I've finished chapter 4 now! Very enjoyable chapter and it was nice and long, I had a lot of fun with it. :D

Discussion: I had a lot of trouble with this part of the game as a kid - it's where I stopped playing, in fact, because I couldn't beat the first boss of the chapter. What was your strategy? Did you manage to get everything from the castle? There's another hidden summon in this chapter (no pun intended) - did you find it? How much blue magic have you managed to learn, if any? Are you spreading it around your four characters or do you have a specialist blue mage?

Okay, so first, the fire ship! Interesting little dungeon, I actually enjoyed it and the puzzles in it. Some nice treasure too. The Liquid Fire boss was a bit tough, I think he KO'd someone at one point :awesome: But I got rid of him within a few minutes by using Blizzara, as I made Galuf a Red Mage. Worked like a charm. If only all bosses had easily distinguishable weak points :monster:

I was right, I see, at how the fire crystal was still destroyed in the end. Off course. :awesome: But the werewolf sacrificed himself. Aww. Interesting to see werewolves as a race in this game; I'm curious to learn more about them. They seem to have a tie with Galuf so also waiting to see how that plays out.

And then I'm suddenly thrust into a castle about to burn down with a timer. :wacky: And then I realized there was treasure everywhere! So I had some fun rushing about the place trying to get them all and fight my way through the enemies without running out of time. I missed the ribbon though. >_> But I got everything else, so huzzah :awesome: And then that sergeant at the gate was a flippin' death claw. I think I said "What the fuck" a couple times; he wasn't very hard, it was just I only had 1 minute and 47 seconds left on the clock. Beat him in about a minute though and escaped before I was obliterated. :awesome:

So that whole part was fun. :monster: Then I went down to the Library of the Ancients, skirted the desert after seeing the beasties there and since they seemed pretty strong I didn't want to get wiped out--trying to avoid a game over screen still. :awesome:
The Library was a cool dungeon, but I actually got a bit annoyed at the stupid book fights, possibly because you fight one enemy at a time before it disappears and another pops up. :wacky: I missed a chest in there though, not sure how, so maybe I'll go back in and try to get it.
I don't think Ifrit is optional, as Avec said, so yes I got him. :awesome: The final boss was pretty easy, had no problem with him.

The library is actually the first place I learned some Blue Magic; Bartz has Learning as his ability so he got to learn a couple spells. Aero and something else :monster: Have to check again. So he's the only one learning Blue Magic now. It's definitely not a priority with me.

Anywho, as for character stats and what they ended the chapter with:

Bartz - lvl. 18 - Red Mage (Past experience - Blue Mage, White Mage, Mystic Knight)
Lenna - lvl. 18 - Beastmaster (Past experience - Thief, Monk, Time Mage)
Galuf - lvl. 18 - Red Mage (Past experience - White Mage, Black Mage, Summoner)
Faris - lvl. 18 - Monk (Past experience - Knight, Berserker)

Galuf is a King? This is the first I've heard of this, I never got this far in the game and though I've heard quite a few things about characters dying and Gilgamesh being funny awesome outside of gameplay, this never came up.

This was a pretty short easy chapter, Mystic Knight+Twohanded+Fira ends most difficult enemies in this chapter. I was momentarily worried about having a one-on-one fight with Butz, thankfully it wasn't gameplay. Dragon Grass boss was a real battle of attrition, Butz keeping up with Esuna, trying to get the right rhythm going so Lenne attacks after Faris or Galuf takes out the respawning little enemies. Never got close to death but I did have to use an Elixir to keep Galuf dealing damage.

I died so much during that stream. Like on almost every single boss.

I had the stream playing while I was getting ready to leave for an evening with family. Omg I was laughing, I couldn't help it. :awesome: Sorry Lex, your pain was our pleasure. :monster:

I hate my new computer, I hate my new computer, I hate my new computer. So I was willing to accept no Heavensward okay. That's fine. but now I'm having sound driver issues, The touchpad controls the zoom on websites and apparently a few other functions and the overall design is just shit. I'm going to go back to Walmart from who I woefully did not purchase the extended protection plan and try to get this refunded and get something new this payday. If that doesn't pan out I guess I can try to turn off the touch pad and use an optical mouse and as for the sound driver issues I can reinstall or just not listen to music.

Anyways, here's my journal on Chapter 7.

