I realized I merged chapter 5 and 6 together and played through them both without writing up an adequate post for 5. :monster: Woopsie

Discussion: This is uncharted territory for me - I've never played further than about a quarter of the way through this chapter - so I don't really have any discussion topics. If someone else wants to suggest some, that would be great, but otherwise, just answer this in as much or as little detail as you like: what did you think of this chapter?

As others have said, lots of exploration in this chapter, and the next one, as you finally get to fly about everywhere on the black chocobo and the airship. I enjoyed going around and doing a bit of exploration, particularly seeing places that don't seem essential to the storyline, like Bartz's hometown Lix.

I love the music in Lix. I kind of like the music in the ancient ruins/airship hangar too. It's very different from the other tunes, has that 'ancient magic tech' vibe going for it. I like the different looks of the ruins; I'm always fascinated by ancient tech and ruins in FF games. <3

Re-visited Pirate's Cove, and found Boko! I was wondering what happened to him! A nice little surprise that I got while exploring.
Also visited Jachol Cave and could not fight the Skull Eaters. :awesome: I ran from them and finished exploring the cave.

Anyway this chapter was very much an exploration one, and that's what I mostly remember about it. :awesome: I went into every location I could reach.

Dunno what my jobs were at the end of the chapter. :monster: I forget now.

Discussion: What did you think of this chapter?

I have a lot of thoughts about this chapter. Experienced my first game over on the cannon boss, got to go up against some gigantic spaceship-looking floating city/fortress, Galuf is an alien, ect ect. :awesome:

So the story in this chapter was pretty awesome, I really enjoyed it. Introduced to the strength of the earth crystal, being used in the past to levitate the Ronka Ruins (city back then) high up into the atmosphere. I really didn't expect to see that massive 'ship' come up out of the ground, I loved that moment. Then realizing it was higher than the airship and I had to get material to propel my airship up to the same height was an awesome touch as well.

As ya'll know I died in the first fight with the cannon. It's the aging missiles that did it. I had to go back and grind up my white mage on Bartz and Galuf to lvl. 4 so they could cast Esuna during the battle and get rid of the affliction. :closedmonster: It was either that or getting 50,000 gill to purchase that ring that prevents aging in Istory. I reached lvl. 4 with those two first, so I went that route and had hardly any trouble then. The aging spell even makes cure do less healing; I couldn't keep up in the fight the first time. >_>

And of course, King Tycoon was being possessed, and of course, the earth crystal shatters as well, as I figured. :monster:

Next thing I know, Krile is taking grandpa Galuf back to their world through meteors again and he's gone. Traveling by meteors. Jenovas. XD

Already miss the guy, it's a different dynamic having only 3 characters instead of 4 now. Though the bosses in the meteors seemed adequately scaled down to reflect your now 3-member party.

So far the story, especially in this chapter, had some things I figured were coming and then some surprises. It's not a common thing to see giant spaceship-like cities powered by magic and then to find people traveling to and from your world by meteors. I like that its making V's story more complex finally. <3 As in, it's just a simple fantasy tale.

Also also, new world to explore wooooot :awesome:

Wrapping this up, as for levels, everyone is at level 23 at the end of this chapter now.

Bartz - Mystic Knight. lvl. 5
Lenna - Monk again, lvl. 4 or 5
Galuf - Ninja, lvl. 3 I think
Faris - Knight again, lvl. 3 or 4.

Good to see at least one person was playing over the weekend. Sadly I'm going to be away this weekend as well so you all need to be disciplined and keep going with the game even if there's no stream/Hangout. I promise I'll be around next weekend (12th/13th) because that should be the end of the playthrough!

Anyway, on with the show:

Chapter 11: Pyramid Scheme

Time: Monday 29/02 to Thursday 03/03

Target: After defeating a boss called Merugene/Mellusion/Melusine (depending on the version you're playing) and watching this scene play out.

