Intro to the future

I don't normally become a part of a community just to be a part of a community, so normally I wouldn't even do this. But Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all time so it should be easy enough. I'm hoping to do something special for the fan community, if I am so able. In a way, introducing myself here is a way to kick myself into gear. I write fiction, I like stories, and creativity. I'm a screenwriter at heart. If you guys post fan fiction, I guess that's mostly why I'm here. I have a great idea, and it would be nice if someone who has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Compilation wouldn't mind reading a spoilerrific outline to let me know how much fan nitpicking I could get from readers who are really hardcore. I know it's probably not necessary, but I'd like to be able to please as many fans as possible. I know FF7 and I played Crisis Core, and I have AC complete. But I don't know Dirge of Cerberus and I'm using some of the elements from that in my story. Anyway - doesn't matter, any info on how to post, and who might be willing to critique would be greatly appreciated. And you know: glad to be here Thanks everybody

Welcome! We definitely have a few people here who have an "encyclopedic knowledge of the Compilation"... I'm not one of them, however. :P If you do become a part of our community then I'm sure one of them will be happy to help you out. So I suggest you take a look around our forums, join in with our discussions, and start getting to know some people. Let me know if you need any help! :)

*Reads thread title*... but I don't need an intro to the future. I'm already there :awesome:.

Welcome aboard. May this place be relevant to your interests.

Hello and welcome! If you seek expertise on FFVII and Compilation, you have come to the right place.

If you're looking for fan fiction writers to critique your work, you can't do better than take Flint's advice and become an active member here. I would also recommend that you look for fan fiction you like on the topics that interest you, and post thoughtful comments on those stories. It's the fastest way to earning another author's goodwill, as I'm sure you can imagine.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to affect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective point of view, it is more like a big ball of wibbily wobbly timey wimey...stuff.

Welcome! Enjoying the enthusiasm in your post. =)

I know a great deal about Dirge of Cerberus and recently I've refreshed my memory banks on Crisis Core. I may be able to answer a question or two.

That's an impressive welcome party. This looks pretty promising, I don't think I would have imagined Final Fantasy VII having such an active community these days.

(Wouldn't have anything to do with Square's trollin' would it? Final Fantasy VII EXCLUSIVELY ON PS4! LOL)

My earliest exposure to internet fandom filled me with great enthusiasm that there was the potential for your favorite things to live on forever. You really feel like your collective imagination could take you anywhere. Sadly, wells dry up, the experience of reading fan fiction to find the really good stuff becomes a grind, and you see the same pieces of fan art everywhere. - Or something like that. While I suppose it is good to look ahead, it's pretty good to look behind you sometimes too, especially when you've left a shinier gem back there then those ahead of you. I think Final Fantasy VII is an example worth examining, like any work by a great filmmaker.

I hope my newly reinvigorated exposure to fandom yields results closer to that of my younger idealistic days and farther from my much closer, much more cynical ones. Especially if this is the kind of welcome I get just for stopping to say "hi"!

So I suppose fan fiction isn't actually hosted on this site anywhere, though? I think I figured it must be.

I'm the Fanworks editor, so I'm probably a good person to reply to your question.

My feeling is that there isn't much point in hosting fan works here, for several reasons:

1. FF.net and AO3 already offer two extremely comprehensive collections which we could never hope to match
2. Someone would either have to curate it, which would be divisive, or it would be a mini-archive of fan works by anyone in the community - but again, they would get much more exposure on AO3 or ff.net.

People do start threads in the Creativity section of this forum where they post their fan works, but those threads tend to prove my point, because while they often get a lot of thanks, they don't get much feedback.

You can also posts links in the Creativity thread to fan works posted off-site (e.g. AO3, deviant art).

Eventually (i.e., when I have the time to do it) we will, I hope, have links to what I consider to be major or landmark fan works (like Frank Vederosa's Internet series or ObstinateMelon's comic), but it will be curated, either by me or someone else.

Thank you Tres, now I can't let go off the headcanon that you are the TLS equivalent of the Obi-Wan Kenobi ghost. You may have died and left the physical plane (the process of writing the LTD Book killed you :monster: ) but you still stay in ghost form for the lulz.

Quoted because I like the sound of this.

Wow, I had a whole response written out, and it was obliterated because I wrote ff-dot-net, (YAY I couldn't even do brackets!) and don't have five posts yet... Even though I'm pretty sure that's not a real website? Then I get hit with automated sarcasm about it. Yeah, that was fun. I get wanting to combat, and avoid spam but I don't really get why I'm not allowed to just go back and take the "links" out of my previous message. Anyway...

The gist of it is how I'm surprised that a dedicated fan site doesn't host fan materials, but that's probably my own ignorance due to minimal exposure to contemporary fandom, and the fact that sites like this don't need to, when providing links (eventually) is a good enough compromise.

And thanks for telling me. Obviously

I have heard about new members having few abilities before making 5-10 posts, but is it really so bad that new members get a sarcastic automated "lol no u" message from the site if they try to post a link? If so then this sounds like something that needs fixing.

When I tried to type FF.net in the message, after sending it, I was asked to log in again, then when I logged in, it said I wasn't allowed to post a link due to not having posted five messages. This automated response basically dared me to complain about it. - Then I realized I wasn't going to be allowed to go back and change any of it either. Hitting "back" just took me to the quoted text in the box, but everything I had typed was gone.

After that it's hard to see why I wouldn't complain. Which makes it more annoying, because it makes me feel like an asshole for bringing it up.

You should have the ability to post links etc. now. It's an anti-spam measure. Sorry about that.

Your feedback is appreciated futurestoryteller. :salute:

It's an anti-spam measure. Sorry about that.
I was going to create a thread about this now in the Feedback section, but if the 'I dare you to complain' message is removed or replaced by something neutral, then there's no need to continue discussing this topic. :monster:
