Final Fantasy VIII hate (split from XV discussion)

Playing Lost Odyssey. Thousand Years of Dreams should be the be all and end all of RPG plots for benchmarking quality.

FFVIII was the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 of the 90s.

all I'll say is

>Novus
>saying TV is poorly written compared to VIII

That was probably the best reversal I've gotten yet besides the Viking bathing post. I lose.

But yeah I think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPn0T4ZpLKE is definitely better written by itself than all of VIII collectively. I never cry, the last time I did involved my gf getting a head injury when I wasn't there to help her and could have been. She suffered a constant migraine and frequent dizzy spells for weeks, my worrying just took hold of me and I broke because the symptoms were a red flag. She's been fine forever now, but I never cried again for eons until Hanna's Departure in LO, if you count a tear or two rolling.

Kaim's just packed full of sadness like this, even if the main game's plot is kinda mediocre.

I like VIII more than I might have made out in that thread. I also totally agree with everything ForceStealer said about the characters.

Cloud is just twenty times cooler than Squall. Sitting there and whining that it was part of Kitase's master plan for Squall to be a Twilight character isn't making me like him.

I've posted before about the physics, or lack thereof, of Final Fantasy VIII's space scene before, because it always annoys me. I know it's a fantasy game, but it was supposed to be the most realistic one in the series so far, and that was, well, the opposite of realistic. I can live with the "coincidence" that is the Ragnarok showing up, but there's no way that Squall and Rinoa should have made it on there. Not without some form of propulsion of their own, like jet packs on their space suits. That would have made it much easier to stop Rinoa from getting lost in space, too... I've always hated that part. Who thought it was a good idea to make the player spend five minutes doing that?

I admit physicality has never factored much in FF but it really did feel like space shat out Ragnarok to save them.

ps. I'd prefer a title like 'was VIII really any good' or something, the title is hilarious and I love whoever made it but it feels like a haters only label. It wouldn't be bad if someone made the story sound good or convinced other people it was better or w/e.

FF has always been a superb experience but I maintain that it's what it chooses to emphasize and the easy going gameplay that grabs people. The quality of the storytelling... Not so great. VII stood out in some ways. VI in a lot of ways.

I don’t think psychological realism of characters is a necessity for good writing, especially when it comes to genre fiction. It wasn’t actually until I discovered this website and read a majority of its articles that I fully appreciated the idea of plot structure over psychoanalytical theory or its thematic content. I’ve also come to realise that the majority of readers (be is lexis or the visual image) actually prefer the former and engage with it more, see the Shademp FF7 uncovered videos or even the Game of Thrones forums to see what the most prevalent discussion is.
Which do you prefer? This interpretation of FF9’s final boss:

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2e8XYPX_sg4C&printsec=frontcover&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=necron&f=false
Or this one written by TresDias(Hawkeye here)

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197338-final-fantasy-ix/faqs/36121

The latter article is old and he may have disowned it now, but the point still stands that the story of a FF may be like that of an ice berg, only the surface visible and the rest is to be uncovered like that of a Sudoku by its audience.
The introduction of the Lunatic Pandora through the eyes of the protagonist’s father inhabited by the consciousness of his future son was revolutionary within the videogame medium. I review all of the games on the success of how they communicated their mythology which is why I score FF8 high.
If you review FF8 as a character script it isn’t good, but if you review the individual clips themselves working as a quasi-interactive novel it becomes something else. As for Game of Thrones, I was actually referring to television and films of the sci-fi/teen genre, Inception, Fringe, Star Trek ect. Vagrant Story would be a better comparison in terms of genre to GOT, perhaps FFTactics too although I’ve never been given the chance to play it (I’ve been told great things and search every month for it on PSN). I actually rank VS over FFVIII in terms of what it achieves on a microcosmic level our minds not be that far apart as you might think in terms of what we expect of historical (magical) realism.
My initial point is really that FF7 and 8 aren’t badly written, the other games already have their share of apologists (X especially). I’m also more readily familiar with VII and VIII than the other games which I lack the qualifications of.

ASOIAF forums tend to psychoanalyze characters a lot actually. That's all they talk about and as an extension of the novel's most prevalent wiki they're the only authoritative community, even GRRM is in touch and emails their administrators periodically to remember say eye colours on minor characters.

The entire series focuses solely on believable trials and tribulations of the human heart, the idea that good and evil are merely an inseparable yin/yang that fight within each and every person.

They bitched a lot when Littlefinger threatened Cersei in the show because in A Song of Ice and Fire LF would sooner chop his own balls off before indulging and acting upon such a mind boggling miscarriage of logic and self preservation.

TV exclusive forums suck. I'm assuming you meant the bookfags. Game of Thrones is a shitty name btw. Reminds me of American Kirby Is Hardcore because the cooler title just doesn't get laymen hard.

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1yf0gGqSQYF KHALEESI!!

I bet you're going to love the show when they get to Feast and Dance material if you've not been reading, oh boy.

Oh I also have to say I don't really care about how well a game supposedly communicates it's mythology. All that matters to me in a story is it's relevance to real life (which is why I like Xenogears and FFT and FFVII a lot more than VIII) and believable characters are an oft heralded cornerstone of this approach though far from necessary. I feel FFVIII is a monolithic failure in that regard as it communicates commonly through them without me being the least interested in their existence.

Shadow of the Colossus is the sort of story that can disassociate itself from extortionate character dialogue and still convey thematic immensity.

Also the one I thought was good was the first one, the one by Tres just came off uninteresting upon an initial skim and doesn't invite my scrutiny, but I'll see if I can look at it in detail later.

>after reading a bit more

k. The first isn't great, but you're silly for trying to pin that on the approach they took. IX is a really fun game but it doesn't have the depth necessary to sustain a philosophical autopsy like that. The only reason Tres' one seems more in depth is because FF is often a cluster fuck of autistic shit most players ignore in favour of just having a good time, so IX just provides a more wealthy diatribe on those qualities.

And it doesn't mean you can't write something that'll withstand both types of analysis'.

Don't put IX in the crosshairs here because god I love that game, I just don't think it's the paragon of narrative intricacy.

Squall has a jet thruster on his suit. Rinoa, I believe, used hers up.

I had to look up the script to be sure, and you're right, Squall does indeed have some type of thruster on his suit, because Piet talks about his fuel supply:

Idiot! There's no way he can get back! He's insane! He's gonna run out of fuel and life-support in no time. They're both gonna die.

That's what allows him to reach Rinoa. I had forgotten that. But once he has caught up with her, he says (or rather thinks):

Out of fuel... Low on oxygen... What now? Die in space?

The Ragnarok appears almost immediately afterwards. The chance of them already being on a collision course with the ship, and moving at such a tiny speed differential that it didn't obliterate them on contact, is virtually zero, but now that I think about it... virtually zero is not the same as zero, so perhaps I ought to forgive the whole scene after all. There are still small parts which are impossible, but they're no bigger than the way the Gardens manage to fly, so I should let those fly too.

I think I just changed my mind mid-post :monster:

So...what's the deal with the "Propagators" on Ragnarok? Are they aliens? Are they from the moon? Are they spies from an invasion force that will attack the world in FFVIII-2?

On that note, both they and the zombie on the train were quite frightening. I love when this series randomly dives into horror.

The game doesn't really say. They are just aliens for the sake of aliens, because hell why not ? :monster:

The game could explain it in that walkthrough guide thing in the menu but tbh i never bothered researching the aliens because they just felt there for the sake of just being there.

Head back in Timber and read what the large TV Screen says. Also lookup faceless Squall on Google images.

Enjoy having no sleep tonight !

do you even lift.

I do 10 macro reps in Starcraft per 30 seconds lol

Hey, about you trying to frame me. An IP check and Skype, if needed, will quickly weed me out as a lovably snide sixteen year old lad with a raspy tenor. I would even politely haggle them to unban this fellow and bait them into posting under a false pretense of mercy so they can unravel the distinction in IP and syntax first hand. However fit your bill is, it's seams will scarcely hold to a growing case for the truth and prove one size too small to keep it concealed.

So. Not the point. You tried to frame me because you don't like being Battletolds for buzzwords truncated from the shit encrusted bowels of 4chins like that one. Not 4chins, I made that so it's awesome. Since banned people are usually angry and I'm angry, the expected response would've fueled your credibility. The thing is you didn't expect the fucking Terminator.

I am sorry if it humiliated you. But the point stands you didn't say anything on topic. And I wish you'd quit with the memes because there's no shortcut to being humorous but do what you will.

One day you'll be old as shit and you'll be shaking the flesh around your wrist like an Asda's bag, lips caved in to cover your lack of teeth and still spoutin' memes. "Do you theenk thith is a mutherfuckin GAEM son!!" Or limp wristed in your chair, palm slumped around your walking stick "2/10. Wood'nt e'hen bang" when a hot girl's on tv.
