Chapter 3: Every Game Has One

Target: When you return to the World Map after this scene, before boarding the Fire Ship. (Sorry the picture is so small.)

Discussion: This is quite a short chapter - I'd make it longer, but I don't want to break up the next part of the game, which can be a bit tricky. There are some optional things to do in this chapter, however, which I'll hint at: you can visit a castle you saw earlier in the game, and you can unlock a hidden summon. Did you do either of these things? If it's your first time, did you find them yourself or did you follow a guide? What did you do about Lone Wolf, and why? How did your battle with Garula go? What do you think of your new jobs? Did you do any shopping in Karnak?

Chapter 2

I could see the character reveal coming a mile away, mostly becasue I talked to the dancers in the pub and then whet up-stairs to talk to Faris. Given that Bartz had the same reaction to both of them... heh... also, some of Faris' jobs look more like how Lenna dresses then the Bartz and Galuf do. I'm actually more interested about how Lenna and Faris and King Typhoon are related.

The boss fight was pretty easy, in fact, I made sure to not attack anything until the second boss came out so I could get both bestiary entries (and their drops). On the other hand, I suspect I'm overleveled at this point, which is how I like to play; it lets me get through the story fights easily.

I stuck around long enough on the mountain to steal four Silver Specs as they give the same stats as the Leather Shoes accessory, but also make you immune to Blind. For some reason, the Optimize command prefers Leather Shoes over them... then I went on a grind-fest...

Current Job info before the start of Chater 3:

All Job Levels
Knight: Lvl 4
Monk: Lvl 4
Thief: Lvl 5
Black Mage: Lvl 5
White Mage: Lvl 5
Blue Mage: Mastered

Party Set-Up
Faris: Thief w/ Barehanded
Galuf: Monk w/ White Magic
Bartz: Knight w/ Two-Handed
Lenna: Black Mage w/ Equip Shields

General Stats Observations
Faris and Lenna are faster then Galuf and Bartz are and they have higher Magic. This makes it so that I want Faris and Lenna to be my main damage dealers and have the guys on "clean-up" duty.

Chapter 3: Every Game Has One

It really feels like the game doesn't hold your hand much in telling you exactly where to go or what to do next. So it was whilst randomly flying around trying to find out where the next event takes place that I discovered that I could fly over the meteor and gained access to the castle from the beginning of the game. The cut scene was a nice surprise, though it's funny how Faris just doesn't want to even contemplate or tackle the fact that she and Lenna are family.

In any case, had a quick snoop around the place before grabbing the powerful Healer rod from the Chancellor out back. Didn't spot the hidden summon. Not sure where that was.

Having levelled up a little, Garula didn't pose much of a problem. Went on a massive Gil hunt so that I could max out my shopping experience in Karnak and have acquired everything there.

Still trying out some of combinations, but the new jobs are interesting. Have started playing around with a Red Mage and a Mystic Knight in my party. Not sure if I will use Berserker. Haven't tried Summoner or Time Mage yet, but I imagine they will be useful secondary abilities rather than as a main class for my team.

Just trying to gain some AP before the next chapter.

End of Chapter 3 Job Status

Butz - Mystic Knight Lv.2
Lenna - Red Mage Lv.2
Galuf - Monk Lv.3
Faris - Knight Lv.2

Fiiiiinally got to start the game. I've been so freaking busy with Micah getting out of the Navy, and then I went to Florida for a 4 days to hang out with my mom and sister. I've gotten through all of Chapter 1 and about halfway through Chapter 2, so I hope to be able to fully catch up by the end of the weekend. Anyway!

Discussion: After playing this chapter, what are your first impressions? If this is your first time playing the game, what are your expectations? If you've played it before, what are you looking forward to? (Use spoiler tags if necessary.) Do you have any plans for your newfound jobs or will you just play it by ear?

This is my second time playing the game, and I am just so thrilled about it. I loved it the first time I played, which was several years ago now (on Force's recommendation, of course), and I've been holding out hope for the last couple of Community Playthroughs that we would actually choose FFV. Honestly, I'm looking forward to everything. EVERYTHING. I won't even bother to break it down into spoiler worthy bits right now, because I could go on at length and I really should be going to bed, so I won't do that.

