Chapter 9: Leap of Faith

Discussion: What did you think of this chapter?

Gotta love any chapter that involves Gilgamesh. And I had forgotten his ridiculous dialogue here. :monster:
As stated before, I like how FFV has the previous heroes still around, merely older. And Xezat's pretty cool, the decoy fleet and the submarine plan to take out one of the towers making the barrier was pretty cool. Though you have to figure he wasn't long for the world.

That dungeon wasn't long, but it was hard. Two red dragon monster-in-a-boxes? Guff. And they weren't vulnerable to gravity so I couldn't cheese my way through them either. I had Galuf as a Geomancer in here, though, and he was actually pretty useful, and free cast of Windslash for ~700 damage to all enemies was a pleasant surprise.
I was of course level 24 so the lvl4 Gravigas meant a lot of healing, I had to use two Phoenix Downs and even an Elixir due to running out of MP.
And the Atomos Battle is stressful as all get out, on my second or third try I exploited that it was vulnerable to sleep. Bartz still didn't make it through the fight, but that gave me the time I needed to dish out enough damage with the ladies (Lenna chuckin shurikens and Faris jumping).

Jobs are as they were before, aside from the Geomancer, like I said. Still pushing for that first Dragoon level with Faris...150 AP...

I had a lot of trouble with Levi after the fourth Lithograph, I think it took me 5-ish attempts? Ridic.

^He killed me too, but it was my own fault for still using jobs with little value in the battle. Chemist [EqRibbon], Red Mage [White Magic?], Summoner [Lance] and Berserker [GrabSword] - I'm only using them now to level up for later, and there was little damage output across the board.

Afterwards, straight back to Sorcerer, Black Mage, Lancer [Jump took 5,000HP - and provided temporary safety] and Samurai [Gil Toss for about 4,000HP], and using Bolt 3 and Bolt 3 Sword for mucho damage as well - made sushi out of him then, the bastard :P

Lex

Lmao I used the cheese strat of 4 black mages spamming thundaga (one with a coral ring) - I even had hastega and regen on the party. And it still took me 5 attempts XD. Definitely going to have to grind some in the void before fighting any other bosses!

Lex

Yeah but who wants to climb all the way down there again? If I left I would have just not bothered. And we can't have that.

I was aware he was optional too, and I had already learned the hard way that the exit is around the side through the little waterfall :closedmonster: [went there before acquiring the lithograph]

See, you can't let monsters take ya down like that. Beaten by a boss, and the best thing to do is level up first before going back and taking it down? No way! What you do is you march right back in there and beat him to show who's really boss around here :monster: Tears or no tears! You say, "I don't care if Game Over no. 13 is coming, I'm gonna take down that beast with my party of bards."

I'm feeling a little run down today, throat and sinus giving me grief and whatnot. Sure, if that's not stay indoors and play FFV non-stop material, then I don't know what is :D
I'm off to conquer Phoenix Tower and do a little more exploring afterwards.

(Just wanna say I am really loving this game, and I'm so grateful this is all happening right now ^_^ - thanks for all this, guys. I'd probably have never gotten around to it otherwise)

To you I owe my greatest thanks!

This is my first time doing one of these community playthroughs - I've only been regularly active in the last year or so.

FFV came in second place in the last two polls for these we had, and the last time it was only because the remake had been announced :(. Painful and sad times for all.

Discussion: I had a lot of trouble with this part of the game as a kid - it's where I stopped playing, in fact, because I couldn't beat the first boss of the chapter. What was your strategy? Did you manage to get everything from the castle? There's another hidden summon in this chapter (no pun intended) - did you find it? How much blue magic have you managed to learn, if any? Are you spreading it around your four characters or do you have a specialist blue mage?

I'm looking forward to hanging out with you all again. :) Hopefully someone will be streaming - Lex? I'll be joining the playthrough myself in the chapter after this one, but I'll just be commentating again tomorrow night. Also, this is the last chapter I know well, so we'll just have to muddle through from now on. We're making good pace, about a third of the way through the game in two weeks.

Just finished this chapter.

-It took me three tries to make it through the castle with all the treasure chests. THREE. The first time was because I messed up. I was just going to run straight out of the castle when I remember all the chests that had been blocked by fire. Was trying to backtrack but that didn't really work well. HOWEVER, the second time I died? I was right on the steps, and I swear to god I had JUST defeated Iron Claw right as the timer was hitting zero, but it wouldn't let me go. :sadpanda:

-On my way to the library I ventured into the desert and ran into a Quadraharpy. When I saw it could do 700+ worth of damage I noped right on out of there. Luckily I managed to escape with only two people KO'd.

-The Library confused me at first. Somehow I didn't notice that when you open the one secret hidden passage with the book behind it that you could walk through it after defeating the book. I kept going around in circles before I figured it out.

-Is Ifrit the hidden summon? It seems like he would be required. The talking wall only moves out of your way because of him, and that rat realizes that he's there with you. I still haven't gone back to get Shiva. I should get on that :closedmonster:

-As for Blue magic, I have learend Aero, MoonFlute, GobPunch, Exploder, and ????. Bartz is my only character learning blue magic. I should probably spread it out, yet I feel like the spells never do much damage, so I don't know how often I would use them.

-Is the Werewolf the same guy I set free down in the dungeon? Or is that someone else?

Currently my party is thus:

Bartz: Red Mage
Reina/Lenna: Summoner
Galuf: Sorcerer
Faris: Thief

I may change it up now. Just got some shiny new jobs that look fun. :)

Still behind, and realizing that I've forgotten to do posts for the last couple of chapters....whoops. I'm just going to throw up 9's post before I have to leave for work here, but 10's post will have to wait til later.

Chapter 9

Man oh man, I really need to do these write-ups immediately after I finish them, because I'm really struggling to remember all of my thoughts from this chapter.

It actually took me a bit to remember that you have to approach the enemies on the ships in order to start the battles with them.

I didn't have much trouble with Gilgamesh or Enkidu, but that may or may not have been because I've gotten into this habit of spamming Zeningage when faced with tougher enemies >.>

The tower was definitely a challenge, and I went through most of my Phoenix Downs and several of my High Potions, and even a couple Elixirs. I keep forgetting just how tough this game can be, and holy crap Phoenix Downs are expensive (especially when you throw your gil at your enemies.....). Still, I made it to the top. Atomos...holy clams. I had forgotten that he sucks your KOd party members towards him until it started happening. I was able to raise Bartz once before throwing Phoenix Downs at him didn't work anymore (is there a certain point that Phoenix Downs become useless if you don't raise them in time? Sure seemed that way, and that was a waste of several PDs on my end). So Bartz was the first to go, and then Galuf was also sucked into another dimension, and then Lenna....Faris was my only character left, and thank GOODNESS I had her equipped as a Dragoon, because Jump is the only thing that saved me. She had a little over 100 HP left, and miracle of miracles, Jump killed Atomos. It was an ugly, ugly battle, and I considered redoing it simply for the AP that my three other party members missed out on, but I was tired and didn't want to fail on the second try, so I just ran with it. Or, rather, jumped with it, off of the tower :monster:

I feel so bad for the previous heroes of this world :(

-Is the Werewolf the same guy I set free down in the dungeon? Or is that someone else?

No, this is a different one. Poor soul :(

CH. 12 & 13 come as one for me because I did so much exploring during CH. 12 I think I covered everything I could do in CH. 13 (that I am aware of for now, anyway).

After the Pyramid
You know, X-Death, there are some places I’d like to have visited :closedmonster:
Argh! Really? Moogle Forest and Bartz’s hometown?
Poor Bartz…

Exploration:
Poor Boko. Someone should tell him he can go back to his loving, awaiting wife.

@Lugor Bordertown - There is no greater indication than traversing secret passages that this group of people is the one fighting X-Death - for a girl here recognises us, and has given a Ribbon.

Whoops! Drove into the N-Zone (twice) :awesomonster:

@Crescent Island – Is that Mid running around talking about Cid being trapped in the tower? Doesn’t have his name, he doesn’t seem to recognise us, yet I’ve not come across another sprite like his before.

Thanks to some tips from an old man, I found the place called Mirage Village – eerie! They sell some amazing stuff, incl. elixirs and class magic. And I am now a piano master! [Thank goodness the Thief job class was left on from earlier]

@Kerwin Town – “Do you think I’m pretty?” impersonator.
Well, then, the chase is on. I assume this has something to do with “Gogo”? From my recent FFVI wiki days, I discovered that there is a character referred to as something like Famed Mimic Gogo from FFV.
EDIT: No, I've since learned nothing new (though have found Gogo)

@Bahamut – Challenge at North Mountain!? All right, see ya there!
Although, he was a little intimidating. So, I had Faris throw money at it continuously. 5,700HP each time; it was worth it. And then…
Mega Flare… :closedmonster:
It was one of the tightest moments in my FF history, but after he performed Mega Flare, Reina survived with 4HP:awesommonster:
Revived Faris immediately, threw more money at Bahamut…bagged myself this legendary summon :neo: Who says money can’t tame legendary beasts?

Kuza Castle
(Ah, so that’s where the Wind Shrine folk went to)
Really glad the dungeon music continued during the fight with X-DeathSoul!

First lithograph:
Assassin Dagger, Holy Lance and Masamune – for Bartz, Krile and Faris respectively
(Can’t wait to knock lumps out of X-Death and his beasties with these bad boys :P)

Island Shrine
Side-note: Pretty wonderful that Krile deals 4,500HP a pop with Jump (using Ninja ability 2-Swords)

A MechaHead (monster-in-a-box) I fought intercepted Krile’s Jump ability. :closedmonster: - I’m impressed by this diverse skillset among monsters.

Fork Tower
Wanna know how I got past the left side of the tower with ease with only 2 physical attackers? Because I was fortunate enough to not encounter a single enemy up until the boss -who, incidentally, didn't like being attacked physically. I could’ve waited until “return” after “return” eventually conceded in him running out of MP. Instead, I opted to reset. Not so lucky afterwards, where I was able to establish that attacking physically on that side was not a wise decision.

Poor Minotaur boss:
“Have a taste of Power Magic --- Holy”!
*Not enough MP* *Dies*
We’ll move on…

Krile to Mid: Take care of your grandpa. :(

More Exploration

@Underwater Tower – Creepy monster appearances; shadow of themselves as if.
Gogo threw himself into the N-Zone? That’s fine with me now that I’ve got this ‘Mime’ job.

@Castle Val
Acquired Odin – beat him in 45 seconds, mostly using Gil Toss and Flare.
When he finally accepts the fight, he says “Yeah, whatever…” – cheek!
Boss battle music is sped up, fuelling the panic!

@Surgate Castle – Found a note in one of the boxes saying “Lone Wolf the Pickpocket was here!”
So glad to hear from him!!

@Pirate’s Den – Faris and Hydra…

Serpent Trench
Pools of lava, deformed undead enemies all going by the name ‘unknown’, and blissful music that somehow fits in.

From the boss battle: “Nothing personal, just orders-bwi!” – Well, that’s kinda nice.

A quick visit to Kuza castle, leaving only Yoichi’s Bow, Apolon Harp, and Earth bell left to acquire.

Easterly Falls
I was enjoying the fact that this dungeon was not too big at all. Of course, by the time I got to the lithograph, I just had to check what was south of this area :closedmonster:

Encountered a “DinglBerry” enemy, otherwise known as Tonberry – glad the name was changed in later games.

Anyway, after a quick backtrack, got the last lithograph. And it seems that Leviathan is actually optional – still, I got him while I could, of course.

Final Exploration
After getting the remaining legendary weapons, I explored Phoenix Tower and made it to the top to acquire Phoenix, as well as a touching backstory. If I were Bartz, I'd take good care of Boko, because everyone is losing their faithful companions in this game :closedmonster:

Characters all around level 39-41
I've tossed around what jobs I've been using lately, but at this point, bar Mime, every job has been mastered by at least one person, which is helping me get a grasp on what's best for them to learn going forward.

Nearly there now!

I won't be able to play Sunday, and so with limited time tomorrow to play, I've gotten to a certain length today before what I assume is near the end.

I have the most wonderful bad habit in this game – because I’m sometimes half on the laptop when playing this game, my mind wanders often. At save points, I will use tent/cottage and then forget to actually save. So after Omega made me feel worthless, it was time to start the entire N-Zone again :P

So now I’ll restart my account from here. Fortunately, equipping Krile with Hair Ornament (Half MP use) and using Odin’s VengSwrd gets you through the area real fast.

Mirage Village in the N-Zone – freaky! Now I see what that door was for!

And now back to Omega.
To reiterate a post of mine in this thread earlier, never give up! Finding the right strategy is all you need. Though, I confess to stumbling across one piece of info online after I went to check how much HP he has (in short, if he was really worth the time at level 42/43) and that piece of info was that Love Song (Bard ability) can inflict stop. Armed with this knowledge [I regret, but still…], I kept Bartz singing away while Reina and Krile supported, and Sshot with Faris took considerable chunks out of his HP. This was my second attempt after the very first surprise encounter and subsequent obliteration. The previous effort (beam cannon’s “Sap” effect and Maelstrom is a killer) was an attempt at using Gil Toss to the point of poverty, but it just dealt 0 – hmm, real-life parallel :sigh:
Reward: 50,000GP, 100ABP and a shoddy Omega Badge with no one to show off to :P “Your wisdom/strength have beaten the ancient culture”
Gets pretty flashy afterwards when he goes down.

Side-note – Only occurred to me that there is no item that cures Silence in this game.
Another side-note – I finished a boss battle with a character in Toad status so it’s the first time seeing the victory dance – sort of looks like it’s flipping us off.
Oh! And you move about the field as a green toad :excited:

In the dungeon, had to kill a lot of old men for those chests – not exactly exciting prizes either. And that Catastrophe monster was a real thug about his approach, pinning us up against the wall like that :P

Gilgamesh – an interesting battle. He seems so relegated; whether it’s the no change in music, lack of speech prior to the battle, eventual interaction coming across as a one-sided conversation, there was just so much less of him. Still, interesting dialogue – doubt it’s over yet!

Ah, didn’t take too long for him to show up again, and the music too. Quite the dialogue – it’s almost like he scolded Reina and Faris – maybe other translations have better phrasing :D – It was sort of beautiful? I mean, we're attacking him with his back turned the whole time as this goes on (I stopped after a bit and realised the rest just comes scripted)
Didn’t get a chance to steal from him, but I’m not resetting at this point. Who needs smelly oul’ Genji anyway? :P

Characters at level 43-44 now - Learning what I can of a multitude of jobs. ABP gains are great here. Trick to a pair of King Behemoth's: Odin's VengSwrd can destroy them instantly, but if he uses Javelin and you've to recover from the barrage of Meteor that follows, just use Return to go back again without having to heal etc..

One superboss down, one to go, and what an unpleasant surprise he was :closedmonster:
Looking forward to finishing it tomorrow - gotta get the soundtrack now, too.

Lex, since you're the only one to show interest so far, why don't you just stream when it's convenient for you and we'll publicise it in the Hangouts thread and in the shoutbox? I'll definitely join you if it's any time after about 8 PM GMT.

It'll be around 8pm GMT, maybe slightly earlier? Looking forward to finishing, I remember really liking the FFV ending but can't recall specifics.

I finished FFV on Sunday night. What a game! (I was going to finish Saturday, and was watching Lex stream while I gathered some items and abilities to fight Shinryu, but I decided it would be more enjoyable to leave it till the next night when I would approaching my last working day that week - once the scenes prior to the final battle took place, I knew I had to save this till the better night!)

With both superbosses defeated too, I am done with FFV until some other time in the future when I will be glad to start again ^_^

First up, before fighting X-Death, I had to destroy Shinryu. Terribly cruel to hide such a beast in an innocuous-looking treasure chest. To anyone who fights onward, ready yourself with Coral Rings, otherwise Tidal Wave can hit everyone for 8,000HP!
I just lashed out as much damage as I could once I began, no time to heal or buff, and he was gone. Received 'Ragnarok'. Much more rewarding fight than Omega.

Jokes on you X-Death, Cid and Mid are no friends of mine :monster:
(But naw I'm glad to know they're okay after all this, which means Sage Ghido must be too!)

♥♥♥Kelger♥♥♥
I missed you! So glad to see everyone back together like this! Excellent feel-good setup before fighting X-Death.

But to be honest, it was rather a letdown. The first battle was quick [thanks to Haste2 and Sshot with weapons in both hands], and he didn't get a single move in before I had him down. Neo X-Death attempted excitement, but it was easy, I preferred the music in the previous fight, and even its shaky buildup to its major attack only took approx. 750HP (though I did have Shell and Protect). But, see, it's mostly because I never felt much of X-Death as a whole. I found him generic and uninspiring.

The montages at the end were nice, even if Reina's all featured her getting hurt physically/emotionally :\

The Prelude music at the end: So glad a montage of Galuf was here; it was like a beautiful send-off for a part.

Nice ending on the whole. Bartz, Reina and Faris appearing to Krile, seeing them dash across the world map etc..

And that ad/movie for FFV after the "The End" screen was very cool :D - Very nice music, too.

Final Stats:
Bartz - Level 45 - Learned 50
Reina - Level 44 - Learned 46
Krile - Level 45 - Learned 45
Faris - Level 45 - Learned 36

  • I was wary at first about the whole job system, but I've really come to love it in this game
  • Love the characters
  • My heart was broken on numerous occasions, thanks to countless tragedies
  • I bought the soundtrack on iTunes yesterday
  • I want to live in Quelb Village :(

Overall, delighted to have played this game! Thank you all for having made this happen; unlikely I'd have come to pick it up otherwise ^_^ - Especially thanks, Flint, for keeping this all going!
