The "shiny golden wire of hope" is a gameplay section I can see them removing quite easily. They could replace it with a cutscene, make reference to the original quote and just have the team climb the wire lol.

More like "golden shiny wire of NOPE".

I really hope they leave that in, but maybe expand it. I rather liked the climbing bit even if the timing on the pole jumping was unnecessarily tricky.

Shiny wire of hope could be awesome, I'm just imagining vertigo inducting craziness, like hi tech version of ICO/SOTC.

They'd probably have to drop the part about the batteries, cos that would be kind of nonsensical in more realistic graphics.

I feel like Cloud going all "it's impossible look how high up it goes" was somewhat off considering Cloud was a "SOLDIER" and actually stronger than the rest. That dialogue part should be changed.

Midgar appreciation, you say?

*looks at avatar profile that I have used since at least 2010*

Yup, I think Midgar is cool. :monster:

Given how big Midgar looks in this trailer, I don't see Cloud and Barret really still needing a accidental wire to get up there. A homage to the classic line is all I'm expecting to remain from that sequence.

Unless of course
it's his real self coming through.

Wow! I made a spoiler tag for FFVII, that hasn't happened in a while.

Now that you mentioned it, are we going to have to make an effort not to spoil stuff for new fans on the off chance the rest of the internet hasn't done it already?

The Internet always does it already.

Seriously this game has been out since 1997... anyone who doesn't know it exists lived under a rock and probably doesn't care about spoilers for it anyway.

Well, just because I would hate to spoil a newbies enjoyment, I'll spoiler tag the twists.

As far as I am concerned, the fact that you leave Midgar after the first act is a spoiler. The length of this game is unbelievable, I remember being absolutely blown away by it, and that is part if its tremendous achachievement.

I would recommend we spoiler tag some of the obvious twists:

-Aerith's death
-Any revelations about Cloud's past, lies and otherwise.
-Other deaths, Cait Sith's identity, the fact that you go to space, what Jenova is, and the destruction of Sector 7.

I would also warn newbies to stay away from FF forums until either the game has come out or they play the original cause this story has some seriously awesome twists and it would be a shame not to experience them while immersed.

We haven't spoiler tagged VII twists in the past because it's just been assumed that anyone lurking around these forums will have played the game, but it's a good point that the remake will probably attract new fans to the game. Perhaps we should start requiring tags for posts in the future. I doubt anyone can be arsed going back through hundreds of thousands of old posts to spoiler tag all the old posts though.

That is absolutely not a spoiler, though: not only is it mentioned in the game manual, but there's a woman in Beginner's Hall, barely an hour into the game, who says:
This is jumping ahead a little but, when you leave Midgar... Once you get the world map, you can save anywhere you like. Remember that.

I really don't think we should be spoiler-tagging things from the original Final Fantasy VII, but we should definitely tag any new plot elements in the remake.

I've seen fights on tumblr over people refusing to tag spoilers for Type 0 because the game was out forever in a different format but only in Japan. I sided with tagging spoilers because even if the game was out for years and years in Japan - most Western players wouldn't have had a chance to play it. So like - if they remake Before Crisis (fingers forever crossed) I will tag my spoilers because no one's played that.

With FFVII - even if you don't like older games - you've had a chance to play it and are probably more familiar with the game since it's a pretty big part of pop culture. Aerith Lives graphite is an easter egg in Wreck It Ralph - even if you know nothing about FFVII I feel like a lot of details will be known.

It's like Star Wars - you can't really spoil it because the twists are just too iconic now.

That said, I wouldn't want to ruin the experience for people who don't know anything about it somehow or maybe just know the characters from KH and know nothing about in game histories. So maybe we could have like separate forums - a spoiler free forum for new fans and then a spoiler ok forum for older fans?

I honestly don't give a crap about spoilers, you people who do are too sensitive. The difference between a spoiler on the net and actually playing the game is vastly different in terms of experience. It's like reading a book versus watching a movie.

Yeah but some plot twists get utterly ruined if you know about them before your first playthrough. They're still cool to see with hindsight when you play again but you never get to experience the shock that's supposed to come with the first time you see it happen.

I still wonder what's the point of those giant floodlights on the upper plate.

