Chapter Ten: 'Til the End of the World
Target:
To be completed: Whenever you get around to it
Did you run into any trouble in Lunatic Pandora?
Nope. Considering how much MORE grinding I could have done, I was surprised just how well I steamrolled the bosses here. Grinding once again proves overrated. I was happy with what I achieved, mind you, but there's rarely a reason to kill yourself over it unless you're playing Shin Megami Tensei.
Anything familiar about the place stand out to you? Did you find anything nice?
More than the first time we were in there? Was there supposed to be? I mean I saw all the Laguna bits the first time around and collected the spoils from the things I did then. Especially nice was the Power Generator that gave me more than enough Pulse Ammo for Lion Heart.
Did you bother to go find the Ragnarok in the Time Compressed World? Play any more cards?
Haha, that's funny.
Oh, but speaking of the Ragnarok -
bitchin' scene, breaking into the Lunatic Pandora. Made me want a lot more of Ragnarok in that game.
What do you think of the game's final dungeon?
Honestly, kinda lackluster. I get the mystique and the atmosphere they were going for, and I can appreciate the return of some puzzles to a final dungeon, but I was underwhelmed. And for such a stellar soundtrack, it's not much of a final dungeon theme.
I was reminded of my Final Dungeon review, which, while I was probably overly harsh on VIII, sandwiched between Northern Cave and Memoria sets a high bar.
The ending sequence (before and after) with the Time Compression is very cool and well done though. Oh, and I love battling all those Sorceresses...but I wish I used more models. I understand that that would have created a lot of extra work for a very brief appearance, but even if they had just designed a bunch of modular parts they could have stuck together in different combinations, it would have gone a long way. Especially considering, I read on the wiki, they all specialize on an element.
Did you unseal all your abilities? If not, which ones did you not get to? Which did you unseal first? Why?
Yes, and Magic, because Meltdown+Aura is ridiculous.
Were there any GFs you missed that you had to acquire from bosses in Ultimecia's Castle?
No sir.
Did you take a shot at Omega Weapon? How did that go?
Ahhhh, no.
What do you think of the final boss battles?
Pretty cool, if a bit lengthy. The designs, as always, are top notch. Ultimecia's final form, in particular, looks very cool, and creepy. With that tied up...duplicate or something making up her bottom half.
The picking a random party thing is some grade-A bullshit though. While I didn't fare too badly (I got Irvine, Rinoa, and Quistis, the first two of which were part of my main team), and since I remembered that that happened I gave my other three party members one GF each so that they could at least have an item command and be on Megalixir duty, it's still dumb. I did all that work to make Lion Heart, only for Squall to not even be in the last battle? Still, Irvine might deal damage even better than Squall, and Rinoa was fun from a role play perspective.
Even though I, historically don't like any ability that makes you lose control of a character, in the interest of role playing, I put Rinoa into Sorceress mode. (Sorceress Battle!!!) And, she actually did pretty darn well for at least half the battle. Lots of -agas and Flares, all at bonus power and all with legit, non-Drawn magic. Pretty cool. But for the latter two battles she insisted on casting the shit out of Dispel and Slow. Still. Worth it.
What were your feelings about the ending? How would you compare it to other FF endings?
Well it's a time travel story, so you HAVE to have a little time loop paradox in there, right?
I like it though, 'tis a good one.
It's very atmospheric, and the graphics are actually pretty good, with Rinoa's hand in his hair and everything (you can tell that mocap was in it's infancy though). You know I don't care for Eyes On Me, but in watching the ending I didn't quite notice it. I like seeing the transition between old and young Laguna. I don't know why Seifer continues to...be. And I like Selphie's video tape at the end.
It's kind of a different ending from other FFs. It's almost like X with a happy ending.
Finally, what are your overall feelings about your experience with FFVIII in this Community Playthrough?
I'm really glad we did this one and that I participated. I've always been down on VIII and I wanted to experience it with you guys, particularly those who really enjoy it. And the things that have always bugged me about it do persist... drawing is boring, the best way around it is the card game, which is fun on its own but the overall system is tiresome, but most of all, the weak cast. Like I said, Selphie's little video recording at the end is fun and amusing, but I just never cared about the cast. And once the love story picks up the rest of the cast almost entirely vanishes. I've been through this before though in my other summaries.
ANYWAY, so while VIII might not be climbing my ranking of favorite FFs, I absolutely have gained a new appreciation for it and I finally found some hints of what enthrall its fans. I wish it built it's world more because what you get towards the end is pretty fascinating. Esthar's technological dominance, the Lunar Cry (does that supply all the worlds monsters or are there specific Lunar monsters?), the eponymous "Succession of Witches" (freakin adore that song, by the by). How does that work, clearly there's not only one at a time. How many are there? How many are good, evil, or indifferent? What does Edea taking Ultimecia's powers mean when she's already a sorceress? And what does it mean that Rinoa inherited - presumably - both. Pretty intriguing stuff.
Anyway, thanks everyone, and thanks Tres for running it. I hope everyone that started can finish
