Well that was a waste of time. Two pages of listening to fanboys bitch about how much the game rocks or how much it sucks. What was the point of that, it's not like the article draws any conclusions.
Is FF7 overrated? It is in that it gets more praise and attention than it deserves. But that's not to say it isn't a great game, it is, it's one of my favorites. But FF7 is given undue attention. It's just one game in a vast, vast series, and many of those other games aren't half-bad either. FF7 has two prequels, a sequel, and one and a half movies centering on its universe. FF4 has the DS remake (a new game in and of itself) and the horribly written sequel. FF6 and FF9 have nothing at all.
Now, FF7's appeal wasn't all about flashy graphics, anime-style character and a broken combat system, and for proof of that look no further than the game right after it. FF8's plot was also horribly convoluted, with a broken combat system and good graphics, and it blew chunks. But yeah, at the time FF7 was hailed as groundbreaking for its graphics and it did set the bar higher for games to come. But then, in its own way every FF game has raised the bar. FF3 and FF5 expanded and refined the Job System, FF2 and FF4 gave us an involved plot with deep characters, FF6 combined character customization with character plotlines, etc.
I do love FF7, but I never hailed it as the Holy Grail of gaming. I ultimately find there's little it did that previous FF games didn't do before it - VII just did it in a new way that got a lot of attention. But it gets too much attention. In a series of 12 games, where yes, many of them have enhanced 3D remakes or a sequel of some kind, for one game to get a movie, two prequels and a sequel, it's a bit undue. One of the best RPGs ever? I dunno about that, maybe. One of the best video games ever? I doubt it, there's been some rockers.
Is FF7 overrated? Yes. It is a great game, absolutely, but it's still getting more attention than it deserves, especially when other games in the series get so little.