Read here.

So I've recently just started chapter 5....

And I'm puttering around in my little glorious fire ship, and decided to explore and check out this town on this interesting crescent shaped island.
Earthquake starts up and my ship sinks. :monster:
Old guy in town is laughing at me.
Hear mention of black chocobos in the forest. Sweet!
Got to forest, catch one, start to fly, get bucked off. :monster:
But wait, the chocobo just had something stuck in his gullet! Crystals? More Jobs? Sweet!

And suddenly I'm flying! And I, ladies and gentleman, have upgraded from a large glorious puttering fire ship to a........

........a.........

....a black chocobo with salsa music.

But he flies. I do like flying. It's stylish. And he goes over mountains too--waaait mountains?!
He's better than my fucking dragon. :wackymonster:

I shall enjoy my purple black chocobo greatly. :awesome:

Alright, I've made it through Chapter 8 (and I guess a little bit into 9 without realizing it, actually). Guess I should make some sort of post. Here's hoping I can actually remember what I thought of every chapter :monster: I really ought to start taking notes while I'm playing...

Chapter 6

I'll admit - I've been using a walkthrough for this playthrough fairly often. I really didn't feel like having to "trial and error" my way through the Shifting Sands, so...I didn't. I also relied on the walkthrough to tell me the fastest way to bring down Sandworm boss. Hey, I like this game, but trust me - I've died way too many times for my liking even on this playthrough, so I'm using the help when I don't feel like wasting too much time.

The addition of the high-technology (I know, I know, it's ancient or something) is always a little surprising in this game (and games like it), as it's otherwise super medieval, but I really like it. Also, can I just say again how much I looooove the soundtrack for this game?? Anyway, fighting the actual floating...city or whatever it is before you can enter it is super cool. It actually took me a bit to remember that you have to approach the cannons in order to start the fights, haha. Oh well!

Chapter 7

Force said:
So it took me a bit to think to use a tent on that starting island...what happens if you don't have one?

Well, one of the girls will suggest that you set up a tent for the night, and the only enemy on the island does you no good other than to drop a singular tent whenever you kill them. I'll admit that I also forgot briefly about using a tent when I got there, but the girls gently reminded me, and upon that realization, I decided to try to farm a few tents, because why not? A rather low encounter rate + no experience for a singular tent per battle is why not, turns out. I only wasted enough time to do maybe 3 battles on the island.

Anyway, love Exdeath's theme, loved Galuf coming to the rescue (I'm really glad I didn't have him set up as a wimpy mage or something at that point) and abosLUTELY loved running across the Big Bridge and jamming along with the music as I made mincemeat of the enemies :P I love Gilgamesh's ridiculous personality and the stupid excuses he uses to cover the fact that he's tired of getting whooped by the party.

Anyway, made my way to the first town available, bought a bunch of new stuff, then went down to the Sealed Castle because people warned me not to.
Screw you, dudes!
Got to the Sealed Castle, went in, was eated by dagrons.
Ok, you dudes might be right. :hohum:

Anyway, made my way into a forested area, and caught sight of a moogle. It runs off, so of course I chase after it, because why not continue to try to run after and catch a terrified animal? Turns out we're still the good guys, though, and we end up saving said animal. Hail the concurring heroes, and all that jazz. The monsters in here are pretty tough, with lots of HP, but my ninja threw a bunch of scrolls at them and my summoner, well, summoned. Worked out pretty well. Saved the animal, was taken to its secret village and given a bunch of prizes ("Guys, I swear, it's telling us to take this stuff, honest....yeah..."). I don't really understand the Dancing Dirk. I've equipped it on a couple of people, mostly accidentally by hitting "optimize" in the equipment screen, and then the person twirls around, doing nothing, instead of attacking whatever is currently trying to kill me. So I've not been using it.

Chapter 8

This chapter was fine, a little shorter as Flint said. At one point, I accidentally loaded my last save state instead of making a new one, but it only set me back maybe 10 minutes, so not much was lost. Thank goodness. I got the Golum on my way to find the dragon grass, and didn't have much problems with the enemies on my way to the top, other than the fact that they have copious amounts of HP. Dragongrass Boss thing didn't give me much trouble at all, as Galuf throwing a Fire Scroll killed all of the little saplings every time they spawned before they could even do anything, and I was able to do decent damage with Bartz as a Samurai, Lenna as a Time Mage casting Comet, and Faris as a Dragoon using Jump. Went pretty well!

