Guide to breeding a stable full of "Perfect" Chocobos by DynamixDJ
V1.00: July 2017
V2.00: August 2017
V2.01: October 2018

Throughout this guide, you will be maxing out all stats for all five colours
of Chocobos, without using hacks. We will exploit the broken RNG mechanics to
breed precisely 12 times, and by the end, we will have a set of Chocobos that
all share the following stats:

MDash = 6000 (Top Sprint = 176 KPH) (MDash / 34 = KPH)
MRun = 5900 (Normal Running Speed = 173 KPH) (MRun / 34 = KPH)
Stamina = 9999 (Stamina = 999) (Stamina / 10 = Stamina)
Intelligence = 100
Coop = 100
Acceleration
= 80
Type
= Wonderful
Personality
= 2 (Dashing while in the lobby screen at the races).

Note that this is the 2nd version of this guide. In the first version, none
of the Chocobos was personality 2 (dashing in the lobby screen), and most of
them were "Great". In version two, I've managed to get them all Wonderful, all
Personality 2, and also using fewer Greens (although one more breed was
required).

Additionally, we do not need to race using this method (unlike version one),
which means you can start and finish this if you wish as soon as you obtain
the Highwind (before the Gold Saucer reopens). The only downside to this is
the fact that you won't be able to check your stats as you go along, which is
a necessary step, so I suggest only getting to step 12 until the Gold Saucer
opens. When you test your Chocobos in the races to confirm stats, be sure
not to race them as it will affect the RNG dice roll.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO ACQUIRE:

- All 6 stables purchased (and empty)
- 1 x Captured Wonderful Chocobo in the pen (Icicle Area alongside 1 or 2 Jumping)
- 1 x Captured Great Chocobos in the pen (Mideel alongside 1 or 2 Spiral)
- 1 x Captured Chocobo of any type in the pen
- 99 Sylkis Greens in inventory (287 needed in total). Bought from the Chocobo Sage
- 5 Reagan Greens. Bought from the Chocobo Sage
- 99 Mimett Greens in inventory (103 needed in total). Bought from Chocobo Billy
- 4 Tantal Greens. Bought from Chocobo Billy
- 25 Krakka Greens. Bought from Chocobo Billy
- 3 Carob Nuts. Stolen from Vlakorados near Bone Village
- 9 Zeio Nuts. Stolen from the Goblins on Goblin Island
- 976,000 reserve gil for the remaining Greens

In total, you'll need 1,611,850 gil to cover the cost of all the Greens. One
x Mastered All sells for 1,400,000 (as if you didn't already know)!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Unlike most other areas in FFVII, the RNG marker does not increment when
standing in the barn area, which means the "randomness" isn't actually
random, and the internal RNG can be manipulated to produce a Chocobo with
predetermined results.

When you perform a hard reset, the RNG Marker will reset to 0. The highest
value it can reach is 255, after which it will reset back to 0 again. This
means that there are 256 different possible outcomes when breeding two
specific Chocobos, and the purpose of this guide is to pinpoint the RNG
value needed to produce the "best" possible outcome for each stage of
the breeding process.

We can perform set actions which increase the RNG by a determined value:

Entering the Pen Area ------ +2
Feeding Krakka Greens ----- +1
Feeding Tantal Greens ----- +3
Feeding Reagan Greens ---- +6
Feeding Sylkis Greens ------ +7

Other greens also affect the RNG; however, the above list cites only the ones
that we will be using. Releasing a Chocobo does not affect the RNG, although
moving and breeding do, and the amount that the RNG increases by varies
depending on certain factors (primarily the RNG value at the time of
breeding/moving).

YOU MUST perform a hard reset (as opposed to a soft reset) when instructed to
do so, which means completely resetting your PS1 (as opposed to holding the
shoulder buttons + start + select), or, closing down the app you are using
and rebooting it. This way the RNG will reset to 0 each time.

Battling on the World Map will not affect the field RNG, nor will purchasing
Greens from Billy. It is important to note, however, that you must not linger
around in the Pen area (where you store your caught Chocobos); after roughly
4 seconds or so, the RNG will begin to advance by two every 2 seconds. ALWAYS
run into the stables as quickly as you can from the World Map (you do have a
bit of leeway; it doesn't need to be a perfect sprint, just don't dilly-
dally).

Lastly, the stats we are focusing on maxing are MDash and MRun, as these are
the only stats you can boost via Chocobo breeding. All other stats are easy
to max out. For more info on Chocobo stats, visit this topic.

