IGN: IS FF7 OVERRATED?

I think what Halo did well was help those who weren't already into FPS genre to have an easier starting point. It's not a hard game to get good at, and made me personally a lot more confident to try other FPS games.

It's the fandom I can't stand. I stopped running Halo tournaments at my store because the crowd it would attracted was a bunch of thirteen year olds who thought they were god's gift to gaming. Were talking the kind of kids who need to get off of Live and realize that in the real world if they talk smack like that they are getting their butts kicked.

LOL that crowd will ruin a lot of games for you, that's for sure.

I personally think there are much better games than Halo but I won't discredit others for their opinions about it if they consider it the best FPS. I had someone get angry with me and even told me to "go to hell" because I said that Doom is a better FPS than Halo...people let their egotism get the best of them. What a sad world we live in.

Overrated implies undeserved attention, so of course, my answer is "no." If I thought VII was overrated, I wouldn't be playing the spinoffs, now would I?

And the article lost any ounce of credit it may have had (I skimmed) when it pulled the "FFVI IS TEH BEEST!" card. FFVI is widely considered to be one of the best games, yes, but it has its fair share of problems &, playing it, I don't see how it's superior to other titles, especially not VII. But, that's my opinion. Just like "it's nowhere in the running for one of the best RPGs" is an opinion. And an ill-supported one, at that. Unlike IGN, I am not saying that VI is schite, it just doesn't wow me like VII, X, & Tactics did. THEY are the best games of the series, as far as I'm concerned*.

Now, can someone give me a short version about what this "Thompson" guy was bitching about?

*=Disclaimer: I haven't played that many titles. Outside of the Compilation, the only games I played but didn't list were XII & X-2. The former, I think sucks. The latter, I think was something of a disappointment, but still a fun game.

It just depends on your interpretation on what's overrated and what's not or if it even matters to you but you still enjoy the game for what it is worth and how much of an impact it made on you. I wouldn't count on mainstream sources much like IGN because they discredit a lot of classic games and come up with alot of silly reasons why.

Some people have tastes that exceed the expectations of most, simple as that. It is human nature to nit pick and ridicule something down to the smallest detail if it is outside their realm of desires.

It wasn't perfect but in the world of cinematography and video games that is what you have to expect but it doesn't deserve to be bad mouthed to such a great extent. It's irrational and only sparks needless tension among the people, among the fans of FFVII who consider it the best game because when they consider it as such it is more than just a fly by night game, it is something they hold sacred.

It personally solidified my love for RPGs. I played some RPGs beforehand on the SNES like the infamous Chrono Trigger and FFVI but when FFVII came out it was in another league of it's own. That is not because it was sucessful in the market but because it's sucessful with my own personal enjoyment. When I first saw it back in 97,' I was immediately hooked by the look of it. I played the game countless times from beginning to end. The story is unforgettable and the soundtrack speaks for itself. It has one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming history. It's a timeless classic.

Let me say first, FFVII was not my first RPG. My first RPG was Earthbound for the SNES. That game does indeed hold a special place in my heart, and I enjoy going back and playing through it every so often even after many years. I dearly love that game. But it cannot compare to my love for FFVII.

Everyone decides what the best of everything is for themselves. Everyone has their own personal world, so to speak, concerning these very subjective issues. In my world, Final Fantasy VII is the best RPG (indeed the best video game in general) of all time. I can think of nothing about it I did not enjoy (with the exception of the sometimes faulty/confusing translations). I've welcomed each new addition to the Compilation eagerly, for I want the world of FFVII to grow, for new things to happen with each living character or learn more of the history.

Does that mean it will be the same for everyone? Of course not. Some will like FFVI better, some will take firm hold of the original FF and call it the best there is. Others may like Onion Knights better than SOLDIERs (or guys who think they were in SOLDIER anyway). And *gasp!* some people will despise Final Fantasy start to finish. But even if I didn't love Final Fantasy, particularly its first foray into 3D, I wouldn't call anything this popular overrated. Take the Halo example cited above: I despise Halo with the firey intensity of a hundred burning suns. But wow, lots of people think its the shit. So obviously, its rating is dependent on its popularity, and it is thus rated exactly where it should be.
