The remake is rumoured to be using the Unreal Engine 4. I saw a post about it on imgur just now and it looked incredible, so I thought I'd share the source video here.

As one of the imgur comments said, this is probably the time for it to be renamed to "Real Engine", because it looks incredible. Just on a personal level, though, I hope that VII has slightly more exciting gameplay. :monster:

A friend was asking for a source for the use of the UE4 and I found this that you guys quoted from the Squareportal site:

The game is developed in collaboration between Square Enix and Cyberconnect 2 and has been in the works for a while now – about a year and half. Earlier this year, Cyberconnect2 told Famitsu that they are working hard on creating photo-realistic RPG experience with Unreal Engine 4. It’s very likely Final Fantasy VII Remake is running on it too.

Except the Squareportal site now says:

The game is developed in collaboration between Square Enix and Cyberconnect 2 and has been in the works for a while now. Leading the development will be key members from the original project, including producer Yoshinori Kitase, director Tetsuya Nomura and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima.

Is it a glitch and the part about the game maybe using the UE4 was your guess and you put it in the quote part, or did they remove that guess part?

Edit: reading this, yeah, there is little to no doubt FFVII will use UE4.

Edit 2: mmh, I can't find any source but the Squareportal one for that collab? How come?

Actually I'm wondering too - I'm looking through the official press release and they neither mention Cyberconnect 2 nor Unreal Engine.
Need to find an official source for that.

Edit: Yeah it seems those are factoids.

So inevitably at this point, a lot of the things that have been bouncin' around this head of mine for the remake have already been stated in one form or another, so I'll just mention 2 things I've been thinking about, big and small. One is the expansion and full graphical realization of COSMO CANYON. Obviously seeing Midgar has been mentioned alot, and if Midgar is the center of the Shinra-raped, polluted, class-divided, symbol of the Planet's destruction, Cosmo Canyon is its opposite and counterpoint. It's where the team really learns about the "Study of Planet Life", the explanation of the Lifestream (and in essence, the dominant religion in the world of FF7 besides $$$) and the cycle of energy that will be destroyed if things continue the way they are going. It's a very distinctive town, combination of peaceful isolated "Native American" style civilization with the gears, gadgets and "hooziwhatzits" of Bughenhagen's doing. Then there's the drunken Bughes around the place spouting their feelings about the Planet's relation to humans, not to MENTION the history with the Gi Tribe and the highly underappreciated Seto sequence. ANYWAY, sorry I have rambled, but I'm looking forward to seeing this section of the game that always stood out as essential to me in the OG fully realized in the remake.

The other, more vague thing, is that I've been seeing a lot of comments in regards to wanting things explained...I'm all for the re-translation fixing the errors and unintentional anonymity, but please, please, don't pull back the curtain on so much of the ambiguity that, realize it or not, makes FF7 the brilliant game it is (anyone see the director's cut of Donnie Darko??).

I feel like a lot of this ambiguity has already been removed with the Ultimanias and sequels. I agree that the ambiguity of the original game was one of the more appealing things about it, but it's kind of already been destroyed. I don't see any way of putting the genie back in the bottle unless they just retcon everything they've done since the original game came out, which doesn't seem likely.

I agree with the rest of your post though :monster:

You are totally right, they did fill in a lot of blanks (as well as create a bunch of new contradictions by adding stuff) in the compilation. There are still big things that have been, for me blissfully, left alone and strange. One simple example is Jenova. So we come to assume, okay, she works like a virus, mindless instinctive destruction, right? ....But wait, she says that important line to Cloud, that implies intelligence, and there are times you seem to be encountering "her" rather than Sephiroth, so is there something else going on here? WTF IS GOING ON IS IT A HE OR SHE WHAT ARE ITS PLANS DOES IT....

And I like it that way. It adds to the confusion we feel and puts us in the shoes of the characters through that. There are similar things with what Aeris knows/doesn't know (there are times it seems she knows entirely that Cloud's personality isn't his own, or even the entire plot of the game/her death that is about to unfold, and is kind of just following her fate whilst not taking life too seriously...but it's never made clear), the Sephiroth clones and where they all came from, etc etc. There are a few things that are underdeveloped rather than ambiguous that I wouldn't mind seeing expanded (The WEAPONS for example) but I don't want the whole "now-that-I'm-looking-at-it-all-spelled-out-it-seems-really-straightforward-and-skimpy-narrative" thing goin' on

Sadly, most of the ambiguity with Jenova has been removed as well. The creators have explicitly said that Sephiroth is in control and that Jenova is essentially mindless by the time of the events of the game. I liked it more when there was room for interpretation.

Edit: (I wasn't sure how to actually edit my first post, so...) I also think there's some distinction, at least for me, between the "main" parts of a series and its events and related works that expound upon those events. For example, you mentioned the Ultimania, which is probably the biggest culprit as far as "this is what REALLY happened in FF7" goes. I highly enjoyed reading most of the translations and digging further into this universe/characters I love, but I was simultaneously glad a whole lot of it wasn't jammed into the game itself, and I hope that remains the case. I feel like I'm not articulating great rn but I'll work on it!

If I remember correctly, isn't it supposed to be Jenova you encounter in the Cargo ship (according to the Ultimania), thus the "....who are you?" response? Even Jenova's ORIGINAL nature (When it attacked the Cetra) is still something that's left only mildly explained

Everything you encounter that looks like Sephiroth is actually Jenova until you get to the Northern Crater, where it's revealed that Sephiroth was encased in Mako the entire time. At least, that's always been my understanding.

And new members can't ordinarily edit posts. I'll fix it so you can in a moment.