I'd have had an update by now had it not been for how long I spent manouevering Moore Forest :P -
946ca5b089ecb5b6c55500c441665831a7c6fa63757bf9e2b931350f64e836d1.jpg

So, in order of events I did:
Wormed my way into a place called Moore Village via the submarine. Nice items. And holy hell---piano skills have raised exponentially! “Just a little more and I’ll be a piano master” was said this time!
(The game must be getting pretty late now that you can buy Fire/Ice/Bolt/Cure 3)

Bartz did a Sword Dance while under Fire 3 against an enemy weak against fire (the Mamon). It just died, no HP showed up. Does this happen across other versions, too? (And again even with just regular Fire 3 magic sword – though it looked like it hit a critical)

Found a chocobo forest – can’t ride the chocobo there ‘cause it’s female.
But at least I found a new summon! (And a great spot if I ever feel the need to grind)
I like that the submarine has a light – I hadn’t noticed this before back at the barrier tower.

The sage is a turtle. Love this game!
Glad Galuf’s motivation words to march onwards in arms against X-Death were “For Zeza!”

Went back to Kelb Village before Moore Forest. My God I love seeing the werewolves ♥
Kelger now knows about Zeza. He just said, “I see.... Zeza…” or something to this extent
(And I gave the frog to the old man, who suggested he was going to eat it :closedmonster:)

Moore Forest:
Obliterating MiniMages before they cast ‘Return’. ‘Comet’ after ‘Comet’, I almost feel bad for the little feckers—almost.

Really enjoy and appreciate moments like in the cave area with the moogles, where you have to just wait around until you can move through again.

Spent ages wandering around looking for chests, I must have went up at least three levels!

The boss (those four crystaly things) wasn’t too bad (I wiki’ed afterwards and discovered I had done the right thing in taking them out one at a time, ‘cause it’s when their HP goes low they start using their strong attacks). Bartz with Drai Sword keeping at tip-top condition throughout, Reina on hand with Cure 3 (and shell), using her time magic for Comet when the party was doing fine (and, beforehand, Haste 2). Galuf and Faris as the hard hitters hacking away at them.

What a battle between Galuf and X-Death!
Yet: “Galuf’s flame flickered out” :sigh:
Now I finally see X-Death for a villain prick (well, to some degree still not – maybe if I could see beyond his helmet)

At least Galuf didn’t go full Aerith by making him redundant to level up :\

That scene, though, is familiar. I've seen it somewhere before on a video where someone pointed out someone attempting to use phoenix down to revive someone (from actual death) - of course, that proved nothing (it was just a case of using any restorative means). Anyway, don't any one of ye use an Elixir without my permission again :P

Back on another visit to Kelb village, Kelger notes how he is the last of the Dawn Warriors – for the love of God this game better not take him too. I have such a bad feeling about it – maybe it was just the way the script worded it, but during Zeza’s sacrifice in the Barrier Tower, he said something that came close to suggesting as if the old Dawn Warriors had to go, as if to pass on their power/burden to the next generation. Again, probably just me interpreting the wording that way, but still… :(

X-Death’s Castle:
Well, further to my last point…
May not be about what Zeza said, but anyway:
I felt sick when I heard this music come on and showing the werewolves by Kelger’s side.

But, you know, he went with confidence and as a hero, and it was kind of a comforting death in that he knew, calling it the Big Sleep, seeing Galuf and whatnot…
I guess this game doesn’t have to go and fuck itself, after all
:closedmonster:
I get far too attached to certain characters.

Anyway, when the illusion is broken…even the battles continue to flash those pulsating walls (bodies?) at you.

Not quite as small and innocuous now as you are in other games, are you, Mr. Carbuncle? Still cute, though. You may join my party.

The 3x Blue Dragon was possibly the hardest enemy formation I encountered so far in the game (though a successful Demi 2 really helps), but gaining 15ABP is just excellent!

I was enjoying that Gilgamesh battle until X-Death had to ruin the fun! Must have been really lucky, ‘cause I just stole a Genji Helm from him right before he was banished :O
Won an Excalipur – this is familiar, and I assume this was what he fought with, having mistaken it for the Excalibur :D

All things considered, X-Death wasn’t a challenge. I maintained my buffs throughout, he wasted his time dispelling them, and overall he only managed to K.O. someone once (excluding Condemned at the start of the battle). Slowish battle, but no moments of urgency. (Bartz wasn’t even attacked once, haha).

Now back to familiar territory. I walked up to the castle to save there, and noticed a gap in the mountain range behind it. That wasn't there before...

