No it wasn't. Have you watched the A*Team? Even if Barret did look like him, which he doesn't, they are not similar characters except that, yes, they are both black and gruff. *gasp*
Mr. T was as one-dimensional as they come. I make no claims to the literary greatness that is Barret's character, but he's still leaps and bounds over Mr. T.
The only stereotype he fits is the JRPG stereotype of the big, tough character who is actually a softy. A stereotype which has nothing to do with race.

A thread doesn't have to be shat on because people decide to try to derail it and act immature.