So, you have all the items as listed above, and you're ready to go?
Excellent. Make a fresh save outside the Chocobo Farm and let's go!

MOVING CHOCOBOS

You should have a Wonderful, Great and "spare" Chocobo of any type waiting in
the pen area. It is important to note that you must have an empty barn at
this point, as the stable positions do matter. You must follow these
instructions exactly, i.e. when instructed to release a Chocobo, make sure to
do so. Any deviation from these steps will likely cause inconsistent results.

Also, I shall be instructing you on how to name your Chocobos for the sake of
reference. Once we get to the final breeds, you'll be free to label them as
you wish.

1 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
2 -- Move the Chocobo of any type in (will be female, call this "Choco"). RNG @ 014
3 -- Feed "Choco" 21 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 161
4 -- @ 161 Move the Wonderful Chocobo (will be female, Call "WF"). RNG @ 173
5 -- Release "Choco". RNG @ 173
6 -- Feed "WF" 3 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 194
7 -- Feed "WF" 2 Krakka Greens. RNG @ 196
8 -- @ 196 Move the Great Chocobo (male - "GM"). RNG @ 208

Before doing anything else, we'll need to max out Acceleration using Mimett
Greens. Buying Greens from Chocobo Billy will not have any effect on the RNG.
Make sure to continue without having left the screen, with the RNG still @
208.

9 -- Feed "WF" 33 Mimett Greens. RNG @ 051
10 -- Buy 4 Mimmet Greens, then feed "GM" 70 Mimett Greens. RNG @ 005

Note that when feeding Mimett Greens you have a 75% chance it'll increase
Acceleration by 0, and a 25% chance it'll increase it by 1, which is why we
need to feed them so many. Now to quickly max Dash and Run. Carrying on from
RNG @ 005:

11 -- Feed "WF" 1 Sylkis Green. RNG @ 012
12 -- Feed "GM" 1 Sylkis Green. RNG @ 019

Here are our current stats:

"WF":
MDash = 4011, MRun = 3811, Stam = 3814, INT = 59, Acc = 80, Coop = 84, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 117 KPH | Normal Speed = 112 KPH | Stamina = 381

"GM":
MDash = 3554, MRun = 3254, Stam = 3041, INT = 51, Acc = 80, Coop = 100, (P1)
Sprint Speed = 104 KPH | Normal Speed = 95 KPH | Stamina = 304

Now it's time to check your stats at the races to make sure they match up
(you won't be able to verify your Normal Running Speed, just Sprint Speed and
Stamina). To play it safe, save before heading to the Gold Saucer then reload
your save after verifying your Chocobo's stats. This way you'll keep the race
count at 0 for each Chocobo.

Note that (P1) and (P2) stand for Personality Type - Personality Types 0 and 1
will give a running Chocobo on the lobby screen at the races, and Personality
Type 2 will be sprinting.

MATING CHOCOBOS (1st Gen)

13 -- Save outside the Ranch, hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
14 -- Feed "WF" 10 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 072
15 -- Feed "WF" 2 Krakka Greens. RNG @ 074
16 -- @ 074 Mate two Chocobos selecting "WF" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 086 (Great Male - "GM2")
17 -- Release "GM" in stable 2 (not the newborn "GM2" in stable 3)
18 -- Feed "GM2" 3 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 107

Here are the stats of the newborn Great male:

"GM2":
MDash = 4412, MRun = 4287, Stam = 5188, INT = 82, Acc = 80, Coop = 12, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 129 KPH | Normal Speed = 126 KPH | Stamina = 518

"WF" ----- 10 battles
"GM2" ---- 17 battles

Now run outside and fight 17 battles, then save. Before resetting, check
"GM2"s stats at the races.

Note - You only need to fight 17 battles as a minimum, meaning, you can
fight more if you wish. You are okay to carry on with the story and come back
to breeding later on, as there will be 10 intervals in which you must leave
to battle.

19 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
20 -- Feed "GM2" 18 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 128
21 -- Feed "GM2" 1 Reagan Green. RNG @ 134
22 -- @ 134 Mate two Chocobos selecting "GM2" first using a Carob Nut. RNG @ 147 (Green female - "GNF")
23 -- Feed "GNF" 2 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 161

Here are the stats of the Green female.

"GNF": (Great)
MDash = 5753, MRun = 3149, Stam = 6350, INT = 100, Acc = 80, Coop = 8, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 169 KPH | Normal Speed = 92 KPH | Stamina = 635

"WF" ----- 7 battles
"GM2" ---- 5 battles
"GNF" ---- 17 battles

Now run outside and fight 17 battles, then save. Before resetting, check
"GNF"s stats at the races.

