I think multi-classing is a useful tool for picking up a particular utility or base property that a class may have as a feat at level 1.
Of course, it's not wholly optimal to invest heavily in multi-classing but as far as rounding out a build goes I think if you know what you're doing it for, dabbling in a couple levels in a class that has synergistic features can be pretty useful!
Not to mention that there are races whose bonuses encourage some degree of multiclassing (whether or not its optimal for that class is something else, but races like half-orcs, half-elves and humans are designed to be versatile like that).