As far as my jobs go - I don't really have set plans. My starting job setup is as follows:

Bartz - Knight (I like to have a heavy hitter, and I'm pretty sure I had Bartz start as a Knight the first time I played, too, so I know this isn't stretching my boundaries or anything, but schmeeb)

Galuf - Blue Mage (I definitely didn't start anyone off as a Blue Mage last time, so this is kind of new for me. So far, the only Blue Magic I have is Goblin Punch, but it did butt-tons of damage to that crab boss you fight early on in the game, so I was really thankful that I had gone that route. Seriously. 240 damage per hit.)

Lenna - White Mage (Gotta have a healer, and it just seems appropriate to have her be the White Mage)

Faris - Thief (I'm pretty sure I started her out as a Knight last time, but Thief seems an appropriate class for a pirate. I've been stealing like crazy, but so far it's only garnered me a few potions. Ah well, that's less money I have to spend at the stores.

First time playing :)
Downloaded it from the playstation store, playing it on the PS3.

Chapter 1
That you cannot skip a character's turn (with good oul' :triangle:) could make for some interesting battles. Reina's turn almost always comes before Galuf and Bartz, and I like to have the others attack first and see what I should do afterwards [attack a different enemy, get front row enemies out of the way, consider a multi-attack etc.], or even just have her gauge full and ready for when I need her, so this will make for some more challenging battles.

The job system was something I had some initial uncertainty about beforehand, but I'm fine with how it works in this game.

No other impressions or expectations to dwell on as of now [well, that I felt at the time I played it a few days ago]. Regardless, I'm curious enough to have opened it again to play Chapter II today :)

Chapter 2
I found a 'Flail' - maybe wasn't so secret a find, but it's proven useful for my white mage.

I was quick to feel
sad for Hydra (Syldra) :( This should not be the end! These things---proper friendships between people and non-humans---get to me real quick.

That
Faris is a woman
came as no surprise. The NPC at Tule who says
the monster only attacks women
was enough to have alarm bells ringing that something else was to be at play.

Yay! World Map!

And yes to Galuf's power-slap!
I dislike concepts of "draining life force" and similar, so taking Siren down brought with it some personal gratification.

That mountain really brings FFVII to mind. Don't step on the flowers...don't step on the flowers (and do not feel tempted to run, especially with a thief in the party)

Had no difficulties with the bosses on the mountain. The Monk command, Store, was taking almost 400HP

The end scene for this chapter reminded me of one more thing I did actually know about FFV :D
And everybody laughed :monster:

Side stuff
Overall, while I didn't initially buy how quickly they all came to work together and interact [Bartz, Reina and Galuf, particularly], I have so far enjoyed their interactions, such as when
they were tied up on Faris' ship
. And, on the second time switching this on (just after the Wind Shrine), it was a bit easier to accept/believe the group dynamic.

Enjoying the music so far. Particularly fond of the Wind Shrine, Ship Graveyard and Tule Village. There's a melody in the Tule Village piece that is played on other songs too, and it's one I really like. I think the melody originates from Lenna's Theme.

Bartz on his side looks like a Sora (KH) sprite, though it's only right to say vice versa :D

I assume something will come out of playing all these pianos? I'll keep playing them all.

Greatest difficulty so far was my encounter with 3 Bandersnatch while my characters averaged level 6. They took an average of 60HP per regular attack, and 100HP for Rush. Not quite a close call, but certainly snapped me to attention.

Party Setup:
Bartz - Monk (LV. )
Reina - White Mage (LV. )
Galuf - Knight (LV. )
Faris - Thief (LV. )
I actually don't know offhand - I just switched off the PS3 before coming back to fill in this gap :monster:
I think they're all at least at 3

No real plan in mind right now, but I'm keeping my eye on Reina most of all to make sure I switch her out of White Mage after her next level to Black Mage.
All characters are at level 10.

I'm not going to have much of a chance to play this weekend, but I made Bartz a knight, Galuf a white mage, Lenna a blue made and Faris a Monk. But I might change this.

Going to look up a guide to blue magic though.

