to seal herself away from the world, especially so soon after coming out of her coma and reuniting with Squall.

You know, I like Squall at this point too because although he loves Rinoa, you can tell he’s never really carried emotions like this before for anyone, I mean he drops everything to go and save her without telling everyone which is crazy and then does the crazy thing of going out into space after her knowing they could both die. The when he gets her back he willingly allows her to go get frozen and needs a royal kick up the arse from Quistis (god bless that woman) and company to realise what an idiot he’s being. It kind of shows that Squall is only human, he’s still new to being in love and it’ll take time for him to understand all these new feelings he has, it’s sort of nice he doesn’t become one dimensional.

The sad thing is all the other characters once you hit disc 3 all take a backseat in favour of the love story which doesn’t sit well with me. There should have been more of a focus on the friendship between the orphans and their relationship with Edea now that they’re all back together but it becomes a let’s go save Rinoa mission. There’s not nearly as much dialogue as there should be for these 5 people and their matron after finding out such a big thing towards the end of disc 2, it would have been much better to have more scenes with them as a group in Esthar and on the way to there instead of these disjointed bits here and there.

Were you surprised by a certain elected official's identity?

I really wasn’t surprised about our elected leader, it’s really quite spoiled by Kiros and Ward being mentioned, so when the party is getting ready to go there you know who you’re going to meet, I would have loved it on that first initial playthrough if you could have one of those moments where you could just go OMG REALLY!!!???. Also I do like his choice of clothes, let’s face it Kiros and Ward look completely ridiculous in that Esthar crap.

Onto the sidequest stuff and I have a nice lot of quests to complete :)

Did you junction any Fire spells to your attack in the MD level, like Squall talked about?
I don't normally, but did for this playthrough. Used it as a precaution and it got me through this particular part a lot quicker than I usually would.

Did you get the GF Leviathan?
Yep.

Did you meet the Master Fisherman and perform his errand? Listen to his story?
First of all, can I just say how hilarious his introductory scene is? Got his BIG ONE, eh? ;)

Alas, no. I actually forgot whilst I was doing the chapter. Oh well!

Were you surprised by what we learned about a certain member of Garden's staff?
You mean about Cid and NORG, right? Well, I was originally. The NORG thing was a nice twist. What's an even better twist is Edea being MARRIED to Cid. MIND FUCK.

Were you surprised by what happened after the boss fight in FH?
For the sake of the playthrough, I honestly was. But when I originally played, I had an inkling they'd be fine because they were still showing in the party menu.

Have you already acquired the materials needed to make the Lion
Heart?
Have I fuck.

Did you reunite the Cafateria Lady with her son?
Yes. I never knew you could do this, so it was lovely to do it this time around.

How did the concert go?
Pretty well. I chose Zell for Bass Guitar, Irvine with Sax, Selphie with Electric Guitar and Quistis for Piano. It was a nice slow melody. Anyone like how Rinoa just pushes Squall off the spot?

Their talk was pretty intense, too. Squall's realising it's easier to appease Rinoa instead of arguing with her. But even so, that end result wasn't pretty either.

How's that card collection coming?
Coming along great now. I defeated the majority of the CC Club and acquired a few rare cards. I'd list them all, but do you really want to see them all?

Thoughts on the story?
Seeing Squall question everything is a brilliant progression in the story i.e. the true meaning of SeeD and thinking for himself for once. The whole Ellone thing is a big surprise too, as well as the Garden actually turning out to be an ancient ship and the revelations coming from NORG.

The scene between Squall and Ellone though, is hugely powerful. We really get into his mind, despite it being slightly confusing and I like that. It's like he's turning into a child again asking questions, but still his teenage self not wanting to rely on anyone. Kid!Squall is just so heartbreaking to watch.

He was abandoned when he was a kid and you start to see where his trust/reliance issues come into place.

Who was the third party member you took with you to Zell's room? What happened?
Rinoa. Her and Zell are my favourite pairing with Squall in the party.