:awesome: I never even thought of that, but good point. Maybe they had these half a foot thick blinds over their windows.

Anyway, I love the 'new' look of Midgar. I was surprised to see it in daylight, but I'm glad they're giving it a daytime now. Side-note, wonder if the game will have a day/night cycle?
The skyscrapers look amazing. Just seeing these screenshots makes me feel the world of VII is so much bigger and more real than any of the other games covered. I can look at those shots of the buildings and highways and feel that they actually have thousands living there, that there's actually normal stuff going on, like people working, shopping, going to concerts, theater movies, ect.

YES!!! That's what I've always loved about this game - this sense that it's a real world full of ordinary (and extra-ordinary) people living their own stories.

Except if you're normal, reading the book blind will give you more shock and suspense in its plot twists than watching the movie version of it ever will. There's a reason there are endless complaints about movies (or TV shows, since we're living through one of those) that were made from books, but I digress.

Well yeah that basically. What we're seeing here is the classic spoiler argument, some people don't consider spoilers a big deal and others do. It's not about "sensitivity", some people like to go in blind because they like to have an emotional experience with the story. The excitement of a story to most people is not knowing what's going to happen and uncovering it for yourself. That moment of shock when something surprises you. That's what stories are all about for most people, it's the journey.

People who enjoy spoilers are free to do so, but the idea of going in to a story with a bullet pointed version of it in my head already makes me feel ill. The remake is obviously a different kettle of fish because it's a story that's already been told, but if people don't want something spoiled, nobody should be spoiling it for them.

Bottom line: if you don't care about spoilers, good for you, most people do. If the fact that you don't care about spoilers means you're going to post about them without tags (because everybody else is just being too sensitive), then you may be in violation of TLS's rule number one.

THAT SAID, talking specifically about this site and FFVII, I really don't think we should start tagging spoilers now. To do it properly we'd have to go back and add a spoiler tag to like every thread ever, so it seems kind of stupid.

I agree that new plot twists/developments/story lines should be spoiler tagged, but but that's all.

It's like last year when people threw fits about spoilers for the deaths in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The Hobbit has been in print for... about 70-ish years now?

I'm all about respect toward new fans, but I don't want to completely change the way I talk about a game just because some people haven't played (and probably aren't going to) the original game. With as long as it's been out, these potentially new fans should learn caution and know that spoilers are going to be rampant across every medium, from internet forums to your mainstream gaming magazines. Spoilers for people are going to be inevitable.

How about instead of everyone trying to spoilers tag their posts, we set a spoiler free section to talk about the game? It's better than going back and trying to spoiler tag everything. Just an idea. -_-

Night and Day could be interesting. Imagine the characters getting outside the city and Aerith seeing the stars for the first time in her life?

I just hope we can still move at night if we want to - I've heard that FFXV is like simulated camping where you can't see at night and have to camp once it's dark or if you do walk around it's only with a flashlight? That sounds like it could get annoying fast - although I appreciate the attempt at realism.

I read spoilers on Wikias all the time. Frankly speaking it doesn't change my experience one bit. In fact it heightens it, especially if it's an RPG that I could just as easily get lost in.

Blind runs tend to give me regret that I made mistakes and forgot some rare items or something.

Nobody has read/seen everything in existence. How valuable is your time that you can't spare the three seconds to put in spoilers? Most forums have them in tags. I only finished the Wire about three weeks ago, because I had to track down the DVDs. A Dance of Dragons came out in 2007, but I imagine I would've annoyed a lot of people on these forums by openly talking about what happened in a recent episode a year ago.

A lot of forums typically have spoiler threads and non spoiler threads. I'd agree with that idea.

I've just this minute read a translated dengeki interview with Nomura where he talks a little about spoilers:

What about in regards to Aerith?

Concerning Aerith, because the original FINAL FANTASY VII is an old release in 1997, I think there may be a lot of young people who will be touching it for the first time in the full remake of FINAL FANTASY VII. For such people, the question itself is a spoiler regarding Aerith. So I will not answer (laughs).

Source/KHInsider

So the man himself doesn't want new players to be spoiled :P

Edit: Not to say I believe that such things should be spoiler marked. As Lex said, we'd have to go through a lot of posts around here to make this place spoiler free. I agree with maybe having spoiler free threads though.
