Whereas Neil Blomkamp
is a little bit of a newer director, I still really enjoyed
Elysium, though it wasn't as good as
District 9 (but that's a pretty high mark to achieve again).
On topic of
Gravity's director though, Alfonso Cuarón also directed
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which is the highest rated Potter film (aside from
Deathly Hallows Part 2) as well as writing/directing
Y Tu Mamá También which is another quite well-received film, and his production company was involved with
Pan's Labyrinth, so I wouldn't say he, "just got lucky" so much as he actually knows what he's doing.
Additionally, I'd say that this is the type of story that's MUCH more well suited to a visual format than text format. Depending on how nice the theater is, you can quite distinctly get the feeling of vertigo from the trailer, which is a type of sensation that can only be delivered in a visual format.
That being said, no knows if it'll be good, but it's got quite a good number of things going for it.