I'd write more but honestly I'm getting really hungry and my dinner is ready so......

Bartz - Samurai with Two-Handed and a nice Katana equipped

Lenna - Time Mage with Summon equipped

Galuf - Ninja with Blue Magic equipped

Faris - Dragoon with Counter equipped

Old guy in town is laughing at me.

I noted this in the chapter as well. This game really likes to laugh at misfortune. Remember when we first met Cid? :D

Chapter 8
Aww, Moogles. They sure change in the game that follows! [In fact, I only finished FFVI last night, and Mog was probably my strongest magic user going]

The dynamic between Bartz & Galuf is pretty humorous. I guess the natural reaction is surprise when your newfound drinking buddy turns out to be a king.

Bartz “let’s go get ‘em!” attitude has taken a new step. “No one has ever come back alive.” *Everyone lowers head* Bartz, without having moved a muscle: “Let’s go” – That was it. He doesn’t even justify it anymore :P

Castle Fun:
Holy shit! Impersonating a merchant. I really laughed at that – it’s why I have Bartz as my party leader; he just looks so funny when he does stuff like this. If anyone sees this before playing, go to the back of the weapons & armory shop in Castle Val, click on the wall where there looks to be a switch on the other side – then go up to the counter :D
Also, stock up on Softs and head to the basement for some serious ABP gains. (Or use LVL. 5 Death)

That Dancing Dirk weapon from the Moogle Village is great – Galuf did this attack called “Sword Dance” and, equipped as a Ninja, thus two blades, performed about 2,500HP with each strike!

When you leave the cave, avoid the mountain cave to the north-east. It’s no craic. Just don’t go. “Found 10 Gil” “Found 20 Gil” “Found stupid turtles giving stupid game overs”

Bartz VS Kelga (Kelger), with Reina taking a seat to watch. “Misunderstanding fights” like these only work in old games like this - I had to check with other scripts afterwards; they make more sense of the situation than the version I was playing (where mine really left it open for Galuf to step in again and say “no, wait, listen” or something of the sort) :P

Don’t think I’ve mentioned my love for FFV’s “shocked eyes”
f36vky.png

@The cut-scene of the four Dawn Warriors sealing X-Death
I figured that area in Bartz's world had something to do with his being sealed away. I noticed the rocks disappearing after the crystals had been shattering.

♥ ♥ ♥ Kelb Village ♥ ♥ ♥
Oh my God I did not want to leave. ♥ Werewolves ♥
The three guys performing the ceremony for our safe return ♥
Yes, I got in the way and ruined their sync & alignment, but one had taught me a new song, so it’s all going to be okay, it’s all gonna be fine!
I got to stay at an inn where this amazing werewolf served “vittles” – no idea what this meant until I googled, but I got 8 tonics, and again and again! But then I didn’t get any more, and the sheep were all gone…
And then I slept at the Inn and he stayed in the room…wish I was sleeping there too…
So Tuss was the name of the heroic werewolf at the scene of the Fire Crystal’s destruction. It shall be honoured!
Also, a man popped out of the well, begging for a frog. I’ll be back.

What a unique way to gain a summon. Golem acquired!

Bartz as Sorcerer, with Fire 2 Sword (equipped with Dancing Dirk) used Sword Dance against Dragon Zombie and dealt 6,240HP – well, that ain’t too bad. At level 26, too!

“Grass isn’t supposed to attack people” – Reina
Beautiful line ^_^

That scrofulous plant was the cause of the dragon extinction?? And what a let-down the boss was – Faris equipped with Crossbow (Killer Bow) killed it in one go :closedmonster:

Saved the dragon, all is good, and I wanna go to the werewolf village again ♥

Reina - White Mage (Lvl. 6)
Galuf - Ninja (Lvl. 2)
Faris - Hunter (Lvl. 3? - Mastering anyway)

A brief write-up of chapter 8: another fun one. I loved the flashback; it was a rare plot twist in this game that I didn't see coming. Everything about Qelb was pretty great, in fact, right down to the dancing werewolves praying for my safe return. Even after I returned.

