lol I knew about Cait Sith but I never realized there were Scottish things in IX as well!

And isn't Cait Sitth based on an actual Scottish myth?

Yeah, a cat sith or cat sidhe(ket shee) is a cat-like demon from Scottish mythology. I remember reading its supposed to be based on some kind of hybrid cat indigenous to Scotland but I can't remember.

As for Conde Petie...dwarves always seem to speak Scottish, lol.

Cait Sith's accent is pretty great to me. In the Japanese version, he speaks kansai-ben, which is basically a strange, rural Japanese dialect that you could basically equate with hicks and bumpkins, so it's usually translated in English with some sort of Southern accent. But, considering the Gaelic origins of Cait Sith, they gave him an accent that suited his character.

Final Fantasy, and fantasy in general, does draw a lot from Scotland, or rather, from Celtic/Gaelic mythology and traditions in general. Even way back when, FFIV got its "Celtic Moon" soundtrack with traditional Celtic folk instruments.

Of course, that's not to say that it doesn't also draw from many, many other cultures and religions.

Which dialect of Kansai-ben? I know Gin from Bleach speaks specifically with a Kyoto-ben, and this makes him sound weirdly polite and very creepy. Osaka speaks Osaka-ben (no duh) and so she has a Houstin based accent. :awesomonster:

While we're on the subject: Did Rosso have a Kansai accent? I've heard some people use this to explain her daft Transylvanian one in the English vers.