Anyway, hopefully get a little more from Reina and Faris again. They seemed very quiet in Galuf's world; I suppose there wasn't much relevant for them to interact with, but still

Side-Note:
Sshot and Ninja combo – I almost feel like I’m cheating :monster:
(Although, I stopped using this after a while in place of more prudent commands and abilities)

Characters at LVL. 35, one at 36 (so almost all at 36)
I won't go into listing who has what jobs here, for one particular reason I'm sure some of you can guess why.

It was only a matter of time: I put all my characters' job levels in a spreadsheet so I can plan more easily.

The decimals indicate how close a character is to reaching the next job level, bold indicates a character's current job, green cells indicate that a character has mastered a particular job, and orange cells indicate that a character has learned all the abilities I currently consider useful from a particular job. For example, there's no point in making anyone become a level 6 Black Mage at the moment because I don't have any level 6 black magic.

The current situation is that I'm about to enter Exdeath's castle, towards the end of chapter 10. I did a spot of job grinding earlier so that I could successfully navigate the southern path in the Gil Cave, which I did a few times until I had about half a million gil. My strategy, which I'll admit to copying from the FF Wiki, was to have three Bards singing Requiem almost every turn and one Samurai with Cover and evasion-boosting equipment absorbing attacks. One of the Bards had Summon (for Golem), another had White (for Blink) and the last one had Time (for Float). The only difference between my strategy and the one I copied is that I used a Samurai instead of a Knight, because Samurai evade some attacks innately.

So sad. :'(

Even though I knew Krile would become a playable character at some point, I didn't know that this was the reason. I'm super-relieved that she inherited Galuf's abilities.

Finally caught up!

A lot's happened and I don't remember all of it so I'll just skim over the details ...
Finally figured out the jobs and now that I'm using them properly stuff's been a lot more fun and gone way more smoothly. I've learnt a reasonable amount of blue magic that's come in a lot of use. I spent a fair amount of time grinding just to get level 5 death before I went up to fight on that floating city thing (can't remember what it's called now) the second time cos it didn't go too well the first time. BUT didn't realise that cos my phone gives me a resume option rather than load game, I started up with the 4 smaller cannons already dead so when I went up again with new magic, levels and full health I only had to take down the big guy :D

Galuf's world was fun, I LOVED my fights with Gilgamesh and I'm hoping I haven't seen the last of him. I was running around dressed as a moogle for quite a while before I figured out how to get out of the moogle forest :P It's really sad about Krile's parents, I'm hoping maybe they'll make some kind of future appearance, or at least that we'll properly find out what fate they met. The submarine theme was beautiful and relaxing. I picked up the Catoblepas summon and did a bit of grinding in the sea cave, mainly to try to level my jobs up a bit. I do miss Galuf :( he was so funny, but at least we get Krile with all his skills, so it could be worse. And it means I don't have an old man parading around as a shirtless monk anymore :P I was pretty scared of going into Exdeath's castle but it wasn't so bad. I spent a lot of time wading through lava before I figured out what the stairs were and then I managed to fight Gilgamesh before Carbunkle, cos I got a bit turned around), but meh, it didn't seem to matter.
And now we're 'back home' :closedmonster:
I was so suspicious of all things in Tycoon Castle, especially when those dancers kept knocking me outta the way like some demonic, possessed, uh, things. I don't like just being a party of two, but we made do. And it was good to see Boko again, and his missus <3 Faris fucking about with the rope cracked me up :D and then whew three is much better. I like when there's literally no other path I can go cos it means I can't get lost for a change :monster:
That damn pyramid! I was hoping I could get away without a white mage for a while cos I figured Lenna might be back soon, but I burnt through so damn many hi potions in that pyramid. If I ever have to deal with some moving floor with disappearing tiles again it'll be too soon! I'm playing on my phone and touchscreen just isn't delicate enough for that kinda shit! I like the whole fighting the boss before the dungeon though and the backgrounds for the battles were so pretty if I hadn't been near death the whole time I'd have been very appreciative of them. Faris had to step up and take on the white mage role for a bit, but she did good.
I went back to Moore and stocked up on hi potions like no one's business and then I thought I'd go check out that lil house thing that had been locked before to great success. I'll be honest, I totally googled which option to choose but I think the brave sword sounds banging, especially since Bartz doesn't have twohanded anymore.
And then Lenna got herself demonically possessed :O I knew it! I need to go look up that Melusine chick cos damn, like nothing hurt her! I mean I killed her but I don't really know how. And now Lenna's back! I was so relieved!
Everyone's level 39 except Lenna who's 38
Bartz: Mastered Knight with Spellblade (he mastered mystic knight)
Krile: Mastered Monk with HP +30%
Lenna: Mastered White Mage with Summon (she mastered summoner and I like the clothes so she's probably gonna swap over and be a summoner with white magic)
Faris: Mastered Blue Mage with Mug (she mastered thief)

I'm a big fan of Bartz, he's so funny :) I'm really enjoying the game overall. Chapter 11 had me a little tense, I'm not at my best without a full team :P but we're back on track now and ready to kick arse!

Discussion: What did you think of this chapter?

Short and sweet.
I've always liked how V - like X - had the sealed ancient evil be defeated only 30 years ago, instead of 1,000. It's cool to see the heroes from the last go-round living a post-hero life. I dunno, I always enjoyed it.

Being taught that Requiem song was clutch, as Bard!Bartz was doing 1800 damage to all those undead dragons, which also made getting Golem a breeze. I tried to learn Magic Hammer but those enemies used it it everyone except Galuf, of course. This is why I don't bother with Blue Magic, it's a pain in the ass.

The boss seemed like it was going to take a long time, but I was happy to discover that he was vulnerable to Gravity, which made it much easier, Time Magic continues to be awesome.

Jobs:
Bartz - Bard 3, White Mage 5, Summoner 4
Lenna - Ninja 5, Monk 4, Ranger 2
Galuf - Black Mage 5, Time Mage 4
Faris - Dragoon 3, Mystic Knight 3, Knight 5

Random encounters are turned off for now, I see.

Settle down there, Bartz! That’s the captain you’re ogling there!
Oh, and my apologies there, dancers. Am I constantly in your way? :closedmonster:

Interesting tidbit about Faris being lost out at sea if you go into the pirate’s cave and talk to the pirate at the pier.

28urd78.jpg

Aww, Gill. Glad to help roll you back over ^_^

“Mwa, ha, ha! I changed myself into a thorn waiting for my chance!”
Haha! Fuck off, X-Death! :monster:
(Though, later, a scholar says X-Death’s real form is that of a tree, hence why he could do that. Still, that’s not the point :P)

Nice moves, Gill – sure you don’t wanna join our party? Please?

New world map music. I like it.

Nice stop off at the Elder Tree of Moore Forest.

Pyramid dungeon wasn’t so bad. Interesting spot—between enemies being visible, to trap floors and spikes etc.—and some unique battles.

Made mincemeat out of Mellusion. Two sword dances in a row took off over 3,000HP, Sshot taking an average of 2,000+, thanks to it being equipped to a samurai (I had at least one critical with every round), and another character to heal in case. Heck, even TemptTango worked and placed her under confusion!

Glad to have a four-party again, especially with my primary magic user!
And I really hope Gill is all right, too, but I’ve learned not to be too optimistic about this game, this game, which started off so hopeful and optimistic with its chirpy world map music. Hmm…

Bartz, LVL. 37, learning to be a professional Dancer.
Krile, LVL. 38, finished playing Ninjas, is now trying her hand at being a Lancer.
Faris, LVL. 37, almost completed her Samurai training.

And poor oul Reina has fallen behind, still at LVL. 35, and is attempting to master the art of black magic.

I just finished chapter 11.

You know, I've really grown to dislike Exdeath. There was a brief moment when I thought he might be more than a generic evil dude - when he asked the party "Do you even know what I'm trying to accomplish?" - but it turned out that he was just
trying to make himself all-powerful
. That, plus repeatedly showing up out of nowhere, taunting the party and going "Mwa-ha-ha-ha" (not sure if that's a GBA-only thing), has made him pretty uninteresting to me. The obviously sinister music accompanying him doesn't help either. Maybe there's still going to be another plot twist, but I'm not expecting one.