24 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
25 -- Feed "GNF" 11 Sylkis Green. RNG @ 079
26 -- Feed "GNF" 5 Krakka Greens. RNG @ 084
27 -- @ 084 Mate "GNF" and "GM2" using a Carob Nut. RNG @ 095 (Blue male - "Blu M") (it doesn't matter which one you select first)
28 -- Release "GM2". RNG @ 095
29 -- Feed "Blu M" 3 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 116
30 -- Head over to the Chocobo Sage and refill on Sylkis Greens (leave with 99).

Here are the stats of the Blue male:

"Blu M": (Great)
MDash = 5082, MRun = 4715, Stam = 8807, INT = 100, Acc = 80, Coop = 12, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 149 KPH | Normal Speed = 138 KPH | Stamina = 880

"GNF" ---- 3 battles
"Blu M" ---- 9 battles

Now run outside and fight 9 battles, then save. Before resetting, check
"Blu M"s stats at the races.

MATING CHOCOBOS (2nd Gen)

31 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
32 -- Feed "Blu M" 30 Sylkis Green. RNG @ 212
33 -- Feed "Blu M" 1 Krakka Green. RNG @ 213
34 -- @ 213 Mate "Blu M" and "GNF" using a Carob Nut. RNG @ 225 (Black female - "Blk F") (It doesn't matter which one you select first)
35 -- Feed "Blk F" 3 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 246

Here are the stats of the Black female:

"Blk F": (Good)
MDash = 5417, MRun = 5186, Stam = 9505, INT = 100, Acc = 80, Coop = 12, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 159 KPH | Normal Speed = 152 KPH | Stamina = 950

"GNF" ---- 6 battles
"Blu M" ---- 7 battles
"Blk F" ---- 9 battles

Now run outside and fight 9 battles, then save. Before resetting, check
"Blk F"s stats at the races.

36 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
37 -- Feed "Blk F" 6 Sylkis Green. RNG @ 044
38 -- Feed "Blk F" 1 Reagan Green. RNG @ 050
39 -- @ 050 Mate "Blk F" and "Blu M" selecting "Blk F" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 062 (Black male - "Blk M")
40 -- Release "Blk F". RNG @ 062
41 -- Feed "Blk M" 2 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 076

Here are the stats of the Black male:

"Blk M": (Great)
MDash = 5958, MRun = 5834, Stam = 9999, INT = 100, Acc = 80, Coop = 8, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 175 KPH | Normal Speed = 171 KPH | Stamina = 999

"Blu M" ---- 3 battles
"Blk M" ---- 16 battles

Now run outside and fight 16 battles, then save. Before resetting, check
"Blk M"s stats at the races.

MATING CHOCOBOS (3rd Gen)

42 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
43 -- Feed "Blk M" 25 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 177
44 -- Feed "Blk M" 5 Krakka Greens. RNG @ 182
45 -- @182 Mate "Blk M" and "WF" selecting "Blk M" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 194 (Gold male - "GDM")
46 -- Feed "GDM" 1 Sylkis Green. RNG @ 201

Here are the stats of the Gold male:

"GDM": (Great)
MDash = 5013, MRun = 5000, Stam = 9999, INT = 100, Acc = 80, Coop = 4, (P2)

Sprint Speed = 158 KPH | Normal Speed = 129 KPH | Stamina = 999

"WF" ---- 10 battles
"GDF" ---- 13 battles

Now run outside and fight 13 battles, then save. Before resetting, check
"GDF"s stats at the races.

This time when we breed, our Gold will be the keeper, so make sure to name it
correctly (as with all breeds from this point on).

53 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
54 -- Feed "GDF" 6 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 044
55 -- Feed "GDF" 1 Reagan Green. RNG @ 050
56 -- @ 050 Mate "Blk M" and "GDF" selecting "Blk M" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 062 (Gold Male - name it whatever you wish)

Here are the stats of the Gold male:

Gold Male: (Wonderful)
MDash = 6000, MRun = 5900, Stam = 9999, INT = 100, Acc = 80, Coop = 100, (P2)
Sprint Speed = 176 KPH | Normal Speed = 173 KPH | Stamina = 999

"Blk M" ---- 5 battles
Gold M --- 16 battles

Congratulations! You now have a completely maxed out Gold Chocobo!! Now we
must max out the other four Chocobos (so no racing just yet, unless you're
not bothered about the four other birds). Note that they will all have the
same stats as above.