Where did you end up finding "the captain"? Were you surprised by this person's identity?
I found him at the train after doing some digging around. I was surprised and found it hilarious. The fact that Raijin can be called a captain is a joke, right?

Did you get the GF Pandemona?
Yep, from Fujin.

What sidequests have you been doing? Are you enjoying them? What rewards have you reaped?
I've done the Shumi Village and Odin ones so far. With Odin, I literally had a minute and a half left on the clock, so that wasn't FUN as you'd think. As for Shumi - fun, really? Are you brain dead?

Have you checked out the School Festival Committe webpage/Selphie's diary through Squall's study panel?
I did! I like hearing Selphie's thoughts and those of everyone else who are writing in the diary (Irvine, Quistis and Zell so far). Makes the game a bit more personal, otherwise we wouldn't really get to know them more as characters outside the plot.

Discover or see anything else you thought was interesting?
Not particularly, but there's an area in the Trabia continent where the gauge of the Garden is going craycray.

Not a lot going on in the story this chapter, but what are your thoughts right now on what took place, what you anticipate is to come, and on the world setting (since you've had time to explore it further)?
Well, the fact that Irvine knowingly grew up with the gang (except Rinoa) is always going to be a huge mindfuck because he never mentioned it before. Of course, the whole GF thing comes to mind, but I can't help feeling putting that in there cheapens how they can't remember their childhood. Nevertheless, it's a brilliant twist and just brings the group even closer together. It even loosens Squall up a bit, who actually remembers and has been remembering stuff about being alone as a kid.

I like that you can see some of the world so far in the Garden and yet not see the entirety i.e. Esthar. You just know you'll get there eventually, but not exactly sure WHEN since the battle with the Sorceress is more important.

Did you defeat the Galbadian Paratrooper on your first attempt? Did you enjoy this sequence?
It took three attempts. No, I didn't enjoy it. I only did whenI kicked that sorry soldier's arse.

Did you get the GF Cerberus?
Done and dusted.

Did you get the GF Alexander?
See above.

What kind of exchanges did your party members have with Seifer?
Seifer: "Rinoa, what are you doing here? You're gonna fight me, too? Come on, remember a year ago we ..."
Rinoa: "Stop it!"

Seifer: "Hey, you're a Galbadian student. Get over here."
Irvine: "I'm happy right here, thank you."

Can I just say these are my two favourite responses of them all? :monster:

Was Ward in the dream sequence or was it just Kiros and Laguna?
Just Laguna and Kiros.

Have you acquired any full stocks of high-level spells (e.g. Meteor, Flare, Ultima) yet? How have your junctions benefitted?
Ultima and all the Aga's. I suppose they have.

Did you give (or sell) Girl Next Door to Zone or just keep it?
I gave it to him and he gave me the Shiva Card and Rename Card.

What method did you use to defeat Abadon?
Curaga over and over again. Might have used it about 5-6 times?

Feelings on developments in the story?
Oh God, Rinoa's hitting on Squall harder than ever. And aww, bless Squall. It's so obvious everyone's trying to get them together and even HE notices it of all people.

The attack on Galbadia Garden is far by one of my favourite parts of the story, so I had lots of fun and nostalgia.

Seifer's obviously lost his mind at this point, but his drive is fierce. He truly believes he's doing good turning on his former fellow students? It's a shame, but some characters can be so short-sighted. Also in the first fight with him, he turns around and says he can't be beaten. But when Irvine shoots him the next turn, he uses a Hi-Potion. Irony at its best! And he also doesn't hurt Rinoa once in the fight. Did this happen for anyone else?

In between fighting Seifer and Edea, I came across one of those poisonous monsters in there (can't remember what it's called and cba looking it up). It used Gas on the party and Rinoa got confused. First, she hits Irvine (clever girl!) and then inflicts Blizzaga on herself, which heals her (even better!).

The scene when Edea makes her entrance and delivers her speech is so intense. It gives me shivers each time and it's probably because of the chanting. I love how she calls Seifer a "worthless fool" and he still stands by her. Boy, that guy can't learn to say no, can he? Also the instrumental playing in the battle - LOVE, LOVE LOVE.

