[Mideel] In this topic I comment on all of the towns of FF7.

Oh, and why Icicle Inn next? There's that little place where you get the key to Midgar, and that Shell place where Aerith dies before Icicle Inn. I am ever so desperate to comment on those :monster:.

The Forgotten Capitol really doesn't count, there's no one there. As for Bone Village...well I did forget it about it, but if it counts at all it would only count barely.

I thought Wutai was sort of born from the fear and fustration that many in the South East region (and other countries) feel from of the loss of culture due to globalization/westernization. Aside from its obvious Asian influences, it turning into a tourist trap represents a loss of pride. Crisis Core, if anything, shows just how desperate Wutai was to keep it's identity and how proud they were of their country. But yeah, we only did get to see the end of the war and so we didn't get to see the better part of Wutai.

After spending well over an hour last night reading through the entire thread, I have to say this thread is really awesome. The discussion feels so inspired on every page.

There is one area where I disagree and I'm going to get that off my chest. I really think the placement of the Gold Saucer was intentional by the development team. Placing it right next to the biggest shitthole on the planet is pretty illogical, but it does show off a dramatic contrast between happy and unhappy places. It also tells of the governments ignorance as this happens all the time in real life - like building an amuzement park right next to the poorest and filthiest area in the city. That money could have been spent on rebuilding these areas, but instead the government largely ignores those pleas in favor of something less necessary.

Of course, this doesn't explain why the Gold Saucer would still be placed in the middle of a fucking unpassable sand pit!

Well that gives the writers a lot of credit...but maybe :monster:

But yeah...in the desert is...odd. Frankly, so is the fact that a prison and amusement park one in the same.

*cough* Mog! Icicle Inn (or Bone Village, whatever you're gonna do)!

Bone Village

BoneVillage.jpg

Yeah Bone Village is kinda weird for me. I don't have a lot to say about it (that's why I'm doing I. Inn right after this), but that's only because the game doesn't do much with it. Now this time I can't blame Square; this is simply one of those towns that's just a pit stop to more interesting places. It's interesting in its own right though; an excavation center on a relatively low key and sparsely populated continent. I thought getting the Lunar Harp was a weird little thing to do; apparently they're not a big deal considering the excavation team just kinda says you have to dig one up to enter the Forgotten City like it's no big deal. The dialogue sort of implies that its a well known artifact; couldn't they have loaned Cloud and co one? I guess not.

And what the fuck is up with that fighter jet? Sure you can explain it away now with the retroactive connection with FFX's world and the lost technology thing, but what were they thinking at the time of them adding it? SHIT'S WEIRD. I liked the digging thing though, even if it was pretty tedious. I usually just grab the unique items and bounce. It's a good backup if you lost some one time only things, such as the Bahamut Zero or the Phoenix Materia.

Anywho, there's not a lot to say about this place, I guess. On to the next one, Icicle Inn!

Always assumed the crashed jet was a relic from some war.

It doesn't seem consistent with the level of technology, or more specifically, the level of aeronautic technology seen in the rest of the game/series, though. It just seems 'there'.

The Highwind has some sort of jet or rocket technology, no? After its propellers fall off etc. I only think it is not convincing since they don't appear to have the infrastructure. If they store them at Junon, where the hell do they store 'em?

As for bone village, I think it took me a while to work out what I was doing first play through, but it ain't too difficult to find the key thing once you know what you're doing. As you aren't mentioning the Forgotten city, I shall have to say its awesome. Love the shell houses, and remember enjoying exploring the place in my first play through. I think I like it more than Wutai because its appearance is so alien rather than the familiar asian pagoda thing. It was also the setting to the infamous death scene of Aerith with the sad music in the background ;'(.

...You can get Bahamut Zero in Bone Village...? Really? Damn would I have liked to have known that in my first playthrough of the game...:sigh:

Yes, this. I agree that they did a great job of invoking the atmosphere of a wierd and alien, but benign and aethestic, culture with the Forgotten City. It had the feel of one of those great archaeological sites like Pompeii or Macchu Picchu. I loved the whole feel of it being some kind of beached, dried out, faded coral reef. If Junon is the town I'd most like to live in, those houses are the houses I'd most like to inhabit.

In ACC I loved the ghost trees of the Forgotten Capital, because I've been canoing in a place just like that - a drowned forest, where all the trees had turned to bleached skeletons.

Completely forgot about that fighter jet, I mean yeah, there are subs, that Gelkinka aircraft and the rocket but still, the map designers must've been like. "No, this is just missing something. You know what this could use? An F-16 to spice things up. Yeah, like that now it's perfect"

Icicle Inn

Welcome to Icicle Inn, snowbound mountain resort town, and the polar *rimshot* opposite of its counterpart, Costa Del Sol. I've always like the atmosphere of this town better than a lot of the other ones, even if you are here for like, half a second. It has a very 'solid' air that the game obviously intends for you to feel, similar to Midgar, Costa, or Kalm. Even the music is trying to get you into the groove.

I mean come on don't you want to make snowmen listening to this shit? However though, I think it's kinda apparent that Square was kinda running out of ideas at this point in the town design process; I wouldn't be surprised if I. Inn was around the last towns they developed in the dev process. While there isn't very much to do with a snowbound town in the middle of nowhere, I. Inn is a far cry from the character of say, Midgar (with this said I literally do not understand how some people don't like Midgar. It's easily one of the most unique environments in any RPG, ever).

I think the fact that Gast and Ifalna lived here might be a nod from Square to say "HEY WAIT DON'T LEAVE SO FAST THERE'S INTERESTING SHIT HERE WE SWEAR"

However, maybe that's how it was supposed to be. I have no real complaints with this town at all, it's nice, serene, and one of the last stops in the game before shit gets real.

Also if you're reading this and you've never let Elena punch Cloud when the Turks show up, try letting Cloud get blasted on your next playthrough. She decks the shit out of Cloud. I mean pow, right in the god damned kisser. In the case of a possible remake, they gotta keep that shit as is, Cloud sinking to his knees and all.

The next and final town, Mideel!

Kinda late but here's a helpful image of Bone Village I found while organizing some folders.

I doubt anyone here would need it, but it's a convenient little guide to get all the good items :monster:

edit: Also, I was always quite fond of Elena and the scene in Icicle Inn pretty much confirmed my suspicions that she could totally awesome when she wanted.

You know I don't think I've ever gotten hit by Elena. I'm not sure why I never thought to let her hit him, interesting.

I remember it took me so long to figure out how to move on because that damn kids cat won't let you get to the snowboard before you talk to that person in the back of town. I hate when games do that.

How do you not get hit by Elena? she always gets me *fails*

That being said, Mog, thanks for these again. :) Because of you I know things that I didn't before.

And the stuff you can dig up in Bone Village sure is surprising.

I like the Gast/Ifalna history lesson in Icicle Inn, but I can't say much else interested me. I really do like what comes immediately after Icicle Inn though, namely the snowboarding and that area before the cliff where you adventure about and get some nice items, if I do so recall correctly.

The Great Glacier, really? That is my least favorite part of the game, lol. I always dread having to slog through the slow intro to disc 2. Because after that disc 2 is a nonstop roller coaster of awesome :monster:
