BTW, I seem to remember something being said that IDW's Kingdom of Monsters comic being linked to the upcoming film back when the comic was first announced.

Anyone able to yay or nay that?

In lack of real news, I figured that I'd post something about the existing image we've got.

I saw someone posting a piece of artwork interpreted from the ComicCon photograph. Their version of Godzilla looks like a cross between the Hulk, Godzilla, T-Rex, & Zilla.

I played around with the photograph's sharpness & contrast when it was released you can see / download the full size images from my G+ if you're so inclined:

• Original Screenshot
• Sharpened Screenshot

Because it's a silhouette, the lighting makes it difficult to tell what's what. If you alter the contrasts a bit, it makes it easier to distinguish Godzilla's lower jaw from the dark background rubble. I outlined everything definitive, but then the foreground smoke cuts the rest off.

Hopefully this puts any fears of a massively lower-jawed Godzilla to rest.

Here's a thread on the IDW comic from KP. I don't see anything about it being tied into Legendary's film at all, though I just glanced through. Also, I'd assume I'd see some crossover in Their Legendary Godzilla Film Sub-Forum but there isn't any, so I'm gonna venture a "no" as my educated guess on the subject.

Thanks X. Figured as much since I hadn't heard anything about them being linked since. Wonder if it was originally planned for them to be linked, or if it was just speculation?

I assume that when they were originally being picked up, there might've been some idea of doing that, but not once it actually got into the writing parts.

Is this a remake of the original Japanese movie from the 50ese or is it Stand alone like Roland Emmerick's shit stain.

FUCK FUCK FUCKITY FUCK FUCK. Here's to hoping that they don't actually manage to stall production of the film, because that's just no good for anyone - especially Gareth Edwards, and us.

On a positive note: Godzilla's gonna be throwing down with at least two other kaiju, and the story will be shown from a soldier's point of view.

X :neo:

Jeeze I hope it is not stalled to much, it would a shame if they could not get finished in time for Godzilla's 60th Anniversary.

I wonder if one of the kaiju will be a mecha in order to do the typical "initially enemies, then must team up to confront even bigger threat" plot point. Or if Godzilla will actually get double teamed by two monsters at once like in the Toho films.

The soldier point of view sounds interesting. It actually reminds me of the current Godizlla: The Half-Century War mini-series coming out right now that's being written and drawn by James Stokoe (it is really awesome, any Godzilla fan should be checking it out).

@PhantomSephiroth: I'm tempted to say neither. It's Toho, and it's real Godzilla, but not all of the Godzilla films all fall into a single continuity (though many of them cross over, and even Roland Emmerick's film became connected with the Toho kaiju "Zilla"), so it's not exactly connected to them, but it's not a remake of the original film either. It's also for Godzilla's 60th anniversary.

@Theozilla: Same here. I'm kinda hoping that it's Godzilla getting double teamed, so that he can establish how he's VERY MUCH the king of the monsters, before any other films potentially pick back up with him.

I too hope for a two on one handicap match, Godzilla against both of the others. Godzilla partnering up with other kaiju never made too much sense to me, albeit I'll happily allow it in certain continuities if its Rodan or Anguiras. And if its a free for all where all three monsters try to kill each other it takes something away from Godzilla's raw dominance.

You know, I just watched Godzilla X Megaguiras again the other day, which gives me some thoughts on things I hope to see in this movie. While it was batshit B-movie campy in spots, like most rubber suit kaiju movies tend to be even if they aim to be dead serious, there were some really good bits mixed in there. The suit actor for Godzilla and the head controllers did an excellent job getting Godzilla to act in that flick. The body language they used stuck close with a lot of what we see in any G-movie where he doesn't act like a dude with a tail while making it more reactive somehow. You could just watch the way he moved his head and such and get a definite sense that in this continuity Megaguiras was the first giant monster he'd ever seen besides himself. When he got knocked over and pulled himself up, or missed repeatedly when he tried to catch his speedy opponent, you could see the frustration building in the shoulders, the angle of the neck, even the way the tail lashed. Little details like that that make the monster feel alive and real, whether its a dude in a suit or an all CG model or a freaking hand puppet, make me happy. It might not effect whether the plot makes sense, or if everything is filmed and scored properly, but I still hope they manage it.

The American film also got a shout out in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. There's brief dialogue at the beginning that mentions an attack on New York in 1998, and (paraphrasing, as it's been a while since I saw it) one soldier says "wasn't that Godzilla?", to which another replies, "the Americans said so, but it wasn't."

:monster: TBH, the TriStar Zilla could've been lauded as a great American kaiju film if they hadn't called it Godzilla and used the roar.

While he gets a little shout out in GMK, Zilla actually appears as a Kaiju attacking Sydney, Australia in Godzilla: Final Wars. Godzilla basically shows up, knocks him into the opera house, and roasts him to which the Xillian commander replies, "I always knew that tuna eating monster was no good!"

I like some of what he says in there, some of it really resonates with me. While it made sense back in the Showa era to turn Godzilla from a nuclear fueled berzerker into the protector of mankind (especially Japan) to get more kids in the audience, it really is hard to reconcile with his origins. That's why the Heisei series was always my favorite overall interpretation of his motivations. He does protect Japan from other monsters, but indirectly. He doesn't really care about the human folk scurrying about, hell he doesn't even seem to notice they're there unless they attack him with enough force that he notices. Some of the other kaiju though, they DO notice humanity and try to kill us off. It just so happens they step into Godzilla's territory to do so, and when they do they get their shit wrecked. Much as I hated what they did to Ghidorah's origin in the Heisei series, that film might be the best example. You get Ghidorah rampaging around destroying everything in sight, and the best we can come up with is "let's undo that attempt to erase the big G from history by powering Godzilla back up with a nuclear sub so he can kill it for us." The moment Godzilla does this? He turns around and starts rampaging and destroying everything in sight :reptar:
