Final Fantasy VII Settei Gashuu

Anyone heard of this? According to some troll on FFWiki, it confirms the full names of Reno Sinclair, Rude Williams, Sephiroth Hojo, and that he was originally designed by Amano, not Nomura.

I have never heard of this before at all.

What is it supposed to be? The new compilation game?

(also, moving to Comp. Gen.)

Sephiroth's last name would be Hojo? What kinda sense does that make? Last I checked the fathers first name does NOT equal the childs last name. You can tell right there that this guy is full of crap.

Anyway, i definetely have not heard of this thing.

Uh, I assumed Hojo was his last name. I mean generally you don't call professors 'Professor Jeffery' you call them 'Professor Winters'.

So you mean to tell me we go through the whole game, and this guys only name that we ever hear is his last name? Given how important he is to the plot that just seems silly.

Besides, people call him Hojo all the time even when not reffering to him as a proffesor.

Gary Oak is Professor Oak's grandson

but pokemon takes place in Japan so the names are backwards

meaning that Oak is their first name

You've never heard people referred to by their last names? Makes sense to me. We don't need to know Hojo's first name.

and no one is particularly friendly with him so it makes sense that Hojo would be his last name. Plus Hojo is an actual Japanese surname so it makes next to no sense that it'd be his first name.

Wouldn't this just mean that in the Japanese dub his name is Oak Gary?

Given Hojo's importance to the story knowing his given name would be quite nice actually.

Besides, it still wouldn't make sense for that to be Sephiroth's last name. As far as I know Hojo and Lucrecia were not married, so Hojo's last name would not belong to Sephiroth. If anything his last name would be Crescent.

I guess I don't know where you live, so maybe it is different, but usually the child has the father's last name whether his parents are married or not.

Not to say that I'm actually saying Sephiroth's last name IS Hojo, but still, it's perfectly reasonable to see why some might assume it is.

How is that weird? It's a custom that has been in practice for a long time. The father is usually whose surname the child has, not the mother.

This doesn't HAVE to be the case, because the parents can name their kid whatever they freaking want, but as per the norm this is what happens all the time.

At least in the USA and I'm assuming most Western countries. I know in places like Morocco (I think?) the child can have the father's name only if the father allows it. In fact, the child cant have a last name at all unless the father gives it to them.

I'm not saying it hsan't been done, or isn't done. Its wierd because it makes no sense in my mind that the child would adopt the fathers surname if the father is not married to the mother. Its nothing to do with custom or tradition, it just seems wierd to me.

Hojo and Lucrecia were married as far as I was aware. Which was mostly why Lucrecia flipped her shit when Vincent proposed to her (OR WHATEVER HE DID IN THOSE SHITTY FF7 GRAPHICS) because she was already romantically involved with Hojo and possibly already married to him.

you do know that was a joke rite

I figured but I wasn't sure.

Well, that's what's the norm. I'm not sure why it seems weird.

I figured everyone in Shinra was referred to by their last names, seeing as how they are mostly, you know, actual last names. Reeve and Heidegger are not uncommon last names (which is why Tuesti blew my mind and boiled my blood).

Maybe so. That could easily be the case without me ever noticing because I'm not familiar with Japanese names as a whole.