While there's still ambiguity with the things you mentioned, I'm pretty sure we weren't meant to assume Aerith knew she was going to die, as they wanted her death to be sudden and realistic, rather than your typical noble sacrifice. The Sephiroth clones are also established as being the survivors from when Sephiroth burned down Nibelheim. It's possible to add information about things without spelling it out, by making use of subtlety or show, don't tell.

I ask for a bonus level where the original cast can beat the living hell out of Deepground and AC characters Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo because I will find immense pleasure in playing with the classic guys.

Wait, wat? When/where did they confirm that?

I need to replay this game.. I never really figured out who the cloned people were, other than just Sephiroth clones, but assumed they were test tube clones the whole time, not fire zombie townspeople.

Vincent's presence on the Sister Ray, when confronting Hojo, should be mandatory no matter your party setup. Hojo should acknowledge Vincent's presence even if only with one line of dialogue or a light smirk. I feel like the "revenge tone" of the scene is better if Hojo doesn't seem to acknowledge Vincent's rage at all.

Come to think of it... With Cloud, Nanaki and Vincent in your party you have a trinity of "Hojo's old experiments". How to handle Nanaki and Vincent in the scene prior to the battle is a tough one because you don't want the scene too deviate too much from the crisis at hand. Special scenes during the Hojo battles may be the best compromise. I want a scene where Nanaki jumps on top of Hojo and bites off his right eye (possibly even his full right face), as payback for the eye Hojo took from Nanaki. To make Nanaki seem less like a brutal beast we may want this scene to happen during Hojo's second battle form.

1aKksLf.png

I am split on what to do with Nanaki's tattoo in the plot. On the one hand, I very much like the scene in the Ghost Hotel (see spoiler tag), on the other hand it doesn't go anywhere.

Red XIII
“I'm number 13.
Am I going to go mad too?”

Tifa
“I don't know what Hojo did to you,
but you've been all right so far, right?”

Red XIII
“But…”

Tifa
“Be strong.”

Red XIII
“But, I…”

Tifa
“Stop it, Red XIII!
Be strong!”

Cloud
“Tifa?”

Tifa
“You're not the only one who's worried!”

The scene strike emotional chords by accentuating a stress the group is feeling and it adds to the uncomfortable air of uncertainty. But again, it doesn't go anywhere. Maybe, once at the Northern Crater, the party finds a black cloak with the tattoo "13".

Cloud: "This one has the tattoo 13."
Vincent: "We have not seen the same number used twice, so..."
*Nanaki nods*
Nanaki: "It makes sense. If I was one of them, I would have already gone mad. Let's continue on."

There are many factors to weigh here. Some may prefer if the game doesn't address Nanaki's tattoo aside from what is already in the original game, some may see it as tying up a knot. Finding a black cloak with the tattoo 13 would be a light sigh of relief in the plot before the game hits you with all the bad that comes after you have defeated Jenova∙DEATH. Having that contrast might add more than it takes from the narrative.

I think it's in one of the Ultimanias, but I don't remember for sure. Someone who's read them more recently than I have can give a definitive answer.

They're definitely not test tube clones; otherwise they'd look like Sephiroth. The word "clone" in FFVII's translation has an unconventional meaning, which is one of the many things I dislike about the translation.

True, but you never really get a good look at em, eh? What with the cloaks and chibi figures and what not.

Clones, flunkies.. but that's a whole 'nother discussion. :wacky:

I personally think it would've taken away from Sephiroth as a villain to be controlled by Jenova the whole time. I wasn't really affected by the confirmation that Sephiroth was in control the whole time because that's how I saw it to begin with. If Jenova weren't braindead, you'd think it would've been able to break out much sooner or start pulling the same thing it did with the cetra once Shinra started using its cells for experiments.

I think Nanaki's tattoo was meant to be a red herring, hence why it never went anywhere. I liked how they took the time to consider various possibilities, whether they ended up being true or not. It feels more realistic for characters to come to potentially erroneous conclusions rather than always stumbling on the right answer before they know enough to be sure.

UG, this! Throughout my entire childhood I was under the impression that Jenova was running the show and I liked it that way. Now that it's been confirmed that Seph is in control, she's been reduced to, what...some kind of parasite?

ForceStealer

Double Growth
Well, essentially, yes. But, even though Sephiroth is the one in control, he winds up completely taking over her impulse in Advent Children: Suck the Planet dry, and crash it into another one and start over. So it's fair to wonder how much her instincts have fueled his motives, even if she is completely without intent.

I never personally got the impression that Jenova was the true villain, but it was an interesting philosophical question. But I think the essence of the question still exists. She definitely wasn't the true villain acting on agency of her own, but would Sephiroth have any interest in wrecking planets if not for being full of (and, as of AC, entirely composed of) her cells?

I figure an acceptable middle ground is that after Sephiroth ends up in the lifestream with Jenova's severed head, they become a single entity. Sephiroth becomes the mind behind Jenova because her actual mind was pretty much destroyed by what the cetra did and he picked up the remaining instincts that influenced how he went about his plan. In the OG, Sephiroth never specified what he was going to do after absorbing the lifestream but since the planet was going to be destroyed, it makes sense he'd do what Jenova did and find another one. From there, he may have either repeated the process or created a new world as he saw fit.

I have a question...

Where did Ifalna come from? Did she just crawl out from under a rock? Is it ever clearly explained how she met/found Gast?

Starling

It's either implied or stated that she's from Icicle Inn. The Cetra she talks about lived on the northern continent, the forgotten city is right before Icicle Inn and there's a good chance Gast met her there rather than bringing her with him.

And she's *the last* of her kind, right? The *last* Cetra...? I'm just wondering if her parents and grandparents all just sort of...died rather abruptly....?

She looks like a normal person and so does Aeris so...who's to say there aren't other Cetra running around...?
