Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Spoiler Thread

People are going nuts over this ending, and imo it's very meh. To be honest it's just Lightning stepping away from a train in *plot-twist * France, and smiling.

Not new since Xenoblade has done something like this, also the endings to FF 8 and FF 7 AC.

And yet people are acting like Jack died on the Titanic

I read spoilers regarding Lumina and Hope.
Lumina's true identity not that surprising, a little odd, but then again the experience of reading random spoilers online isn't the same as playing through the game and seeing the story unfold before your eyes. I usually avoid spoilers but its just the frustration of having to endure these sequels to find out what happens to our heroes that I find annoying.

The ending/epilogue was ok to me(because I didn't understand a thing), I'm 90% we'll get more info about it once the game either releases in the US or once the Ultimania drops.

I'm guessing Bhuni dropped the "Kill Mwynn again" plan sometime after XIII-2.

I find it funny that some people seriously believes that XIII will be tying into XV based on the epilogue.

I called Lumina being Lightning and thought she probably had to do with Claire turning into Lightning after her parents death. I thought we could get a more straightforward But so did a bunch of people, but I still think I'm special somehow.

I hope the ending makes a more impact when I understand what they are saying because, as I am repeating it again, I genuienly hate the ending. It took what was a great, albiet plot holed, ending from XIII, grabbed some ideas from it without any of its importance. Like hope being "tortured" by Bhuni with Lightning watching reminded me of the Fang and Vanille scene. Only Fang's torture was so much more meaningful, it wasn't just "haha look at this jerk"- but an attempt to break down characters into rage and despair- something they had fallen in before, along with the combination of Vanille's helplessness and the culmination of Fang's desperation and foolishness.

Also, that ending was super anime, and XIII while always being that way, this one was SHINING FINGER/WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK WE ARE- stupid over the top that it was impossible to keep a strait face with. The resolution with Noel seemed half assed and thrown in there, but at least he got one. I almost saw red when I saw Noel with Sazh's summong.

And like I said before, being reborn into the "real world" has has helped a special place of hate in my heart, but that's less objective and more- I really can't stand those friggin endings. I hated the idea that they would get a new world to begin with but I silently accepted it, I just think that creating a world on Gran Pulse after Cocoon was just a better, more satisfying ending.

Also, it just messes in my head with the mythology. Final Fantasy worlds are connected somehow, Lightning in Eorzea and in Dissidia are kinda, almost canon. Gilgamesh I'm going to bet is suppose to be the same Gilgamesh from other titles. Bringing the real world in it is sloppy and makes the mythos just... weird.

I just... this almost killed my desire to play the game. But playing a game for the ending is silly. I do plan on getting this game and I do look like I'll enjoy it. But the ending of a trilogy I've been this invested in is sad when it falls short.

There are two things about this ending that I did like though:

The difference between the hectic animeoverleveled superpower chaos of the ending, to the very simple, quiet Lightning in France- minimal music, minal doing. Just Lightning walking and smiling in a rural area, the contrast is kind of beautiful. Lightning really seems at peace.

The ending battle. I said it before but I'm really looking forward to the Bhuni fight, it's thematic and epic, and the sometimes I can hear hints of other themes in the music that just makes it better.

Also, interesting that Hope-Lightning become a majorly important relationship. I can see it's going to rial up HopexLightning fans, but taken out of shipping context, I've always really loved their bond. So it's nice to see Hope sacrifice something for her sake.

Not enough Sazh. But we already knew that.

1. Why?

2. Dissidia isn't canon and Light's trip to Eorzea was because Bhuni sent her there as a test.

Ending much better than XIII-2. Leta was so happy  He was like "Toriyama! Thank you" "Happy Happy" When he saw Lightning in the Epilogue he was all "Kawaii!!" He was quite emotional through the whole finale really. Apparently he teared up some too :puppy:

I can field this one, I think. It's just ... well, odd. It's basically a creation story for Earth in the end, but Earth has been featured in FF before (The Spirits Within), where its cosmology was tied more to the Lifestream concept, which the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos does not feature.

Of course, with each FNC series (FFXIII, Type-0 and XVersus) being part of a different timeline anyway, it's probable that the Earth from TSW isn't the Earth from the FNC multiverse.

Sometimes it seems like FF has gotten more complicated than it should have been. Once upon a time, it was just each game on a different world. Even after the first sequel (Legend of the Crystals), things were pretty tidy.

With Gilgamesh's appearance in FFVIII, some kind of multiverse was made concrete, and theories also began to form that FFVIII and FFIII were set on the same world, as separated by a great span of time. Then Vagrant Story came along and was blatantly set in the same world as Tactics.

FFIX built on the multiverse concept a little with the crystal of creation and its memory of Deathgaze. After FFX-2, we got our first confirmation of two separate FF worlds being set in the same universe without actually being the same planet (Spira and VII's world), and by the time FFXII came along, it was no longer even a novelty that it was set on the same world as a previous game.

And, hell, just look at the memories of those crystals in the final dungeon from FFIV: The After Years.

At this point, we've had separate FFs set on the same world at different periods in time, FFs set in the same universe at different periods, FFs that share similar metaphysics while their relation to one another on a galactic scale is unclear, FFs that definitely share the same multiverse and origin yet have completely different continuities and may or may not be closely related to other FF universes/multiverses -- and then they all fall under the same omniverse umbrella.

It's gotten a bit like Marvel, DC, Image, etc. in that they all have their own multiverse but are included in the overall omniverse.

Dissidia is canon too, btw. :monster:

I don't know if it'll be explained in the game, but does anyone have any idea why Earth is on top of Ygdrassil?

We're going to have to agree to disagree about Dissidia.

Deathguise in IX is a throwback to Deathgaze of VI.

I'm clueless about anything IV related.

What are your reasons for discounting Dissidia? You can PM me so we don't get off track here.

And, yeah, I get that Deathgaze is a reference to VI, same as the cycle of souls is in reference to VII, but they weren't just easter eggs. They're part of the story too. IX's world really has a Lifestream and the crystal of creation really has a memory of Deathgaze. That would suggest either that IX and VI's worlds are in the same universe or the crystal contained at least two separate universes that contained the two worlds.

I've managed to avoid the larger spoilers I think. I'm with Captain on that whole staring at the sun thing. Holy crap I know it's a spoiler thread but jeeeeeez I have no self control and I can't stay out.

Anyway I've caught something about a battlestar galactica-esque ending and heard some amazingly pretty tracks. Now I need to wait 3 months to play the game without being spoiled by anything else.

Waaaaaaa.

Is that really Earth?

I know lightning ends up in a place similar to France, but im still not convinced, could be just a modern world like FFXV or something like that.

It's definitely our Earth and France. The souls from Lightning's world go past Saturn, then Jupiter and then the Moon before settling on a planet resembling ours. Furthermore, the train station where she disembarks has a sign saying "GARE" (French for "station") and another saying "BLANC CHATEAU."

I think Bhuni has become one of my fav characters mostly due to his badass theme and Dat JP voice.

He's not a complete bastard besides killing Mwynn and abandoning Etro, he even acknowledged the latter's "Goddess Of Death" title.

He wants what's best for humanity even if they're turned into husks.

Bhunivelze seems to me to be a child of the dark and the light.

Like Chaos and Cosmos (Dissidia reference :awesome:) had a son.

... But my fal'Cie?! :'(:'(:'(

Also all the other creatures?!

I guess the title "complete bastard" is totally subjective.

You still have Cactuar at least until the ending happens.

He's the statue in Yusnaan, in charge of distributing food rations (and other resources... I think) around the world.
