I'm playing through FFVII again on my PS3, and going through I'm running up and talking to everyone / looking at everything I can, and I've noticed a few interesting things so far. After picking up a little speed, I've decided to organize some things a bit more, and add in some additional quotes that we've dug up.

So far we've got:

• Shinra Reactions / events after the Midgar bombings.
• Mako Reactor Info
• Bugenhagen's Equipment
• Cosmo Canyon, the Gi Tribe, and Nanaki's Species.

LISTS OF NPC QUOTES

Information about Shinra's reaction / events of the Bombings in Midgar

• After the #1 Reactor Bombing.

Guard #1 said:
"You know, I got some tickets to
"Loveless", do you want to go?"

Guard #2 said:
"What're you, retarded?
Midgar's under martial law now!"

Guard #1 said:
"You mean, you really are concerned
for me?"

Guard #2 said:
"Hell no!!
But in case you forgot,
we're in the middle of a slum."
"They could be anywhere around,
so stay on your guard."

Guard #1 said:
"Right. You mean the AVALANCHERS?"
"Don't you worry.
SOLDIER has been added to the police force."

Guard #1 said:
"Boy, it's been a while since SOLDIER's been
mobilized, hasn't it?"
"I ever tell you that I flunked the
SOLDIER entrance exam?"

Guard #2 said:
"Damn right!!
blahblahblah...... ."
"Hey shut up for a minute
and let me get back to work!"

Guard #1 said:
"............sigh."
• After the #5 Reactor Bombing.

Shinra News via slum tv said:
"And now for the news."

"Due to a terrorist attack by the group named AVALANCHE, parts of Midgar that were tempotatily out of power will be restored momentarily."

"Following President Shinra's lead, Mayor Domino also spoke out public against AVALANCHE"

Red XIII/Nanaki said:
“…sniff…sniff…
This place smells good.”
“It smells the same as Cosmo Canyon.”

Boy at fire place in Cosmo Canyon said:
"This fire is called 'Cosmo Candle'.
It has burned for generations."
"It's a holy flame
that protects this canyon."
"I've heard it only went out once,
long ago."
(Most likely referring to the Gi tribe invasion)

• Red XIII/Nanaki resting in the sun, his tail waving
Red XIII/Nanaki said:
“Hm, that's interesting.”
“It's not as if I'm doing this because I
want to.”
“You see, this tail of mine, moves quite
independently of my will.”

The mayor can also be talked to in the ShinRa HQ. He complains that he isn't really in charge and makes you solve a riddle.

Yeah he leads the whole library puzzle. And Reeve mentions it when discussing the Sector 7 plan, "The mayor's against this anyway," or something like that.

And I still don't get why no one ever mentions the bombing of the Sector 5 reactor (in the game). Everyone talks about their guilt for blowing up the No. 1 reactor, or how many people were killed, or yelling at Barret for destroying the No. 1 Reactor. How come everyone forgets the sector 5 reactor blew up? Did Shinra evacuate the area or something? That would get rid of the deaths, but I would imagine it would still be listed with Tifa and Barret talk abut how it wasn't the right way to do things.

Anyway, good idea for a thread X.

I think it's cause Shinra expected another attack, and when the soldiers show up, Cloud even mentions that it's a trap. I think that the first reactor caused a large number of casualties because there wasn't any protection, and no one was prepared for it. After the #1, Shinra got a heads up to everything.

Thanks.

Are you only interested in quotes relating to the affairs of Shinra?

Anything generally interesting that fills in things about the game or brings up little points that you thought were cool.

With regards to the bombing of sector 5 reactor, I think it's actually because it's a smaller bomb. After the group get off the train having bomb reactor 1, Barret says the next one will be even bigger. However, none of the others seem pleased about the size of the explosion. Back at the base, if you speak to Jessie, she mentions that the detonation was much larger than she expected and that she must have made an error in the calculations she had used (incidentally from a something she found online - perhaps the original AVALANCHE?). She mumble to herself that he will do better next time. Visually as well, if you remember the state of the surrounding sector after number 1 blew up, there's no way way that a bomb the same size could have gone off with Barret and Tifa on that walkway and they survive. As far as I know, AVALANCHE' objective was to stop the Reactors from working, but maybe not destroy them altogether.