Aside from that, I liked the change of pace in this chapter, with the party getting separated (usually a fun part of any Final Fantasy game) and a temporary lack of random encounters on the world map. Again, it wasn't really obvious where I needed to go to progress the plot, but I was totally OK with that because I had Boko and could explore at my leisure. I liked the subtle (or not) hints from the people in Tule. And it's always nice to see the characters laughing at each other, a dynamic which is a lot more prevalent in V than it is in most other games in the series.

The pyramid was very big and a bit boring. I haven't been following a walkthrough, since this is my first full playthrough, but I have been looking at the list of permanently missable content on the FF Wiki to make sure I don't miss anything important. In this chapter, I had to steal at least three pairs of Thief's Gloves from Sekhmet without killing it. It's a rare steal, about a one-in-thirty chance, so it took me a while - even more so because I decided to grab four pairs now and not worry about getting the last pair when fighting a boss later on. Luckily I can speed up my emulator by holding down R2, so it was a lot less painful than it would otherwise have been. I think I got all the treasure in the pyramid as well, most of which was protected by monsters-in-a-box, but I don't know for certain. It definitely pays to have a Thief in the party when exploring a new level.

I was expecting a boss fight at the end of the pyramid - Sekhmet's brother? - so I was quite surprised not to get one. Of course, Melusine was just around the corner. She was a bit tricky, and I died on the first attempt. On the second, I just bombarded her with Firaga and Firaga-swords, which was enough to take her down before she changed elemental weakness.

I like all three world map songs in this game, but the underwater/Ghido's cave music is even better. Had I played this far into the game before our music event at the end of last year, I would definitely have nominated it.

Butz, Krile and Faris are level 39, while Lenna is level 37. That's fine by me; I've been wanting a bit of level separation for some time, because I'm worried about the possibility of everyone getting wiped out by a level 5 death spell. Now that can't happen. Job levels can be found here, and yes, Force, I'm fully aware that I'm a dork. :P

I got the PC version in the Square Enix sale and I'm up to the end of the "four crystals" boss fight (you know the one), so I'm fairly caught up. If people are up for a hangout over the weekend I'll stream. I know there are complaints about the art style but I've installed a few mods and it looks pretty great to me. The rotten mobile UI took some getting used to but I honestly can't complain too much, it's certainly better than emulating (but these things are subjective).

I actually had no problems with the four crystals boss fight. Probably because I saved up a load of shurikens and got float in preparation for it. I got fairly lucky with the AI though, only one unruly crystal decided to spam spells on me and it only got two off before I curaga'd with Galuf.

*sigh*

Sad moments tho >.<

I'm going to post this a bit earlier than usual because I'm going away tomorrow afternoon.

Discussion: What did you think of this chapter?

This is the penultimate story chapter. The last one will be chapter 14, the end of the game and this event. Chapter 13 will be reserved for side-quests, preparation (job grinding, for example) and catching up. You're welcome to start doing those things early if you want. If you don't plan on doing any of them, you can take a whole week to complete this chapter, until Friday the 11th of March.

Technically, a lot of this chapter is optional as well, but I'm assuming that most players will at least want to find all four tablets before tackling the final dungeon.

Yeah it's been a bit of a rough week for me so I feel off the gaming wagon except my usual FF14/GTAV escapism. Not like "bad shit happened" rough but like "a lot of stuff going on so exhausted" rough. Need to catch back up. But hey, as far as this game goes you know I'm good for it, considering I'm in the retrospective :monster:

There are definitely worse jobs to use exclusively. At least an all-Dancer party, besides sounding like a lot of fun, will be able to heal themselves.

Chapter 13: Hold On a Minute, Exdeath!

Time: Monday 07/03 to Thursday 10/03

Target: Before entering the Void. No screenshot for this chapter because it's purely for doing sidequests, preparing for the final dungeon, and catching up if you've fallen behind. If you're able to catch up, or if you've stuck to the schedule the whole time, we'll be completing the game this weekend!

^I've only one lithograph left to get, and I've been noting down everything else I've been doing in the meantime [only thing I'm aware I haven't done yet is explore the Phoenix Tower]. After I do both, I'll probably be heading straight into the void, so my CH. 12 & 13 will be one entry ^_^ - might be bold and look up online to see if there is anything interesting I'm missing before heading into the N-Zone!
