[From GameFaqs] Why Serious topic: Why aren't there any 'thick' Final Fantasy females..?

Ah, yes, aging population. Well, its the consequence of a growing population, especially if we want to cut down the population. You are going to eventually get in a position where there is a large minority of old age pensioners, which the rest of society must support.

This is only an issue for most places if most of the population either refuses to have kids or refuses to let foreigners in to achieve citizenship. See: Japan

But on topic, funnily enough, I agree with the second part of what you said to a degree. It's really weird how if you're over 30 in a Japanese RPG you're automatically an OLD FOGEY I'M SO OLD BETTER LET THESE YOUNG'INS TAKE OVER WHERE'S MY CANE

I, rather jokingly, consider the high suicide rate in Japan related to literally ALL of their media enforcing the fact that you can only do things of importance (like save the world) during your teenage years, and after that you're over the hill.

As I said, jokingly, but sometimes I wonder if there's anything to it...

I agree with you, Looney, that Amarant does appear to be "coded" with a couple ethnic features, but it's difficult to be sure of anything with that game, even among characters who have familiar skin tones. :monster:

On the subject of whether Japan goes with the same body types over and over because it's something they like or because they also think that Westerners prefer it, I imagine it's a bit of both.

By the way, ForceStealer, you make an interesting observation concerning everything falling to teenagers in Japanese media. That theme originally came out of a post-World War II sense that the old fuck up things for the young and old alike, and that the younger generations were stuck to fix their predecessors' mistakes.

It does make me wonder how it might now be viewed by the younger citizens who have arisen out of a different time.

I'd say the suicide rate is due to how stressful their work life is over there. Japan may seem like heaven to some of you folk, but I certainly wouldn't want to live there =P.

I "lived" there for 4 months, and I know; I have no desire to ever work there. But still, I wouldn't be too surprised if the absolute void of heroes over 20 entered into it.

(That was actually part of the reason why I was so drawn to FF7's story as compared to others. the hero is 21! That's still by no means old, but normally people that age are battle-aged veterans eager to pass on the torch)

It really is quite boggling that FFVII has one of the oldest casts. FFX, of course, has some over-the-hill peeps as well, with Auron stacking in as a living zombie (haha puns) at a whopping 35.

Edea seems rather voluptuous.

sorceressedea.jpg

Not too bad, but still too skinny in my opinion.

Don't forget Lani also.

Ah, right. I did forget her.

You know what, I'm even going to go ahead and count Edge from FFIV.

So that's 19 non-caucasian characters, with 13 playable (playables marked in the list below with an asterisk):

Barret*
Buddy
Donna
Edge*
Gekkou*
General Leo
Izayoi*
Kiros*
Lani
Luna*
Raijin
Rude
Sazh*
Tseng
Tsukinowa*
Ursula*
Yang*
Yuffie*
Zangetsu*

Jeez, that's still pretty sad.

You know Square is catering to a Japanese market when they have a futanari main character in one of their games before they have major non-white/non-asian/thick female/older etc. representation :monster:

I thought most of the cast of FFX were Asian, though admittedly it was confusing at times, comparing official art (where they look Caucasian) to in-game FMVs (where they look Asian).

Yuna looked pretty white to me. When I first saw her, I felt a little Jennifer Aniston vibe going on :s

Tidus looked a little Hawaiian, not quite Caucasian and not really Asian to me. I agree with Animexcel on Yuna.

Also Lulu and Auron seemed far from Asian while Wakka looks Jamaican with lighter skin.

It was more of an observation than a point, guys. :awesome: Seriously, if it had been a serious point, I'd be more than just rolling my eyes right now.
Nice to see I'm helping to keep Patrick Stewart in work. :awesome:
I thought you meant "thick" as in stupid. I think that's also a question though, where's all the dumb blondes?
That was my first thought, too. :monster: I would say great minds think alike, but there's no need for actionable slander. But like I said: "what about Rikku"? Or, Hell, Tedious Tidus?

