Holy shit, Charlotte, NC?? I can actually go see it then! And it'll only be like a 35-minute drive.

I am genuinely surprised.

I actually thought of you when I saw that. :monster:

And I think I made Tenny's day when I told her that they now have a showing in MN. :monster:
:monster:

I hate that you still don't have an Atlanta showing. I'm shocked that we would get one here before you guys.

Feel free to come up to Charlotte and go see it with me, though.

It's just completely baffling, you know? I know I keep harping on the subject because I really want to watch it in theaters, but why Atlanta has never made the list is just mind boggling to me.

So basically all I've got to say is that it was awesome!!

Even though I may not agree with all the cross overs to other FF games, it was an awesome movie!!! LOVED IT!!!

FYI, you must wait till after the credits!

I've got two tickets reserved to see this tomorrow night -- one for me and one for whatever nerdy chick replies to my Craigslist ad. :monster:

finally watched it. Couple of things I wished they'd explain better, but a good film none the less. Looks beautiful.

Not that great as a stand alone movie tbh. Hard to follow what's going on at times.

Voice acting is terrible at times, especially Libertus. Typical shitty anime dub acting. Aaron Paul is perfect though.

I agree on Libertus. Jesus H. His scenes were painful
specially the part where they were in the restaurant
. Might be his VA struggling with the American accent. Maybe he should've kept his English one in the movie

Lots of meh things about the movie and it doesn't really work well as a standalone film. It kinda fails at the characterization of the protagonists.
Maybe omitting some of the unnecessary action scenes and spending a little more time on the characters would've gone a long way to make this better.

The action at least was a lot of fun if not at times a bit hard to follow. The warpstrike ability does lend itself to some neat choreography.

Visuals are great. Although I'm actually kinda sad to see Insomnia de-Tokyofied. Apparently the Japanese fans complained about it being Tokyo and so they changed it and added more traditional European/fantasy elements to the architecture. I liked the previous Japanese feel to it though! Might be a case of "the grass is always greener on the other side".
Still looks great though. Even seems to have multiple levels so it feels reminiscent of Midgar and the slums in places.

Product placement. Ohhh boy. Seeing ads for Japan Airlines or American Express kinda takes you out of it.
And the Audi. Very prominently being shown off driving down the highway while the characters even compliment it and how nice it handles and shit. Way too in your face. It's the AC phones all over again. :P

Voice acting as so often in Square Enix products was a mixed bag. I think the main actors (Paul, Heady and Bean) did a good enough job with what they had. Most of the other guys weren't very good. Libertus was terrible.

Oddly, it seemed like the lip sync was...well, not always in sync. Despite the fact that the English version in this case is the original, not the dub. I suppose it might have to do with the fact that a lot of the characters had facial capture done separately from the VAs, so the actors essentially had to sync their line readings with the finished animations and occasionally it's ever so slightly off.

The post credits scene seems to use Japanese lip movements so the lip sync here is completely and noticeably terrible.

Also after all the high quality CG, Noctis and friends are clearly rendered with in-game assets. A bit jarring, lol.

Ravus' motivation seems a bit dumb. Same with the Kingsglaive traitors. They all seem to do some mental gymnastics to justify working with Niflheim despite them having lost families/homes *to* Niflheim. But somehow it's Lucis' fault. Hm. Okay. People can be like that, so it's not exactly hard to believe. I'm just saying they're dumb. :monster:

Ravus seems too obvious to be the actual villain/final boss of XV so I hope he actually isn't.

That scene with Regis and Iedolas at the signing with the rising tension was kinda well done imo.

Diamond Weapon! Multiple ones!! Holy shit. Makes me even more excited for VIIR. And Nyx summoning Knights of the Round (or rather, Kings of the Round? :p ) to fight them off. Them using the Warpstrike as well was dope.
That was a crazy climax mixing the one on one fighting on falling debris and shit from AC with a goddamn Kaiju movie.

Ultros, wtf. Not even sure why they put him on that airship. :ultros:

Character deaths - damn, a lot of people biting the dust in this.
Regis was kinda sad. I had hoped that his death report in XV was just misdirection from the Empire and that he was just held captive. But being played by Sean Bean sealed his fate. :monster:
Gladio's dad too. Noct and Gladio are gonna be pissed.

I feel for everyone who was interested in Crowe's character. She got offed way too quickly. Which is why I would've liked more time building these characters up. As it is, her death happens way too soon for me to have any reaction to it.

I wonder if Nyx is truly gone? That's what the deal with the kings was, but...I wanna see the body. =P
Or ashes. Y'know.

Also, I'm unclear on the magic powers. They stop working when Regis dies, but Noctis can still warpstrike and everything. I assume as the prince his powers aren't simply borrowed but permanent, but the other three also have this power where they can summon their weapons and such...or did they borrow magic from Noctis then?

And that Glauca=Drautos reveal. Kinda figured something like that would happen. Glauca being in a full body armor with voice modulation made it obvious there was gonna be a "shocking reveal".

Was the armor magical? Or Magitek? Like when he got run over by the car he suddenly popped up fully armored and just flipped it into the air so it does seem like it's fairly special.

Also, Insomnia got WRECKED. Damn son. I wonder if XV will have any set pieces coming close to this. =P

Anyway, my verdict:

3/5.

It's average. Lots of meh stuff. But also quite a lot of dumb fun to be had. It's not great but watchable. I liked it enough as an introduction to XV even though it doesn't succeed as a standalone story.
I liked actually seeing Final Fantasy elements such as different monsters and magic being used, something that was very sparse in Advent Children.

Some form of a
summon/astral/superhuman being? I mean we didn't really see his body completely disintegrate or anything. Plus we have Libertus waiting for him in Galahd. lol

The Pixie King
Or he could have joined the knights of the round with Regis. :P

I know it's not a great film but I had so much fun watching it. It completely depends on whether or not you can turn off your brain, which understandably is not something a lot of people are good with. That's fine. I'm half brain dead most of the time anyway so the ride was great all the way through, and I even got a kick out of the horrible, cheesy dialogue and bad lip synching because sometimes I enjoy watching bad B movies.

I can see why critics were so harsh on it
I can almost see them planning the movie. Like, one guy goes "okay we need to up the stakes on the airship, we could use something reasonable, completely understandable and easy to follow... or we can bring in mother fucking ULTROS," and everyone is like "FUCK YEAH" and then some guy goes "but why would he be there?" and everyone proceeds to ignore him.

So the critics are going, "Why is there a giant octopus in the plane?" and everyone else is screaming "ULLTROS!!111" and I'm firmly in the latter company.

They are ignoring the wider audience to cater to the FF fans who just want dumb fanservice. Good. I'm a fan, I like dumb fanservice, I want to be catered to. I'm buying your fucking games over and over again, continue to cater to me."

I agree with the voice acting. Who casted Libertus? Fire them. Final Fantasy generally has better voice acting than this. You get a bad on occasion, but Libertus has so many fucking lines, why would you get him something so grating at that? There's so maaany good voice actors, who... why?

Casting him for a side character is fine, but you need someone more liveable for a main character.

I'm worried about Tabata. I like his games, even when they weren't perfect, but he hasn't quite learned yet that
killing fucking everyone doesn't necessarily make a good, satisfying ending. He got lucky in Crisis Core, but he needs to stop this shit. I mean, it might have nothing to do with him, it might be the writers, but I'm starting to wonder.

At least when other people die at the end of the story, writers can sometime invoke some sort of angle, like Xion's tragedy, or Tidus disappearing. Not just, "Ah, I am now sad but satisfied."

I can only be happy that the movie limits time, because when people die, his characters tend to prattle on and onnnn, breaking the good will and dissolving the bittersweet nature.

All in all, I really love this movie. It's dumb. I know it's dumb, and you know it's dumb, but I also know it's awesome and I would love to watch in in theaters.

Tabata is not the writer nor the director of KINGSGLAIVE .
