Because the original Japanese version didn't have the whole solar system destruction thing (it was only a large explosion), and it was only added in the NE version to make the attack look interesting. Then, S-E (sensibly) confirmed the visuals of the attack as an illusion.

It's safe to say that the extended version of Supernova -- the one in the North American version -- was the intended one. Various other things only first showed up there, such as the flashback detailing what happened to Zack, Emerald and Ruby WEAPONs, etc.

This version of Supernova is also featured in the Ultimania Omega.

The animation completely retarded and contradictory though. It doesn't really make sense. Okay, I'll buy that it's the INTENDED one, but the visuals themselves are an illusion in the context of the game.

Of course. It's just a cool animation for an attack -- and appropriate given all the imagery and symbolism associated with Sephiroth there.

Illusion or not, the planet the characters are presumably standing on lacks a name within the animation. The fact still stands.

She's saying that while all the other planets in Supernova have names, the planet Gaia has none. Which is strange.

But yeah. I think Dissidia's depiction of Sephiroth's "Supernova" ability is more in tune of what it really is. It's a badass energy blast that's caused by the focusing of Sephiroth's energy in his sword. He basically blows you up with the power of a supernova. :monster:

And really, almost every villain since Sephiroth has had one skill that shows the universe trembling from their power. Hell, look at Ultimecia's "Great Attractor" attack. And Jecht's "Ultimate Jecht Shot" as the Final Aeon.

Yeah, I'm not saying that the ability of smacking around planets like cueballs is stupid in itself. It's just typical JRPG goodness, even if it doesn't make much sense. The thing is, the rather nonsensical NE Supernova animation, while cool, DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

It's not really a big deal though, since S-E really did try to clarify and rectify it in retrospect. It's okay.

It messes with my suspension of disbelief seeing someone (repeatedly) using an ability that smacks around planetary bodies like cue balls and human beings (repeatedly) surviving attacks like that. I mean it's OKAY, but does it make sense? No, not really. But it's a (japanese) video game so whatever I guess.

Unless you meant

Uh...how does it make sense? An attack that makes donuts and erases planets that don't even exist in FF7's universe that can be used over and over again doesn't make sense. It being an illusion is the only way it could possibly be handwaved.

Doubtful. It's just a really powerful blast of energy that he gets all theatrical about, of course I realize you weren't being serious.

Of course it's an illusion. Basically the attack causes the sun to explode, where it engulfs and obliterates both Mercury and Venus. Then the sun continues to grow until it's at the toes of your characters. If that was real, they'd all be incinerated because... it's the freakin' sun. :P

I do believe it's possibly the winner for "most over the top animation for a summon/magic spell" though.

A supernova level of explosion/energy would evaporate Sefiros, Avalanche, hell the goddamn planet.

Dude, this is a game where one guy has an attack animation that has him remotely hijack a satellite with a giant laser -- on a world that doesn't have any satellites in orbit.

It's just a flashy attack. It's gameplay. Don't worry about it.

Without a doubt.

It's like Bahamut NEO's attack, where it raises a piece of land up and it incinerates the land, but after the attack, there isn't a big hole in the battle ground.

I always liked summoning NEO in weird places where that logically wouldn't work- such as the train bridge in the Corel Mountains, the Train, etc.

That's why I said 'JRPG goodness'. Granted Supernova pushes the envelope quite a bit, but it's whatever.

JRPG goodness at its finest. They have yet to top some of the animation absurdities found in FFVII -- and even if they did, could they be half as endearing?

This is one of the factors that some fans fear might be lost if it's made all srs and realistic-looking. I like all the over-exaggerated expressions/poses/motions, personally.

Doesn't Zodiark's strongest attack in FFXII press the reset button on the universe or something?

Zodiark's attack is the literal rending of time and space around the target, with the powers of darkness. He's the keeper of precepts, the sole force that fashions and enforces the laws of the universe, and passes judgment in place of the gods.

So many names
I always kinda figured that, what with the space program sucking so much and the only telescope of any significance seen in the Compilation being Bugenhagen's, knowledge of any other planets that might exist is probably limited outside of Cosmo Canyon and the Study of Planet Life. That being said, you don't really need names for the different planets, cause the only one people in general know anything about is Gaia. Use of the name falls out of practice, etc. No, it doesn't make perfect sense, but its something to explain why we never heard this name in any game, film, or book in the Compilation, only in other materials by the creators.
