JD Cullen (Kuja) gives some insight on SE's direction, or lack-thereof

http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=-oqyA2ebE8Y&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3D-oqyA2ebE8Y

Basically, he wasn't told much about his character. He was just given his lines, told to try and sound like the Japanese VA, and was encouraged to sound "breathy and feminine". JD himself said it wasn't what he was used to, but it's what the director wanted and he tried to do as he was told. In all, recording his dialogue took 20 hours.

With such lax and sloppy direction, no wonder some of the VAs are subpar.

Rofl.

Now I get why AC was so blah.

I always had a suspicion that lackluster directing was the root of all this.

Good to know my cynicism was well founded.

Sub-par voice acting is commonplace in video games. Every once in a while there's a director who's really passionate about the source material, but that takes time and money. Especially the former - you can't bang out dubwork fast if you need to take the time to let the actor get a feel for the character. That the dub for Dissidia was handled fast and loose is the norm for the industry - not the exception.

So essentially heads will never roll over this - just hope that your next favorite SE product has a director who gives a shit.

Makes sense.

I've said before, I think it's just insane that Square spends millions of dollars on each project (video game, movie, whatever), then rather than trying to capitalize on an opportunity to market it further in the US, they do a half-assed job translating, voicing, and lip-sync'ing it, making it appear a poor-quality end result.

It's pretty sad when fan translations sound better and make more sense than the 'official' SqEnix translation.

I had a feeling... That's really a shame; I mean, you couldn't give a page or two profile about the character with a picture? :(

Hell, they could have just given him the character profile from the game or the website. Just five minutes and a couple sentences about what Kuja is like could have made a world of difference.

Yeah, shit approach is shit. At the very least put some effort into it - if you spend 20 hours recording it, sure you can spend five minutes on character background and personality and such.

Any other poor VA's in there?

Now Now, tina/terra. We all know we find those mostly DELICIOUS. Or filled with "NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"s enough to make us BISSSSSSOOOOOOOOOON but I frankly enjoyed Kefka, Tidus and Jecht's VA's. the one who is visibly disturbing is Zidane. and Tina/Terra and Kuja's are meh in scale.

Why did Kuja have to be the victim? Why not waste the bad voices on characters like Squall, who no-one cares about anyway?

Well Squall already had a VA because of KH so that's why he is getting the pluses over there. Also Squall was NOMURA'S character who according the world is the gawd of SE even though he only created like 4-5 of their freaking games. O:<

hmmm, ive been playing the "leak" version of Dissidia us, and i've says Kuja's VA is not so bad, its just, he have not give more emotion when he speaks his voice in poetic lines, but i think his voice is appropriate with Kuja, just give more emotion to it

and yeah, i can't stand listening to Zidane's VA, i still love Roma Paku as a VA for Zidane, still haven't listened to terra's voice, might use her later in the game

Kuja's voice sounds like a flaming queen. And while Kuja was effeminate in the Japanese version, he didn't sound like a fairy clown. I hold no fault though with the VA. I figured it was the direction. Because its the director's fault for letting a bad voice performance get accepted.

Thanks Drake for this wonderful insight.

I actually prefer Zidane's voice to Kuja's. Kuja doesn't sound right at all, and like Mako said, it seems to be through no fault of the actor.

I know I'm just reiterating here, but it is pretty absurd that they couldn't give them a freaking paragraph about Kuja. I suppose you COULD say there was nothing stopping the actor from going on wikipedia one night and looking him up, but that sort of thing should be provided for by the director.

It certainly does make sense however that, in my opinion, Cecil, Golbez, Cloud, Sephiroth, Tidus and Jecht have some of the better performances, since all of those actors actually know their characters.

Knowing that there was such shitty direction, you really gotta give Wittenberg props for nailing Kefka anyway.

yeah the director should direct how his actor will act (even it is only in dubbing) and i also share your sentiments how some of the VA are bad, it only annoys me when Zidane say in his final blow in his trance mode, lol

maybe i'll edit my copy of the game and paste the jap audio with the us release, lol

You wouldn't really need to know what the director told them to do because obviously, even if they aren't a terribly bad voice actor, either the casting was just handled wrongly or the direction these actors got were not what they needed to be.