Thinking about this seriously, though, there does seem to be a predisposition for Japanese girls to develop more to this sort of body type. How much of this is cultural and how much is genetic is debateable. So, as much as some people may say the series is "Westernised", the fact is, the art design is done in Japan, and any motion capture models are likely to be Japanese.

We may as well say how most FF male characters are likewise slim, and (in most cases) fairly effeminate in appearance. It’s only really been the more recent FF games that have had more classically masculine-looking males in (Angeal in Crisis Core, Vossler, Basch, Balthier and Gabranth in XII). True, VII had Barret, VIII had Raijin and Ward, IX had Steiner, and X had Auron, Wakka and, um, (gah, OK, my argument’s hit a stumbling block…) Donna’s guardian. That guy. However, most of these guys were used as comic relief characters, even when some of them had well-developed backstories (yes, Barret lost his village and family, and Wakka lost his brother, but most scenes not dealing with these incidents will usually have them being used to lift the mood).

…Of course, there’s also the fact that at the end of the day… the games still sell. Many models are skinnier than the characters, so they’re not obscenely underweight. While there are many female role-models (actresses, singers, models, etc.) with more body definition out there, it’s the flimsier stature that gets more attention. I have considered whether it might be an animation problem, i.e., that it would take more work to properly animate the extra muscle tone, subcutaneous fat, etc., but as there are some fairly well-muscled guys in there, this is clearly not the case.

It’s a pity we can’t have a girl in between waif and Queen Brahne, though. :-/

Actually, on ethnicity, I’m just playing FFXII through now, and I didn’t get why Vaan stared at Fran at first. It can’t be cos she’s a Viera, I’ve come across half a dozen or so in Rabanastre. Maybe he’s actually thinking “Holy shit, a black girl!” :monster:

You call that black? He was probably staring because she's hot. *shrug*

I find it a little hard to believe that the same thing appeals to the whole of the Japanese market. You would think they'd offer some differentiation in order to draw in a variety of crowds. I mean really, I find it hard to believe that every Japanese person prefers the exact same body type. There has to be a good portion that appreciates something different.

...also I wouldn't mind them adding in some more facial imperfections. Yes Square, your characters are all immaculate angels who share the same, perfectly symmetrical facial structure. Though that rant sort of belongs in a seperate topic :monster:

I think a pregnant woman should be a playable character. I think a eunuch should be a playable character. I think a person with an intellectual disability should be a playable character.

To return to the earlier point about the Japanese being resistant to foreign influence - I'm not saying it's without truth, since I know very little about the Japanese, but some of the things I do know about them suggest otherwise. The way they have abandoned their traditional dress in favour of western clothing for day to day living. The fact that traditional Japanese words have fallen out of use and been replaced by English words; I mean really basic things like 'taberu' for table and 'mirku' for milk. The fact that they're the biggest nation of baseball players outside of North America. Their love of western classical music and the great performers they produce. [Uematsu's music is clearly western in tone and inspiration]. Their adoration of Tom Cruise, David Beckham, etc... Their passion for 'Anne of Green Gables'. (PEI gets overrun with Japanese tourists in the summer). Their love of Shakespeare.
In fact, I always thought that one of the things the Japanese were famous for was absorbing outside influences and improving on them, making their own versions better than the originals. [Toyota, anyone?]

J-pop is crap, it's true, but then so is Europop, with a few honourable exceptions.

But then you look at Japanese demographics and Japanese law. Very homogeneous and xenophobic, more so than Australia, and that says something =P.

Just blame Nomura.

It's a cultural thing fellas. They're meant to look Japanese, not American.

Most asians are naturally thin. This visual concept stems from Nomura's work on AC. Since the film's release, every game has included Nomura's concepts.

I wouldn't say they're naturally thin. I think they simply stay slim because they're diet is far better than the typical western diet health-wise, and exercise regimes in their schooling is apparently pretty full on.