But Seifer, darling, we already beat you once. We got past you once. Edea was just a sly bitch and phased through the floor. You're only here because you're her pet. It's not just his HP that's down, it's from Firaga to Fira. Tut tut. And he hurt Rinoa. Wow, he's pissed ...

It's a weird scene when Rinoa loses consciousness. Pretty sure that was her thought when she said about her body. And Seifer just walks away. It all makes sense in the next disc. I love how Quistis is the first to run to her, pretty sure she has some hidden lesbian feelings for her. :monster:

Also, this is pretty much for it for Rinoa for a bit. I don't like this part at all. :(

I loved the scene when Edea's back to herself. She's just so unaware of what's happened initially and is overjoyed to see everyone all grown up. And yes, there goes Quistis again with the hidden lesbian feelings, concealed with her open concern.

Whilst Edea's explaining time compression, I just love Squall's thoughts. Now Rinoa's out of the picture for a while, you really start to see he's falling in love with her. It's took him sometime, but then he's an arrogant idiot.

I feel so bad for Squall when he's alone with Rinoa. My heart breaks for him. :(

Now for the Laguna sequence, it's hilarious. I love it. It's my favourite one.

In regards to the whole Ellone thing, it's certainly a development. It's so out of character for her (well, as far as we know) to just jump on an Esthar ship.

I like Squall holding Rinoa. It's cute. I like how he realises he's changed so much lately just thinking about saving her and everything else that's happened. The scene where he's talking to her on the bridge is brilliant. It really showcases how he truly feels about the world and everything in it.

"That's a secret between you and me. Got it?" Love that line.

And I love how the gang is there at the end of the line before him, hahaha.

Also going back to Quistis and the lesbian feelings, I'm pretty sure of it now. I'm thinking back on every interaction the two have shared. I don't think I'll ship Quinoa because it's one-sided, though.

Irvine and Selphie "going to check out the area" ... pretty sure that's not the only area, right? ;)

So, Esthar next chapter. Looking forward to that one!

What are your impressions of Esthar?
It's like the TARDIS - bigger on the inside! I kid. But it's an impressive city. It's the one city that I love from the game, but forget about the most just because of how grand it is.

Did you get Doomtrain yet?
Working on it.

Do you like using Edea?
I've opted out of using her for this playthrough, just to see what it's like. So generally, I do like using her.

Did you have any troubles with the "Gravity"-esque sequence?
No.

Were you able to easily eliminate the Propagators or were you stumped for a while?
No, got rid of them easily. The thing about pairs and colours came back to me pretty quickly.

We haven't checked in on your card collection in a couple of weeks. How is that going?
It's more or less the same, with Shiva and a few more additions. Still aiming to catch 'em all. ;)

What are your thoughts on the story now? Were you surprised by a certain elected official's identity?
I like that the past and present are now moving towards the same place, things are starting to click. And aww, Angelo at Lunatic Gate. That was so cute.

Jesus, that Rinoa scene is so eerie. It's nice to see her walking about finally, but ... not like this. :(

The Lunar Cry is certainly an amazing scene and it reminds me of Meteor from FFVII, but better.

Wow, the scene where Rinoa accepts she's going to die is heartbreaking. It's so ad to see her drifting endlessly and Squall shouting out to her, hoping he can save her through his voice. Even seeing her struggling to breathe in the suit is upsetting. But alas, the bangles! Aww.

(She's my favourite female of the series.) :monster:

I also squee'd when my OTP was reunited. Also, thank God for the Ragnarok, eh?

I find the moments Squall and Rinoa spend together in the pilot's seat so bittersweet. Eyes On Me is absolutely perfect in that scene, emulating the love Laguna and Julia had for one another through them (well, people who've played will know what I'm going on about!).

I mean, even her being taken away is heartbreaking, too. You have to love that the group encourages Squall to get her back, despite her now being a sorceress. Seeing that clip of them being reunited and hugging never seems to get old.