I actually got a game over in my first fight against the Dragon Pod - after the boss itself had been defeated, but before I could wipe out its seedlings. Everyone got confused and basically killed themselves. I think I just got unlucky; I had been using scrolls every turn and they had been working well, but I didn't manage to get the last one off in time. On my successful second attempt I used two characters to do multi-target attacks each turn, which made it a bit slower but a bit safer.

Character check:

Butz, level 29
Currently: Beastmaster 1 (0) + Red
Others: Knight 3, Monk 5, Thief 2, Mystic Knight 5 (1), Red Mage 3

Lenna, level 30
Currently: Ranger 3 (2) + Summon
Others: Monk 1, Thief 2, White Mage 4 (3), Black Mage 3, Time Mage 3, Summoner 3, Beastmaster 1 (0), Geomancer 3/Mastered

Galuf, level 29
Currently: Ninja 4 + Berserk
Others: Knight 1, Monk 4, Thief 2, Berserker 1, Mystic Knight 4

Faris, level 29
Currently: Thief 6 + Learning
Others: Ninja 2 (1), White Mage 1, Black Mage 4 (3), Summoner 2, Blue Mage 3

Numbers in brackets are job levels from the end of chapter six, so you can see what I've been working on. Galuf hasn't gained any levels because Ninja 5 takes a lot of AP.

Chapter 6

And the setting finally decides to turn the normal fantasy tropes on their heads. Interplanetary travel does exist it turns out, but instead of using sci-fi technology, we're using meteorites propelled by magic. I love settings like this. Usually the in-universe magical explanation ends up being internally logical because magic already is established as existing, nobody's expecting the 'verse to work with normal physics anyway. Compare that to most sci-fi 'verses which go out of their way to at least sound like they're using plausible physics, but never do for story-related reasons.

Oh, and Ex-Death (seriously, who named this guy?) is an evil alien who can posses people who wants to take over another world.

I do find it interesting how everyone decides to drop everything and follow after him even though they know they won't be back. At least they left their R&D team behind who are the types of people who'll want to figure out how to bring them back just for the heck of it. It's not like Cid and Mid don't have all the parts of a floating city to research....

Job/Caracter Info

Learned White Wind, Flamethrower, 1000 Needles and Level 4 Gravia. Having Scan on someone is looking promising.

All characters are Lvl. 36

All Jobs are at:

Knight: Mastered!
Monk: Mastered!
Thief: Mastered!
Dragoon: Lvl 0
Ninja: Lvl 4
Samurai: Lvl 0
Berserker: Lvl 1
Ranger: Lvl 3
Mystic Knight: Lvl 6
White Mage: Lvl 6
Black Mage: Mastered!
Time Mage: Lvl 6
Summoner: Lvl 5
Blue Mage: Mastered!
Red Mage: Lvl 3
Beastmaster: Lvl 3
Chemist: Lvl 0
Geomaster: Mastered!
Bard: Mastered!
Dancer: Lvl 0

Not much to say about jobs here. I haven't tried out the new ones, but they'll be the first to get ground out to one level before mastery once I find a good grinding spot. Just from looking at job descriptions though, it looks like Chemist is what all the item drops are for and Dancer is probably the lethal joke job of the game given that all the random commands are beneficial and some do crazy damage oh, and you can raise the chance of the crazy damage command happening if you gear right.

The next jobs to master though are Ninja, Summoner, White Mage and Ranger. Ninja and Ranger are both getting mastered for their mastery abilities (Duel Wield and Rapid Fire), Summoner is getting mastered because it has the highest magic stat in the game and White Mage because now that Blue Magic has White Wind I might as well get it out of the way.

Discussion: This is quite a short chapter - I'd make it longer, but I don't want to break up the next part of the game, which can be a bit tricky. There are some optional things to do in this chapter, however, which I'll hint at: you can visit a castle you saw earlier in the game, and you can unlock a hidden summon. Did you do either of these things? If it's your first time, did you find them yourself or did you follow a guide? What did you do about Lone Wolf, and why? How did your battle with Garula go? What do you think of your new jobs? Did you do any shopping in Karnak?

Just finished chapter 3! haha I'm so far behind.

I think I would have been done with this chapter a lot sooner if I hadn't kept trying to
get Shiva. I'm assuming that when I'm done in Karnak I will maybe be able to get her? I hope? She really kicked my butt.

-I set Lone Wolf free. By RPG logic it just seemed like something I should probably do. :monster:

-I did not unlock any summons, as you can read above. :P

-Garula kicked my butt a couple times.

-The new jobs seem pretty cool. As for right now I have have:

Bartz: Red Mage
Reina/Lenna: Summoner (not that I have anything to summon, I'm just trying it out)
Galuf: Sorcerer
Faris: Theif

-Yes I did shop in Karnak, until they threw me in jail. :closedmonster:

Chapter 9

Gilligan’s island didn’t last.
Thankfully, some hints from Castle Val and Kelger say Zeza is amassing a fleet.
By the way, maybe it’s just the version I’m playing, but there was an @ symbol in one of Kelger’s line. Actually, the whole segment was presented pretty badly (weird spacing, quotations the wrong way, hard to tell when a line was either from Bartz, Faris or Reina, while the others were Galuf or Kelger) - nothing important though :P

Wait! That book at Surgate Library the scholars are raving over...wasn’t the other half in Library of the Ancients? Ooohhh

Galuf has learned since Kelb Village a better safer way to reintroduce his friends :monster:

Yes to that music on Zeza’s Ship – and, as anticipated, Gilgamesh has arrived!
Ah, what an entertaining battle. No trouble whatsoever, though. Enkido got a White Wind in before a Shuriken (which was doing 2,244HP each time to both of them), Comet and basic attacks like ‘Drain Sword’ (Sorcerer) destroyed him – as they did with Gilgamesh pretty easily.

Music while in the sub is beautiful.

Atomos was a challenging boss. So once I realised he did little more but suck a character in once they were K.O.’ed, I left him to it and hacked away with Drain Sword and throwing Shurikens. It was all going well until, unbeknownst to me, Galuf had in fact the Bonemail equipped [must have happened with optimal equipment when I change jobs recently – and I’m normally so good at catching it…] :\ - so, once he (my main damage dealer) was K.O.’ed, I couldn’t revive him. (Bonemail leaves a character in zombie statue)
Faris got sucked in, and Galuf was just about to too, meaning I’d be as good as left with one character, but Bartz and that legendary Sword Dance move (thanks to my Dancing Dirk) took out Atomos before things went insane.

Brutal ending. Sad how we wait for Galuf, who just wants “a little longer” :(

Looking forward to CH. 10 - in the meantime, I'm gonna explore around a bit.

Exdeath isn't standing out all that much. His subordinate though? Yeah, Gilgamesh is a refreshing take on all the random people who stand guard over RPG characters and just get knocked out so the protagonists can escape. It'll be interesting to see what made him go from glorified door guard to dimension hopping across the Final Fantasy worlds.

And Uematsu is really nailing his soundtrack. I like how all the music on Galuf's world sounds different then the Bartz's world's music.

As far as gameplay goes, I picked up a bunch of new spells and equipment in town and it turns out Kuza Castle is an awesome grinding spot so long as you bring someone with Control and Time Magic abilities with you (Control Shield Dragon, Haste person with Control, GG). Oh, and all those weapons in there look awesome!

Job/Caracter Info

Picked up Death Claw (Blue Magic), which would be an awesome spell if it's accuracy was better. White Magic is a lot more useful now that I have both Shell and Protect. Blink looks nice too. Black Magic is clearly at a disadvantage now to Summoning, but I did get the Black Magic Spells in town as those are all Spellblade abilities.

Characters are now Lvl 37 and the Job levels haven't changed since last time.

Thoughts on the new Jobs now that I've had a chance to play with them a bit. Dancer is a lot more potent then it sounds, just make sure they're in the front row and someone else has a healing spell on them (White Wind). Sword Dance is probably my hardest hitting physical attack at the moment. I've also got a Ribbon from somewhere, which means I don't have to worry about status effects. Chemist is a job to master so that other jobs can use it's abilities; it's got no damage by itself (then again, I don't have Mix yet). Dragoon is okay, but it's a tad to gimmicky for my tastes. In order to get any damage out of it, one of the characters essentially has to be absent from healing/buffing spells the whole battle. It is one of the only physical classes that can hit the back row for full damage though. Samurai is a lot more consistent, and if you've been hoarding gold, it'll be a great class for boss fights.

Character Set-Up

Faris: Dancer w/ Time Magic
Galuf: Chemist w/ Summon Magic
Bartz: Dragoon w/ Blue Magic
Lenna: Samurai w/ Two-Handed
