the tv show is nice for visualizing the scenes but nothing beats the fleshed out nature of the book

plus the fact that the tv show tends to oversimplify or gloss over or in the case of dany, completely flub the character arc entirely

don't get me wrong i still love me some tv!dany but they really sent some wrong messages especially in s1

^ Oh yes.
When I read the part about Dany's wedding I was all 'wtf?! whatever caused them to change that to that horrible scene in the show?' I mean I know she was scared and vulnerable and they needed to contrast the courage she finds later, but... wat. I guess she found her courage a bit too early for the producers X)

it just made her look like she was delusional about her enslavement/relationship with drogo. i saw s1 before i read the book, and the show just gave me the impression she was this abused girl who couldn't wait to hatch her dragons to kill every sorry asshole who hurt her, and on top of that made it look like she fell in love with her rapist.

the reality in the book was...quite different.

seriously, what the hell show writers. (and don't get me started on doreah, i'll fucking FLIP)

Fangu

Ah yes that too. Her faith was really quite the opposite than in the books, wasn't it. Books: Stays loyal and dies of illness. Show: Betrays Dany. I don't get why they felt they had to part Dany with the dragons at all. Guess they needed make up some excitement, as Dany's journey at that point is kinda spiritual and hard to film. And maybe to portray how attached Dany is to her dragons.

Martin himself has made (pilot) tv shows himself so I guess he's always on board, but still. It's curious.

I'm glad for the changes they did to Robb's storyline though. We must be allowed to squee once in a while. X)

i just felt cheated because at first i was glad they were expanding on the dany/doreah friendship. there's really not a whole lot of genuine friendships or outstanding loyalty so for a moment it was like oh!! something nice. but then it wasn't.

i actually thought they were going to improve upon the way the book treated dany's sexuality from something almost cheap (she had to get off!! hahah!!) to at least meaningful in the way she treated the handmaidens that followed her across the fucking red waste

but then just to develop this sweet friendship and then HAHAH A NO BETRAYAL!! WHO CARES IF IT MAKES NO SENSE!!! WHAT A TWEEEST! blarrrgh.

i am glad they showed more robb in s2 though. and the cersei/tyrion/sansa trio stole the goddamn show in king's landing, bless them. i'm so stoked for more of that.

Yeah the showrunners have done some pretty questionable things. I can sort of understand why they didn't think they could do Drogo and Dany's relationship the way it was done in the book in the time allotted, but I really don't like the way they changed it. I'm not sure what could have been done to make it believable without being heinous, but that's one change that certainly wasn't for the better. I also don't get what the point of giving Doreah an expanded role was if they were just going to write her off like that a season later. Maybe the whole point is that there aren't many genuine friendships in the setting. I dunno. It still seems like a pointless change.

That said, I think the changes to Jaime's character do make a lot of sense. Non-readers aren't going to have the advantage of his inner monologue, so the shocking fact of reading his vantage point in A Storm of Swords and coming to find out that
he's really not that bad a guy
can't really translate well to the screen, meaning that
his forthcoming heel face turn would make little to no sense
. So I think that change is well called for, at least.

I don't like the major changes they've made, neither in Dany's or Robb's storyline (from the top of my head). I mean, in Robb's case, in the books,
both to the reader and his mom, he suddenly goes "LOLZ LOKK i has a waifu and she's rather common LoL ^_^" without said wife being fleshed out much. This WTF could've been translated quite well to the series (and would've taken less time to shoot / visualize, too, lol), but I guess WTFs on TV are not done or something.

Next season needs moar hodor.

You know nothing Arya Stark, :monster:

Needles is waiting for you. :monster:

I know it most likely isn't going to happen but here's something I wish they change in the t.v. show from the book:
Please don't kill off Ygritte, she's way too awesome. This is gonna be me when she dies:

I never really grew that attached to her tbh. Well, in the books anyway. I still haven't watched to that point in the series.