I’ve been to visit Tycoon Castle and popped in to see the pirates too. Didn’t get around to getting
Shiva as I wanted to be loaded with Fire 2 and Fire Rods which I now have
but I think I’ll head back after the next chapter.
because I’m not having him roaming around pilfering my loot. Not this time Mr. Wolf
.

Garula was pretty easy once I discovered its
and by that I mean that it’s susceptible to Toad. Good old Toad. I’ve been testing it out on most bosses since the FFVII Relay taught me that you can use Frog Song on Stingers
. Garula still packed a punch but it was manageable.

I changed Lenna to Summoner and also Time Mage for a bit and but right now she’s a Red Mage. I’m not sure if I want to slog through the 999 ABP needed for Dualcast right now though. Also Bartz has mastered Monk, Galuf Blue Mage and Faris Thief.

I forgot that
the Walse Tower disappeared which was a pity because I was using it to stock up on mythril weapons and gaining a little ABP at the same time
.

I bought all the things in Karnak. x4 of each equipment because I like to have one for each member of the party and I had to spend the money I’ve been accumulating on something.

And if anyone wants to know where I'm farming my ABP; it's back at the Ship Graveyard. There's a room with three chests that has you fighting against three groups of enemies. One gives you 1ABP, the other 2ABP and the last, a fight against x2 Undead Husks, nets you 3ABP. There were times when I was getting into a string of battles against the x2 Undead Husks but also times where I was running into the 1ABP battles far more often than I would have liked. I've also been fighting Zu's for the Elixirs and have stolen 99 Potions so I think I'm ready to move on :P

Bartz – Thief
Lenna – Red Mage
Galuf – Monk
Faris – Blue Mage

May change Bartz to Knight and Galuf will probably start on magic focused jobs after I'm done with Monk.

^^Thanks for the training spot suggestion. I've been doing my grinding right outside the channel as you tend to get into fights that give 3xABP fairly often

I forgot about that place! It's the fight with the 3 Bandersnatch enemies, right? I was struggling to find them earlier so I moved on to the Ship Graveyard. I was farming the group of 2 Skeletons 2 Calcruthl for the 2ABP but noticed on Lex's stream that he got 3ABP with the 2 Undead Husks. So thank you Lex for that :D

Discussion: I had a lot of trouble with this part of the game as a kid - it's where I stopped playing, in fact, because I couldn't beat the first boss of the chapter. What was your strategy? Did you manage to get everything from the castle? There's another hidden summon in this chapter (no pun intended) - did you find it? How much blue magic have you managed to learn, if any? Are you spreading it around your four characters or do you have a specialist blue mage?

I'm looking forward to hanging out with you all again. :) Hopefully someone will be streaming - Lex? I'll be joining the playthrough myself in the chapter after this one, but I'll just be commentating again tomorrow night. Also, this is the last chapter I know well, so we'll just have to muddle through from now on. We're making good pace, about a third of the way through the game in two weeks.

Chapter 2

Discussion: What did you think of the character reveal in this chapter, and did you see it coming? One of my feelings about this game is that the way its story is told isn't very nuanced; as The Engineer wrote above, things are played pretty straight. Do you agree, based on what you've seen so far? The boss on North Mountain is probably the toughest you've faced up to this point - did you have any difficulties?

Given that this isn't my first time playing the game, I totally saw the character reveal coming. Even during my first time, I had my suspicions, mostly based on Force's hints while he was gushing about the game to me :P

I feel that the story itself is pretty straight-forward, but I have to say that I really liked that about the game the first time that I played, and it's not any different this time around. My very first RPG experience EVER was FFVII when I was 22, and even though Force lives and breathes that game, I was pretty in the dark about the story. I knew some of the major spoilers, although I didn't know when and where they would happen, but even that didn't help me follow the story. I was completely confused. Copies? Reunion? Nope. FFV's story, however, seems to be a great introduction to the world of RPGs, and the writing/translation is really quite lovely (I've only played the GBA version). I audibly giggle at times. Now, I'll admit that some of the elements may seem to be a bit contrived, but honesty, I think that makes it really approachable. Going back to FFVII, I've now played through it at least 3 times, and it's only because of lengthy discussions with Force and through this forum that I actually feel like I know what is going on. FFV, on the other hand, makes it hard to NOT understand what is going on. Sometimes, I just need to play a game that doesn't make me think too much :monster:

As for the boss on the mountain (Magissa) - I found Force's discovery to be quite useful, although Lenna and Faris were both dead at the end of my first battle with them (more on that later). Still, I learned Aero for my Blue Mage, so cool....