Run outside and fight 5 battles, then save (if you fight more than 5 battles,
keep note of how many additional battles you fought). Before resetting, check
the Gold Male's stats at the races.

MATING CHOCOBOS (Maxing all Stats)

59 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
60 -- Feed the Gold Male 6 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 044
61 -- Feed the Gold Male 1 Reagan Green. RNG @ 050
62 -- @ 050 Mate "Blk M" and "WF" selecting "Blk M" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 062 (Black Male - name it whatever you wish)
63 -- Release "Blk M". RNG @ 062
64 -- Feed the new Black Male 14 Sylkis Greens to begin maxing Coop. RNG @ 160

"WF" ---- 3 battles
Black M ---- 16 battles

Run outside and fight 11 battles, then save. If you fought more than 5
battles earlier, then deduct the number of additional battles you fought from
11. Before resetting, check the Black Male's stats at the races.

65 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
66 -- Feed the Black Male 11 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 079
67 -- Feed the Black Male 5 Krakka Greens. RNG @ 084
68 -- @ 084 Mate the Gold Male and "GNF" selecting the Gold first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 097 (Green Female - name it whatever you wish)
69 -- Release "GNF". RNG @ 097
70 -- Feed the new Green Female 19 Sylkis Greens to begin maxing Coop. RNG @ 230
71 -- Head over to the Chocobo Sage for the last time and refill on Sylkis Greens (leave with 69).

Gold M ---- 6 battles
Green F -- 17 battles

Now run outside and fight 17 battles, then save. Before resetting, check the
Green Female's stats at the races. We won't need to battle any more after this.

72 -- Hard reset and run into the barn (without hanging around in the "Pen" area). RNG @ 002
73 -- Feed the Green Female 6 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 044
74 -- Feed the Green Female 1 Reagan Greens. RNG @ 050
75 -- @ 050 Mate "Blu M" and the Green Female selecting "Blu M" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 062 (Blue Male - name it whatever you wish)
76 -- Release "Blu M". RNG @ 062

For the final mate, we don't need to leave the barn this time. With the RNG
still @ 062:

77 -- Feed the Blue Male 38 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 072
78 -- Feed the Blue Male 4 Tantal Greens. RNG @ 084
79 -- @ 084 Mate "WF" and the Black Male selecting "WF" first using a Zeio Nut. RNG @ 097 (Wonderful Female - name it whatever you wish)
80 -- Release "WF". RNG @ 097
81 -- Feed the new Wonderful Female 25 Sylkis Greens. RNG @ 016

You now have a barn of maxed out Chocobos. Congrats! Now all that's left is
to check Blue Male and Wonderful Female's stats, then race them all to S Class :)

Nice 1 :)

I've been contemplating making Youtube vids for a while now, maybe this would make a good starting video. I could probably explain it all a lot better in a vid.

I also discovered a glitch while trying to dissect the breeding scripts to figure out how the RNG works (I found a few glitches, in fact). It is possible to get a Chocobo who's normal running speed is approximately twice as quick as its sprinting speed. It is fairly funny to watch, and I think that would also make a good vid. It wouldn't take me too long to figure out a method to breeding that Chocobo (similar to above, just in a lot fewer steps). I've documented the glitch in detail here.

Is there any way I can edit my first post? I've updated the strategy since, and I can't find the "Edit Post" button anywhere :(

OK, the guide has been updated now:

- Fixed error regarding incorrect step with releasing a Great Chocobo (Copy and Paste error)
- Revised strategy to make it easier to confirm stats at the races
- Chocobos have been named to make it easier to reference
- A few minor errors corrected regarding stat details
- Formatting update to make the guide prettier.

I know I've said this before, but I will be putting this into a Youtube vid at some point, eventually.

I know this may be off topic slightly, but for the third time I've committed myself to start making Youtube vids of my work, and I'm having problems with recording my gameplay. I'd appreciate some help from anyone with experience in streaming/youtubing FFVII

I've tried various free capture software, and given the fact that my graphics card isn't quite up to scratch, I was getting some framerate lag, but not with all the software. I found that OBS works fine, and the recording quality is acceptable for what I want to do. The problem is, I can record fine in "Game Capture" mode when using the Steam version, however, I'm pretty adamant on using the graphical mods via 7th Heaven, given the fact that it'll bump the quality of my vids.