I'm not surprised to hear this and it only reinforces why I usually hate English voice acting.

I agree with you on the firs part but whether or not a dub is good depends mostly on which language you first heard the show in. Granted, there are some exceptions, but for the most part, if you watched the show subbed first, you won't like the dub.

When I can, I download dual-audios and choose whichever I like more. Like in the case of Shana, where I immediately stuck to the dub.

Or Cowboy Bebop. While I may be prejudiced here since the dub is so hailed, I did check out both voices and had to agree. The dub is superior. But I think a major part of the reason is that in my opinion the japanese audio sucks. The dub isn't just better, the japanese voice are fucking crap in my opinion. Same goes for Ghost In The Shell. I had dual audio but the English track had some extremely shitty sound quality (like someone talking too close to his microphone, that effect I mean) and I still watched it with that track because I think it's better.

I've watched Baccano in japanese, but the dub seems great to me. Death Note is another case where I watched the japanese audio first but like certain dub voices more. Unfortunately, I can't remember which they were. I only remember that Ryuk was better in the dub.

With Haruhi, it changed over time, first I totally preferred the dub, but later I found some japanese voices better. It's pretty much equal now. I find Haruhis, Asakuras and Mikuru's voices to be better in japanese while Koizumi, Tsuruya and the computer club leader are better in English. With Kyon and Yuki, I'm a bit torn. Both VA's for Kyon do an excellent job yet make Kyon sound a lot different. I think I'd go with Crispin Freeman though, just because his voice is sexy and Kyon is sexy.

With Yuki, it's like.. The japanese voice sounds a lot better but is mostly just a faint voice. The english voice has a strong monotone. That makes it sound a lot less "beautiful", but it actually fits because she's supposed to talk in a monotone. In that case, I lean more towards the japanese one though, simply because aesthetically pleasing.

Other than that, the wording of the dub is a lot better. Sentences are formulated in a waaay more awesome way than what I read from the subtitles. "No way!" - "Way."

There's enough stuff that doesn't even have a dub and I don't have to bother with this.
I do feel sorry for tthe voice actor, but I am liking the dub of dissidia.
.*sigh* so much text even though I'm extremely tired.. Good night.

I don't like the Japanese for Gundam Wing at all. When I watch an anime I try to listen to both at the beginning and decide which one I prefer. I tend to give the dub a bit of a preference because I prefer to be able to just listen to it. But there are absolutely shows that its just worth it to watch it subtitled.

I think I also tend to give the English more leeway because the purists that will only watch something in Japanese get on my nerves.

I actually have to disagree with you right here.

Every time I hear that kind of outrageous claim, I usually tend to roll my eyes and bust out the examples, so bear with me. There are a few anime series I would rather listen to in English than their Japanese counterpart, even though I heard the latter first (generally, I will start out with raw/subs because the Japanese just do it better). For instance:

Fullmetal Alchemist - Sure, the Japanese voice actors are good, but I much prefer the dub in this case. I don't know too many people who've bashed the English adaptation. Vic Mignogna is amazing as Ed, plain and simple. The rest of the case, Aaron Dismuke, Cailtin, Travis, Sonny Strait, they were all absolutely wonderful.

Ghost in the Shell (movie)/Stand Alone Complex - Again, not bad Japanese voice acting, which I heard first, but I'd still rather listen to it in English. I think the actors they picked here were selected carefully and they did a great job on the direction.

Welcome to the NHK - Chris Patton is amazing as Sato in this series. And equally so is Greg Ayres as Yamazaki. They're just did a way better job of making the characters fun to listen to than the Japanese voice actors did (although I have to say that it's really a toss up between Ayres and Sakaguchi for Yamazaki. They both did a pretty good job).

There are a few instances where I can honestly say I prefer dub over sub after hearing the latter first, so making that kind of claim is very inconsistent and biased, imo. You like what sounds good and, honestly, the casting for some of the characters here in the English version of Dissidia just really, really sucked (I'm not saying all of them, because that's not true either. There were some really good voice actors here as well).

Like I said, I don't know if it was a matter of wrongful casting, bad direction, lack of talent or all three, but I likes what I likes and that's all there is to it.

This is bullshit, and it never fails to amuse me how people always pull out this old nugget.
