Final Fantasy IX Coming to PC/iOS!!!!!!!!

Welp there go many hours of my life. The port footage shown in the trailer looks really good, I'm actually so stoked for this.

Guys this is absolutely massive news. It's massive news because it was actually so unlikely to happen - IX was the only PS era FF that didn't get a PC release.

I really really hope the PC port matches the fidelity from the link I posted in the other thread. SE should really deliver on that because the game looks absolutely beautiful prior to being downscaled to run on PS1.

I mean if that's what you're hoping for, expect to be disappointed. They'll filter the backgrounds like they did with VII and VIII, and they'll look better than the originals but there's just no way they'll use those backgrounds (I had a read through that GAF thread btw, holy shit those are beautiful).

I mean it's the dream that they'd do something like that and I wish they would, but you can already see in the trailer that it's the original backgrounds with a filter applied.

For the record the trailer appears to be widescreen but I'd expect that's just for the trailer, famitsu screens are pillarboxed 4:3.

I suppose you are right. I was just being hopeful that they had the original upscaled versions at SE and were gonna roll with that. Top tier optimism lol


That said though as pointed out on gaf even just emulated FF9 can look pretty nice. If it gets decent modders in the scene there could be some really nice texture and hd model mods coming for this in the future

I'm willing to bet background replacement is something that can happen, especially since a bunch of the backgrounds have been found by said person in GAF thrad.

One thing to note though is that FFIX doesn't have the same data structure as VII and VIII, so I'm curious about how they're handling this port. You can already see from stills that they've used entirely new/ HD fonts (obviously) but more importantly the character models aren't the originals and neither are their avatars in the menu!

I'm worried the PC port is going to be a straight port of the mobile version, really hoping that's not the case.

Neat. It looks just like when I first played it, i.e. on an emulator with high resolution shit .

There's a decent chance it's the same as the mobile versions though; I can imagine Square's perfected their porting wossname so they have one product / game which they can build for multiple platforms.

Come to think of it, why didn't the original release of FFIX have that option? "Chrono Cross" did, and it came out the year before.

Because there's just no way the PS could have handled IX with a speedup. Mine died just trying to run normal IX and only started actually working again when I ran it on the "PSOne" model a while later. Bear in mind this was the PAL version which ran at 5/6th's the speed of yours.

The blackscreen after hitting battles was a problem =solved with the speedup. The fact that characters take 6 years to execute attacks after you command them to = a symptom of having 4 chars in battle on ps era.

If I had to guess, it's the FMV's causing it to be so large.

There is in this era of FF games. I mean as long as it's well implemented I don't have a problem with it (as in, as long as the autosave doesn't occupy any of the manual slots like it does in some modern games, because that would be very problematic).