I got a little bit attached but then Jon ran off anyway and she only had a couple of chapters worth of character development.
In terms of coverage she really just felt like a plot device for Jon to man up and
take responsibility for the Night's Watch
.

When you guys spoiler tag, can you put in which book it's a spoiler from? I'm scared to click on any of the spoiler tags as I'm only about 1/3 into Book 3 :monster:

Although I know it's not easy to do as some of you are probably reading the Wikis or summaries and have no idea which book stuff happens in.

I guess I just have to stay away :( I just hate having stuff spoiled. The moment you have when you read something and go OMG AAAAAA is just so wonderful. I had one of those moments earlier today and it is. so. awesome. I read the back cover of Book 5 when we bought it at the bookstore in KL btw and I raeged so bad. HUGE MASSIVE SPOILER in the very first sentence. So right now I'm trying to avoid anything spoilerish.

You probably shouldn't read my spoilers yet, :monster:. Definitely don't read Carlie's either. Not sure about everyone else's.

Like Aaron said, Fangu do not read my spoiler.

This are spoilers from book 3 I think:
I don't know much about book Ygritte but t.v. series Ygritte is fantastic, she's so fucking funny, snarky and awesome and her banter with Jon is pure gold, I also loved them as a couple, they're chemistry is great and I'll admit I'm a sucker for the dating catwoman types of relationships. Also I'm dying to see the cave scene coming up in season 3 ok I'll admit it that's mostly because I want to see Jon naked :monster:

Less than an hour before the premiere, yay. :excited:

Not that there was ever any doubt that it would be, but GoT has officially been renewed for its fourth season. And there was much rejoicing.

Yeah, I just saw it on Digital Spy. :awesome:

Did anyone see the Peter Dinklage April Fools article? Just called it straight away, especially when they said they had a replacement, Warwick Davis. There'd be all hell let loose if there was no more of the Tyrion we love and a new, shitter one.

Wait what, Aristan Whitebeard is Ser Barristan?????!!!

Thanks for the fucking spoiler, TV show :(

I'm not watching anything until I've finished Book 3 now :(

Just finished watching the first episode and I'm glad to see it finally back on air. Quite forgot there are a lot of story/character arcs, but I suppose I'll get used to it again soon. I only seemed interested in Dany tonight. I kept looking at how long the episode had been running and wondered when she'd be popping up.

Cutting off the slave soldier's nipple was a little ... unnecessary.

Just saw it too, :monster:.

First disappoint: sound fail, PS3 media server is shit. Playing directly from hard drive worked though.
Second disappoint: Another battle skipped. Lame.

Rest of the episode was pretty good though, :monster:. I should turn off the IRC though, I spoiled Fangu with something and I didn't actually pay much attention, lol.

Yeah, the episode end is definitely a spoiler, but then, it'd be kinda difficult to keep it hidden with a face added to it, :monster:.

Creepy kid is creepy.

The Peter Dinklage was obviously fake though I did find one of the comments that said "You know how I know this is fake? The article says The Big Bang Theory is a great show." very funny.

Nah you didn't, it was already spoiled for me as I'd already watched the ep :P

If it was something else then I luckily missed it, lol

That's pretty much what happens in the book too, that scene is very shortened compared to how it is in the book, it's looong. What they fail to explain is that the Unsullied drink a special drink that doesn't let them feel any pain. But I guess they left that part out as it would make them seem less extremely obedient, which is what the Unsullied are; obedient to death.

why did they change the "kill the dog" training? the baby thing made less sense to me

it's crueler to kill something you have an attachment to

i understand the show changing certain things but there's literally no reason for this one

Well the baby thing is in it as well, but I agree the dog thing is preferable, because like they (foolishly) added in the dialogue between Dany and Ser Jorah in the show, "8000 babies!" A lot of humans disappearing in that city. It's a flaw in the babies thing they for some reason decide to point out? Weird.