(And by later I mean now)

So I was playing through this chapter, and made it through to the end in little time. "Oh," I said to myself, "this chapter was pretty short, and it's pretty early on in the evening. Maybe I'll just keep going and see if I can get through Chapter 3."

So I kept going. I went to Tycoon, found a bunch of secret treasure throughout the castle, and then made my way to Walz. Bought some gear/spells at the shops, then went through to raid Walz Castle. Found a lot of good shite, was warned about how running into the Jackanapes would be the worst thing in the world, and then went about exploring the Castle, raided a bunch of stuff, and then....ran into the Jackanapes. I forgot they were located in the basement. So I died. And then I realized that I hadn't saved since BEFORE I fought Magissa. So. I fought her again. This time, only Faris died, but I didn't learn Aero. Ugh. I was really upset about that. I can't believe I hadn't saved since them. Consider my lesson learned. So I then went through and did everything I had JUST DONE over again.

Anyway.

Well, interestingly enough, I had already gone back to the castle, prior to going to Walz. I haven't unlocked the hidden summon, because I'm pretty sure it involves going through the area with the Jackanapes, and I'm not quite sure I care to do that at this moment. Maybe tomorrow, once I'm done licking my wounds.

I didn't let Lone Wolf out, mostly because I forgot about who he was. Whoops.

My battle with Garula went pretty poorly. I wish I had bought Slow when I had the chance, although I'm honestly not sure whether he's weak to hit or not. At any rate, Faris was dead at the end of the battle.

I haven't used any of the new jobs yet, but I'm sure I will be utilizing them soon enough. I've already bought some Time Mage abilities :)

I did do shopping in Karnak. In fact, before entering the town, I ran through the adjacent forest and killed those packs of wolves until Lenna ran out of MP, because they drop a pretty nice chunk of change every time you defeat them.

Current Jobs:

Bartz - Knight (I haven't changed him yet, not sure when I will...)

Lenna - Black Mage (I changed her to BLM after I hit WHM level 2)

Galuf - Blue Mage (I keep hoping I'll learn more Blue Mage abilities, but other than almost getting Aero, I haven't.)

Faris - Thief (I haven't decided what I'd like to change her to yet.)

Butz: Blue Mage>Monk, Lenne: Knight, Galuf: Black Mage, Faris: Thief

Turns out Monks are damn good in this game. So I went too Tycoon Castle first, because I falsely remembered from the last time I played FFV that that's where you are suppose to go next. Didn't have much use for the items it got me though. Garula fight went fine, interesting that it just goes right back to the town after killing all the guards. Don't have much use for the new classes, I took a look at the dungeon you need to get through for Shiva but Jackasnapes killed me pretty easy. Let out Lone Wolf, just cause I always liked the cut of his jib in FFVI, no idea what it effects in this game. They arrested me right in the Karnak shop so no successful shopping was done.

I'll be honest, I put the question about shopping into those discussion points partly because you have to go shopping to advance the plot. :monster: Also partly because you can go back to do shopping for real afterwards and pick up some great items. An Ice/Frost Rod or two will definitely come in handy in chapter 4.

I hope you feel better soon, Lex!

My main strategy for the first boss ended up being turn Galuf into a Summoner, go back and get Shiva and get as many turns summoning in as you can. If Ifrit is the hidden summon you are talking then I got him, but he sure seemed non-optional to in the GBA version so maybe you not. Basically give up on Blue Magic, though LVL 5 Death seemed powerful given that my whole party was level 15. I might have switched Faris to another Job but you find the Moonlight Blade and the Thief Gloves in this chapter, a powerful backrow weapon and a acccesory that increases her Steal chance so Thief is looking really good right now.
