So I'm (finally) getting around to look at FF3 and Kefka is inside of it.

Are there two different Kefka's, or is 6 a remake of 3 or something? What's going on here?

No, Final Fantasy VI is an actual game, and there is also a separate Final Fantasy III. The latter just wasn't released in the US for a while, or something like that, that's all.

The Japanese Final Fantasy 2, 3, and 5 were not initially released in North America (I'm not sure about Europe. ) So when Final Fantasy 4 and 6 came overseas, they were rebranded as Final Fantasy 2 and 3, respectively. This issue was resolved when Final Fantasy 7 had the original title worldwide, and the various remakes and ports of the older games have had their original Japanese titles ever since then.

^Final Fantasy VII was the first mainline FF released in Europe. So we didn't get I, IV and VI until the Playstation re-releases (or II, III and V for that matter), but we also didn't get the naming confusion thing.

You're implying III got a PS rerelease. Nobody but JP got III until the DS version came out in 2006.

I'm prepared to be corrected on this, but I've always thought the renumbering was just dumbing down for the American market, the same way that the beautiful, minimalist covers on Final Fantasy games between VII and XII were replaced with various pictures ranging from passable to, well, this:

I know that's a Greatest Hits version, but Europe's "Platinum" equivalent was much more aesthetically pleasing as well.

See also: the way "foreign" TV shows often get remade for American TV because it's assumed that viewers wouldn't understand them otherwise, even when they're in English (like The Office).

Regardless, it's time for everyone to stop referring to IV as II and VI as III. It only creates confusion.

That idiocy stemmed from a mistaken belief that North American gamers wouldn't buy a game that didn't depict the main character on the front box art.

Probably, but also it looked a bit like a GCSE maths textbook or something :monster:

I still like FF7's NA cover. The washed out render of Cloud (facing away, notably) with the Shinra tower looming is a very effective cover. I agree on all the others, however. And why the hell does FF9's cover leave out three of the characters? You could probably make the argument that Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, and Steiner are the "mainest" of hte main characters, but then what the hell is Amarant doing there?

As for the numbering...I don't know if it was about dumbing down so much as just trying to make it look a bit more cohesive. But it was a bit shortsighted/pessimistic to assume that the others would never be released here. I still have no idea why they then decided to keep VII's number as it was. I'm glad, it's just an odd point to change your mind at, haha.

I know I can browse the internet for this, and if that's what ya'll would like me to do instead just tell me so, but...I had no idea there were alternate covers. Are they...perty?

Okay, I've seen 'em now...there is a sort of understated beauty to those versions...ESPECIALLY with 8's logo (probably my favorite). I certainly don't think the NA covers 'ruined' anything, but they are a little hamfisted and expository

Idc which version is better or which FF got a NA version first. All I know is that Kefka is overrated as F..:)

:gtfo: :ultros:

quite agreed. i finished it and while i surely ate kefka he's a really good villain. i assure you, he's not the villain i "love to hate" but i can't deny his character. i liked the end when he questioned what love was and its meaning.
that being said, i just finished it last night and it was a great game, but it wasn't spectacular or anything in my opinion but i was really impressive. i'm on 5 now.

only one more game to go and i'm finally out of spriteville...thank God

On Topic: Final Fantasy 6 is a glorious game, Kefka is a hilarious / awesome villain and all non-believers should be shunned. All glory to the Overmind.

Off Topic: skeptic - Call me an idiot if you want but I'm curious. Is your avatar Mark from Trainspotting?

Not denying the fact that FF6 is a great title unfortunately the weakest part of it is the villain he was a total cliche villain with no depth.

His actions are pretty much standard most specifically a lot of villains done the same or some are worst than him
