Oh I get the hate. He's just still one my favorite characters. I have this tolerance for annoying characters that fandom hates. It's like a sickness. A beautiful, regretless sickness.

1. His Mom got killed
2. He is forced to work with his Mom's "killer"
3. Becomes a l'Cie
4. Separated from father

#2 is my problem with him, anyone could see Snow didn't kill her. He should've been pissed that he had a crappy mom that would leave him. But we've been down this road before.

And I don't think Hope being a kid really has all that much to do with it - I mean, look at Hitsugaya, who is also a white-haired pretty boy kid but was literally the most popular character for a while (at least in Japan, I suspect he isn't as popular with Western audiences but he still seems for the most part to be liked). Ofc, their characters are totally different - but I guess that's kind of my point.

Isn't Hitsugaya a couple of centuries old? And a general whereas Hope has always been depicted as a young, naive kid that got caught up in the mess.

Although yeah, a lot of people just don't like Hope. I feel that it is justified because his problems are a larger part of having a terrible reaction to being doomed and hunted down- but that doesn't mean people are going to like him being on screen.

Ah, I understand. If a character is unlikeable, people are going to just not like them regardless.

Interestingly enough a part of me feels like that none of the characters are suppose to be inherently likeable in the beginning. Vanille is shrilly and girly, Lightning is cool but she's also a bitch, Sazh complains, Hope spazzes from rage to depression, and the first thing ever said about Snow is, "first impression of Snow, nothing but talk."

All of these characters are really the worst of their tropes and things get a lot worse before they can get better. A character like Hitsugaya is awesome right from the bat, but there's not suppose to go through any character change because he was created to be cool. Hope was suppose to be an irrational fourteen year old who just couldn't deal with what happened. None of the character dealt with what happened well.

EDIT: Clarifying "worst of their tropes". They start out worst of their tropes and really begin their journey with their worst foot forward. Tough translating as bitchy, young being translated as whiney, happy getting translated as spacey, etc etc. They largely confront and get over it by the end. Hope does not end as the same character as he began.

LOL, true. But without that "conflict" there wouldn't be much back story to tell about Hope. He'd be just a kid who literally got dragged along.

He's a character from Bleach But Splintered pointed out that it's not really a fair comparison anyways as even though he's a kid by Bleach standards he's still ~hundred years old. XD The basic point I was trying to get at though was just that I don't feel age is much of a factor in whether a character is liked or not.
