Mythology?

No, what he's asking is where in the FF7 universe is it stated the planets name is 'Gaia'.

To answer the question, the original game? Nowhere. The closest we see is Gaea's Cliffs on the Northern Continent. I think the Ultimania/translations/interviews/something state Gaia, though.

Yeah, I know about the pamphlet Mako, I wanna know if it's used anywhere besides the pamphet. If the planet has a canon name I would think it would be used more often.

Is it not also used by Nojima when discussing the 10 and 7 link?

Plus. Gaea's cliffs, no?

Other than the pamphlet already mentioned, the only other resource I can think of to use the name is DoC's English website. It was in the little trivia game on there. One question asked what the name of FFVII's planet is.

So that's all I can think of. It must have been what they were going for with "Gaia's Cliffs," and most of us never picked up on it until the pamphlet came along.

Seems to also fit the etymology scheme they've got going on with Minerva, at any rate. Though I wish they had just called her Gaia as well.

Just out of curiosity, when they refer to "the planet" in the Japanese game script of FF7, is that how it translates? Is there any room for other interpretations?

I'm unsure what you mean by other interpretations, but the word the Japanese script uses is "hoshi," meaning "heavenly body." It's usually translated as "star" but can refer to other things.

You answered my question. I was just curious if the Japanese word for when they refer to "the planet" in English could possibly translate to anything else.

I hate the name Gaia. It's overused in games/anime/the world.

I liked the world of FFVII better back when we all thought it was simply called, "Planet." XD

I actually agree with this though I don't really know why exactly. When I first played FF7 I was young and thought of the planet as Earth in some sort of alternate universe future, or something. I think by giving it the name "Gaia" it makes the setting more out of touch with reality or something, and I can more easily substitute "nameless planet" with "Earth in the not so distant future" in my brain. It's a rather silly thing tbh, I think 10-year old me was just taking the save the environment message a little too far =P

Then again, I'm just probably rationalizing my habit of overthinking things. Though I guess it's a little silly to expect the people of the FF7-verse NOT to give their planet a name.

also: when I hear "Gaia" I immediately think of "the girl from the mystic moon!" and then I get the American dub Escaflowne theme song stuck in my head >:\

"The Planet" is more exotic, while "Gaia" is as tired and done as characters who look like Sephiroth. Still, looneymoon makes a good point that it's only to be expected the inhabitants would name the planet something, and it looks like it was always intended to be Gaia.

I couldn't agree more. It is over used quite a bit in the FF worlds. Planet seems to fit the bill quite nicely. Just for curiosities sake, FF10 had Spira what was it called before Tidus was sent 1000 years into the future. I don't recall it ever being mentioned.

I really agree. I was kind of annoyed that they started calling it Gaia. Calling it "the Planet" was strangely unique. And at the risk of getting too deep here...it's kind of appropriately arrogant and naive (given Shinra's presence) to act like they're on the only planet, at least the only one worth mentioning.

Yeah I liked it more as simply "The Planet"... but I'm that way with a lot of things. I grew up playing the Square RPGs in the 90s, and now all these retranslations/remakes are causing new names/renames to things. Most of the time I just think of it in its original form that I grew up with, only because I'm used to it, and that's what I remember.

And Gaia or not, I still think it's fun to think of FFVII as almost an alternate reality. It's only slightly futuristic, but yet other aspects put it in the past compared to present-day Earth.

Yeah, pretty much what I was trying to say in my previous post. I'm the same way with the whole Aeris vs Aerith thing. I know what's the canon, I just prefer what I'm used to.

1. Tidus was not sent 1000 years into the future. His Zanarkand was a 'summoned' city and society existing out in the middle of the ocean. Sin didn't time travel, he just boated out.
2. Spira was still Spira, as far as we know.

lol Ryu, beat me to the punch. XD

Either way I always found the idea of the world in FFVII having no name to be hilarious. It was just, "The Planet." You never see this in a story. Worlds always have names. So the idea that this world had none other than a quite true statement of what it is was really, really hilarious.

But alas, that humor is lost forever. :'(

And the weirdest thing was in the Supernova attack, "the planet" was also unnamed, even though it was kind of implied it was Earth due to the other planets in their solar system being the same as ours.