Also, this official ... haha, it was always obvious after the last Laguna sequence where he was headed. I think it was weird the way he was with Squall (again, you know what I'm talking about), but Kiros and Ward knew exactly WHO he was (Ward telling Kiros telling Squall it's a good job he looks like his mother and not his father).

The stage is set, can't wait to get the show on the road now! I mean, the explanation of time compression always baffles me. I just go with it. :monster:

Did you run into any trouble in Lunatic Pandora?

Nope. Considering how much MORE grinding I could have done, I was surprised just how well I steamrolled the bosses here. Grinding once again proves overrated. I was happy with what I achieved, mind you, but there's rarely a reason to kill yourself over it unless you're playing Shin Megami Tensei.

Anything familiar about the place stand out to you? Did you find anything nice?

More than the first time we were in there? Was there supposed to be? I mean I saw all the Laguna bits the first time around and collected the spoils from the things I did then. Especially nice was the Power Generator that gave me more than enough Pulse Ammo for Lion Heart.

Did you bother to go find the Ragnarok in the Time Compressed World? Play any more cards?

Haha, that's funny.
Oh, but speaking of the Ragnarok - bitchin' scene, breaking into the Lunatic Pandora. Made me want a lot more of Ragnarok in that game.

What do you think of the game's final dungeon?

Honestly, kinda lackluster. I get the mystique and the atmosphere they were going for, and I can appreciate the return of some puzzles to a final dungeon, but I was underwhelmed. And for such a stellar soundtrack, it's not much of a final dungeon theme.
I was reminded of my Final Dungeon review, which, while I was probably overly harsh on VIII, sandwiched between Northern Cave and Memoria sets a high bar.
The ending sequence (before and after) with the Time Compression is very cool and well done though. Oh, and I love battling all those Sorceresses...but I wish I used more models. I understand that that would have created a lot of extra work for a very brief appearance, but even if they had just designed a bunch of modular parts they could have stuck together in different combinations, it would have gone a long way. Especially considering, I read on the wiki, they all specialize on an element.

Did you unseal all your abilities? If not, which ones did you not get to? Which did you unseal first? Why?

Yes, and Magic, because Meltdown+Aura is ridiculous.

Were there any GFs you missed that you had to acquire from bosses in Ultimecia's Castle?

No sir.

Did you take a shot at Omega Weapon? How did that go?

Ahhhh, no.

What do you think of the final boss battles?

Pretty cool, if a bit lengthy. The designs, as always, are top notch. Ultimecia's final form, in particular, looks very cool, and creepy. With that tied up...duplicate or something making up her bottom half.
The picking a random party thing is some grade-A bullshit though. While I didn't fare too badly (I got Irvine, Rinoa, and Quistis, the first two of which were part of my main team), and since I remembered that that happened I gave my other three party members one GF each so that they could at least have an item command and be on Megalixir duty, it's still dumb. I did all that work to make Lion Heart, only for Squall to not even be in the last battle? Still, Irvine might deal damage even better than Squall, and Rinoa was fun from a role play perspective.
Even though I, historically don't like any ability that makes you lose control of a character, in the interest of role playing, I put Rinoa into Sorceress mode. (Sorceress Battle!!!) And, she actually did pretty darn well for at least half the battle. Lots of -agas and Flares, all at bonus power and all with legit, non-Drawn magic. Pretty cool. But for the latter two battles she insisted on casting the shit out of Dispel and Slow. Still. Worth it.

What were your feelings about the ending? How would you compare it to other FF endings?

Well it's a time travel story, so you HAVE to have a little time loop paradox in there, right? :) I like it though, 'tis a good one.
It's very atmospheric, and the graphics are actually pretty good, with Rinoa's hand in his hair and everything (you can tell that mocap was in it's infancy though). You know I don't care for Eyes On Me, but in watching the ending I didn't quite notice it. I like seeing the transition between old and young Laguna. I don't know why Seifer continues to...be. And I like Selphie's video tape at the end.
It's kind of a different ending from other FFs. It's almost like X with a happy ending.

Finally, what are your overall feelings about your experience with FFVIII in this Community Playthrough?