Actually, I laughed at that quote a little...

"Due to a terrorist attack by the group named AVALANCHE, parts of Midgar that were temporarily out of power will be restored momentarily."

In other words, good work AVALANCHE!

Okay, it can be taken a few ways perhaps, but I always comprehended that part as: A part of Midgar was without power, but because of AVALANCHE's doings, Shinra has stepped up it's response time to correcting the power outage.

:P

Probably already stated, but that was also in the PSX version.

Anyone read the sign in the Sector Seven Slums, by the materia shop? I did last time and just found out that Cloud has some thoughts to the handwriting.

That's actually a very good point S and G, it was definitely a smaller bomb. It's still a little odd that they never express regret for that reactor (it still knocked out power for the sector, possibly including hospitals), but that's still a good point, I forgot about Jessie saying that.

@Forcestealer:

You're right about the hospitals, etc, but I think the collateral damage of the second bomb was a fraction of the first. This is perhaps why there is no regret shown because, as far as they're concerned, a small amount if any would have lost their lives.

On a side note, has anyone else ever found it weird how Aerith never questions what caused Cloud to fall into the church in the first place? She must have learned at some point that there had been an incident at the No5 Reactor and at least considered putting 2 and 2 together.

@Notorious MOG:

Y'know I've had a think about that and cannot come up with a single person. It's been a while since I last played that portion of the game, so I may have forgotten something. The only discussion I can think of is the old man in lower Junon who complains about the new city polluting the water. Also, from playing FF7 and CC, there is a heavy indication that a number of people came from other parts of the world and may not have been around for the construction of the Plate. Maybe the ones who were got sent to populate the rebuilt Kalm as part of their retirement?

means: Because of AVALANCHE, parts of Midgar are temporarily out of power. That power will be restored momentarily.

Shitty Engrish, but not difficult to figure out what he meant from the context of the game.

Regarding NPCs saying interesting things, there's one in Cosmo Canyon that talks about Professor Gast and when he discovered Jenova. The dude in CC was friends with Gast personally IIRC.

I know this isn't quite on topic, but as to Gast's relations with Cosmo Canyon, wasn't Bugenhagen's observatory a gift from Gast? I seem to remember either Bugenhagen himself or another NPC mentioning it during one of the party's visits.

I don't remember them saying it was a gift from Gast, just that Bugenhagen had gotten it from Shinra. Specifically, the science department.

Shademp, that was pretty good. Where did you get that? I don't think I've read that before, but I never owned the PC version. Was the Vincent line a cheat to have him t your party by the time the first reach Cosmo Canyon?

@S and G

It's the normal script; no cheats involved. Speak to Cait Sith and Vincent, on the Highwind, just after the rocket has failed to destroy Meteor.

I had to use 7mimic (PSX) and Meteor (PC) to get these lines though (they display the used as well as the unused text). Apparently the 'Complete FFVII Script' sites on the net, which I searched for first, aren't so complete :monster:
There were no major differences between PSX and PC here; except that the PC one excludes the word 'handy' from Cait Sith's description of Bugenhagen.

Yeah, I usually refer to the gamescripts to confirm my suspicions like that, but unfortunately very few include the "optional" dialogue you get by talking to party members/npcs when you're not obligated to. I can't blame the authors for not wanting to talk to every npc and jot it down, though.

Yeah that bugs me about the game script. I, too, understand why *every* last line isn't included... but it would be nice you know.

I considered replaying the game to at least get the different playable-character lines throughout the game.

It's sometimes those little non-necessary lines that are the most interesting or hint towards things.

X-SOLDIER- if that is what you're referring to (the NPC quotes and such), then I say yes!