I'm getting a problem with 1/4 of the bottom screen removed, which seems to be a problem unique to FFVII with mods. There's nothing wrong with my aspect ratio; the whole screen appears when in the menu; battles; World Map, it's just when on the field map that this problem occurs. I'm not the only one to experience this problem. Recording in "Window Capture" and "Display Capture" doesn't work for me.

If anyone's experienced this problem and knows a workaround, I'd be really grateful, if not I'll just have to bite the bullet and get a better graphics card, in which case has anyone got any suggestions on alternative software? I'm determined to get this thing into a youtube vid; I spent £50 on a mic yesterday so I can narrate it, I don't mind spending some more money on software, within reason ofc.

You need to manually select the recording region within OBS, I forget what the command is called and I'm just running out the door so I can't look it up at the minute, but I remember having the same issue and that was how I resolved it. I specifically remember having to hold in shift once the red frame was selected to use a custom aspect ratio.

The problem is occurring because OBS is reading the game region of FFVII correctly and only selecting what "should" be shown on the screen, whereas with the mod more is shown. OBS doesn't know to look for this extra visual information so it gets "cropped".

That'd be great if you could fix it, I've had a look at changing the region settings, but couldn't find how to do it (although I didn't look for very long). I have started capturing the stuff I can do, such as catching Chocobos etc, but I had conceded to the fact that I would just have to capture the field map stuff via Steam. It would be awesome if I could just capture the whole thing via 7th Heaven!

Oh wait I see what you're saying now. you mean recording region as in the aspect ratio, not the region as in Pal/NTSC lol. So I guess what you're saying is it can't be fixed, just worked-around by cropping the ratio. I guess this could work if it weren't for the fact that it chops off some of the Chocobos when viewing them on the black screen. I guess I'll have to record them in Steam. So it looks like it's a choice between having nice looking modded visuals with 1/4 of the screen cropped, or have the full screen with lesser quality visuals.

Unless I just install the graphical mods as standalone mods, without 7H? I'm not sure how if they are all compatible that way, though.

OK I have 2 sources now, 1 x Game Capture mode cropped for recording on field screens, and 1 x Game Capture mode in its original aspect ratio. I guess it means I'll have to take multiple recordings of the same steps, which is looong, but at least I can have my cake and eat it that way.

Thanks for the help Lex!

First of all...thanks for the awesome guide! breeding chocobos was one of my favorite parts in the game [:

I just bought and start the game on Steam (PC), still on "disc 1" but I'm preparing for this part +,+

There's something i don't understand clearly:

"It is important to note, however, that you must not linger
around in the Pen area (where you store your caught Chocobos); after roughly
4 seconds or so, the RNG will begin to advance by two every 2 seconds. ALWAYS
run into the stables as quickly as you can from the World Map (you do have a
bit of leeway; it doesn't need to be a perfect sprint, just don't dilly-
dally). "

When you said "Not linger around in the pen area" did you mean to be -inside the interface window of the stables-? cus literally, you have to be in the pen area the whole time you are feeding and moving the chocobos.

Thanks in advance :D

Sorry for the late reply.

By the "Pen Area" I am referring to the first screen that you see when entering the Chocobo Farm from the World Map - the screen that you see the caught chocobos moving around in the 'pen' prior to moving them into the stables (where you would interact with them to obtain Choco/Mog).

I followed the steps as far as feeding greens exactly how you said, but my wonderful female has a sprint speed of 85 kmh and 477 stamina, and my great male has a sprint speed of 87 kmh and 361 stamina. Did I do something wrong? Do the stats really matter when it comes to chocobo breeding?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, you definitely messed up somewhere, it's likely that the RNG value was off when you moved the chocobos in from the pen area.

Did you run immediately into the stables as advised? If you spent too long in the "pen" area (the screen that you first see when you enter from the World Map) then the RNG marker will advance by two every two seconds or so, and this will throw things off. You need to run directly into the stables without spending any unnecessary time in the outside pen area.

Also, did you make sure that your stables were empty before starting the process? If you had to release a Chocobo beforehand, then you would have needed to do another save and reset to ensure that the RNG is @000 when you begin the whole thing.

Also, be sure that you are doing a hard reset and not a soft reset, as performing a soft reset will not revert the RNG marker back to 000.

And in answer to your question, they do very much matter for this process, even if you are not bothered about stat maxing. The 'Personality Type' will affect which RNG scripting "pool" is executed, so each subsequent breed will be off if the stats do not line up perfectly with the guide.

If you are not bothered about stat maxing, and you just want a quick RNG guide to getting a Gold Chocobo then check out this abbreviated guide