I'm really glad we did this one and that I participated. I've always been down on VIII and I wanted to experience it with you guys, particularly those who really enjoy it. And the things that have always bugged me about it do persist... drawing is boring, the best way around it is the card game, which is fun on its own but the overall system is tiresome, but most of all, the weak cast. Like I said, Selphie's little video recording at the end is fun and amusing, but I just never cared about the cast. And once the love story picks up the rest of the cast almost entirely vanishes. I've been through this before though in my other summaries.
ANYWAY, so while VIII might not be climbing my ranking of favorite FFs, I absolutely have gained a new appreciation for it and I finally found some hints of what enthrall its fans. I wish it built it's world more because what you get towards the end is pretty fascinating. Esthar's technological dominance, the Lunar Cry (does that supply all the worlds monsters or are there specific Lunar monsters?), the eponymous "Succession of Witches" (freakin adore that song, by the by). How does that work, clearly there's not only one at a time. How many are there? How many are good, evil, or indifferent? What does Edea taking Ultimecia's powers mean when she's already a sorceress? And what does it mean that Rinoa inherited - presumably - both. Pretty intriguing stuff.

Anyway, thanks everyone, and thanks Tres for running it. I hope everyone that started can finish :)

I'm very glad to see you finish, and congrats on being the first of us to do so. Warms my heart to finally see you saying something nice about VIII. May be hope for this relationship yet. :awesome:

By the way, I'm not sure if you knew this, but if you don't get the party you want in the final battle, if you let unwanted party members die, after a few turns, a message stating "Absorbed into time..." will appear, and one of the remaining party members will take their place. :monster:

To answer your questions:
-There are monsters native to the moon, and the Lunar Cry is not quite responsible for all monsters on the planet below; some are just animals; some are animals or even plants mutated by the energy given off by the Lunar Cry
-Until the events of the game, there was more than one sorceress at a time; by game's end, Rinoa is the only one left; her successors (the witches fought as you enter the Time Compressed World) will each be the only ones of their generation as well; Ultimecia will be the last, as her powers end up in the past
-When someone who is already a sorceress receives more powers, some are inevitably lost in the transfer, though there is typically a net gain; however, this is still tempered by the inheritor's natural affinity for magic; this is why Ulty is already more powerful than Rinoa even before Time Compression, despite the two having the same powers; all this also explains why Edea doesn't become more powerful despite receiving Ulty's powers over and over as the time loop repeats itself -- a certain amount of power is always lost in the transfer, and Edea has a fixed natural affinity anyway

Congratulations ForceStealer!~

Thanks for all the information Tres :)

Trying to fight Bahamut underlevelled and underprepared is :wacky: Closest I got was an attempt where two of my characters kept dying leaving Rinoa to solo and eventually getting heal locked into Bahamut spamming Mega Flares, and Stops, me spamming X Potions, frantically trying to refresh Shell when it wore off, then eventually Bahamut getting lucky with his Stop timing w/th Stop + physical attack combo finishing Rinoa off before I got to heal. This max ATB speed is a thing.

Red Dragon before no slouch either. Breath spam :wacky:

What sidequests did you complete
I completed Obel Lake for the first time, it’s a bit annoying having to run back and forth everywhere during it looking for all the stones and stuff but I completed it for the first time, I feels it's one of those more bizarre sidequests, it and Pupu.

Shumi Sidequest fully completed, Laguna statue is pretty awesome when completed also I love Squall's reaction to the Shumi leader showing his hand to him.

So far I’ve got Bahamut from the research centre but I haven’t gone any further just yet to go beat Ultima Weapon, still doing some stat levelling for all my characters and I think taking Zell along for this bit helps. I think I’m going to refine my Gilgamesh card for some holy wars to help me out, I also grabbed Cactuar and I have doomtrain, still yet to get Tonberry but that’s because I’m not getting Odin until disc 4 so I’ll get the two of them together. The reason I don’t want to get Odin yet is only because I prefer him and the success rate of Zantesuken than I do Gilgamesh although I’ve heard Gilgamesh’s rate of popping up is more than Odin’s.

