Is Midgar Zolom the Shinra Company's creation?

my personal view on this, the snake were at one point a lot smaller and less dangerous than they are now, but with the recent events and the changes to the planet, it has evoled into what we see in the game.

just my idea on the whole thing

Shinra doesn't have a monopoly on monsters. I'd say either licorice's explanation of being modified by Shinra or simply that it is one of the monsters that always existed. Though the miners dialogue is compelling evidence to the contrary.

You can tell by the monster's appearance and locale. Materia Keeper was probably a monster that evolved around the usage of mako. Come to think of it, do monsters in the world of FF7 evolve faster than creatures? That would explain the quick adaptation to Materia hoarding.

These creatures are crazier than normal animals so it stands to reason they'd develop around new trends faster.

Just on the note of whether or not there's only one Midgar Zolom, I always thought there were at least two? The one that chases the party around the Marshlands, and the one that they find impaled on the tree trunk.

Part of me wants the Midgar Zolom to be a fecked up side effect of science gone wrong courtesy of your friendly neighbourhood Shinra. The other part of me wants them to be a species that just evolved in the Marshlands, like how in FFIX Zidane says there's probably a bunch of weird monsters in the Qu's Marsh.

^^Given that we see more monsters (and more dangerous ones) where ever there is lots of mako I'm thinking most of the monsters are naturally occurring. I can kinda buy the idea that the monsters around Midgar might be from Shin-Ra mishandling stuff, but we know that there are areas where mako can be found on the surface. And most of those areas have the nastiest monsters.

Have to agree with what Obsidian Fire said, Mako areas = more evloved, stronger monsters.

So i guess its safe to say that Mako is what creates the more powerful monsters in the game, while the weaker ones are the more natural creatures of the planet that have been around for awhile and not been hyper evoled due to Mako.