Pupu done and dusted. Awwwww that little blue bugger is so cute I gave him the Elixirs, who would seriously kill that adorable little thing rather than help him, plus the reward is better if you save him. I’ll never forget the first time I encountered Pupu’s ship I had no idea what it meant or what it was supposed to be all about but I encountered it a few more times and then by the time I came across Pupu I didn’t have enough Elixirs to heal him, I think I had 4 Elixirs and I don’t think you can escape the battle so I had to kill him and felt very awful doing it.

Are you satisfied with your stats and junctions for going into the final stages of the game

I’m very satisified with my stats for my 3 main party members Squall, Irvine and Rinoa, there’s an even spreading of GFs and their stat abilities, but I’ve still some work to do with Quisitis, Zell and Selphie, so I’m concentrating on building their stats a lot more before I continue on, Zell is my weakest party member this playthrough, he’s usually one of my strongest but I seem to have neglected him this time around.

Did you get everyone’s Ultimate Weapons?
I finally got Quistis and Irvine’s Ultimate weapons, I believe I mentioned it before but I’d stopped playing cards because the Elnoyle rate was becoming very slim and I got fed up trying to play to get Energy Crystals, a few trips to the unlimited Elnoyle spot after the Lunar Cry with a few, Meltdown+Renzokuken/AP Shot limits combo and the thing goes down oh so quickly, oh and it’s pretty susceptible to Death, that works quite nicely too, I also equipped the Rare Item Ability to help push the rate up of it dropping Energy Crystals :D

Irvine I had all the materials except a moonstone so that was dealt with very quickly as soon the Lunar Cry happened.

Is there anything you wish you'd had time for that you didn't get to do (or will save for later)?
Not so much that I don’t have time just holding off on them until disc 4. I mentioned it before but I’m saving the Odin Sidequest, getting Tonberry and defeating Ultima Weapon until disc 4.

I think the one sidequests I guess I wish I had completed it the one with Zell and the Pigtail girl, it's nice that Zell has someone :)

Notice anything interesting as you explore the world one final time?
I guess I love how detailed the Info section is by the time you’re ready to go to the final section and how you wouldn’t know about it if you didn’t take the time to look at it, there’s no major hints in FF8 about what the Info section does or is there for unless you choose to go in there but it has some really nice information about places and people in the FF8 world. There are only short paragraphs but you can piece together a lot of stuff from it in terms of things not fully being explained from the game if you take the time to look at it.

One more chapter to go, I’ll try and have this completed by the end of the week.

Did you run into any trouble in Lunatic Pandora?
Nope nothing out of the ordinary. Seifer’s appearance has certainly got a bit rugged hasn’t it, I actually feel sorry for him because he seems to have completely lost sight of himself and even his dream. Fujin sums it up really well actually about how Seifer is so different now, it’s like he doesn’t know who he is anymore.
Anything familiar about the place stand out to you? Did you find anything nice?
Hmmm I did indeed get some very nice little items, (Hello Power generator) there’s some areas of familiarity in this place BUT if you’ve been through it before with Zell, it’s quite easy to find your way around.
Did you bother to go find the Ragnarok in the Time Compressed World? Play any more cards?
I did find Ragnarok, I still had the Odin, Tonberry and Deep Sea research centre sidequests to complete, so getting Ragnarok was paramount to that, but I didn’t play any more Cards, think I’ve done more than enough of that now.
I love the Sorceress battles, I just love how the backgrounds change with them and it’s all distorted and really gives you the sense of the group moving through time, I think it also gives the sense of how many different sorceress there are and how they’ve fallen from grace essentially.
There’s something quite sad about seeing the SeeD members lying dead just outside the castle, you wonder at this point just how powerful is this enemy if she can wipe out future SeeDs.
What do you think of the game's final dungeon?
I like the interior and the puzzles to get through it but I very much dislike the music, it suits the gothic, refined interior but it doesn’t get you all pumped up for the final battle like most other FF final dungeon music does, I usually end up turning the sound off altogether it gets on my nerves. I wish they’d used Compression of Time instead, it’s really haunting and beautiful and I think it fits in much better with the final area.
Did you unseal all your abilities? If not, which ones did you not get to? Which did you unseal first? Why?
I unsealed all my abilities and the first one was Magic, because a lot of the bosses have an elemental weakness so if you have a nice high magic stat and throw a few triples on the party and you can do a lot of damage quite easily.

Were there any GFs you missed that you had to acquire from bosses in Ultimecia's Castle?
I normally draw Eden from Tiamat but I actually managed to beat for the first time Ultima Weapon, I’ve never done it before. It did take a couple of restarts though as he did kill me a couple of times before I managed to get rid of him, it was about the timing of my attacks against his mostly.
Did you take a shot at Omega Weapon? How did that go?
I’ve actually beaten Omega before I feels it’s all about the timing again, because his attack pattern is set, the combination I usually go for is to use Initiative and cast Triple first of all, Have 1 character with the Item ability for Megalixirs and Holy Wars, Triple cast Aura and then immediately use a Holy War after, it usually gives me a headstart and a couple of rounds of Limits. There’s also something incredibly satisfying about beating Omega.

What do you think of the final boss battles?
I really like the sequences of final bosses, they’re really simple to beat though if you have LionHeart with Squall, as up until the final form of Ultimecia, You can normally wipe out the first 3 battles with a Renzokuken+Lionheart combo.
To this day I still like that so far Ultimecia is the only true FF female final boss (Cloud of Darkness doesn’t count as it chooses to take female form rather than actually being female), I think we need more female, final boss characters in the series, like
What were your feelings about the ending? How would you compare it to other FF endings?
First of all I love how it all loops back to Squall meeting Edea and her realising who he is, it bugs me though that Squall only seems to really value his other friends apart form Rinoa at this minute, he should have realised that the moment he found out they had been together once upon a time. The FMV sequence with Squall alone if a bit scary and there’s this moment where you’re left wondering what has actually happened to him?
It’s really nice to see what everyone else is up to in the ending, Laguna visiting Raine’s grave, Seifer reuiniting with Rajin and Fujin and then the party where you see the whole group back together again.
Favourite bit is Selphie filming everyone though, I remember getting really excited the first time I saw that bit because it was so unexpected, I assumed there’s just be the credits and that was it.
Finally, what are your overall feelings about your experience with FFVIII in this Community Playthrough?
Overall I really enjoyed doing this, I’ve been wanting an FFVIII playthrough for quite some time but I guess I’m a bit more disappointed that not as many people got involved and we couldn’t all get around to doing the chapters at the same time, I know I’m guilty of being one of those people as I fell behind a few times too and I did the same in our previous FF playthroughs but it’s a bit sad I guess that we’re all up for it in the beginning and then the numbers start dwindling further to the end. I think a few more skype or IRC chats would have been lovely too.
Tres, your chapters, had some nice questions in there for us to consider and I think you’ve handled the running of the playthrough very well so thanks for doing a great job with this.

All in all I’ve enjoyed myself and it’s been great chatting to everyone during the playthrough about the game, I hope we do another playthrough in the future and look forward to it :)

I finished this!

Not sure if I'm quite done with the file yet, but at least I finished this.

(managed to unseal everything except items and command abilities)

I also need to finish. The file on my Vita is somewhere ridiculous like pre-battle of the gardens. And battle of the gardens is one of my favourite sequences in the whole game.

One of my favorite sequences in any game. And, yeah, I'm still before that too -- I was working on getting my levels maxed out last time I played.

I'm just going through side quests until I take the plunge into facing Seifer, Adel and the future. Played too much previously and had to take a loooong break. I'll try see if I can finish it sometime this week/end.

I'm sorry I missed out on this, but it clearly been a big success. :D

Any chance of a community play-through of FFX when the HD version is released?
The release is around the 21st of March, I think quite a few of us will be playing it anyway...

^ I'm pretty much hoping it'll be the next playthrough. Sure a lot of people will get involved and it can be an even bigger success.
