According to an anonymous owner of a French gamestore, Sony will reveal a smaller and cheaper version of the PS3 at the Gamescom next week. Said PS3 Slim will cost €300,-, which, according to the same rumor, might be replacing the existing PS3 iteration. The PS3 Slim would, according to the information, come with an 80GB hard drive.
As an aside, Sony hasn't lowered the price of their console since its introduction since late 2006.
Early August, the PS3 Slim was mentioned on Germany's Amazon store, but was removed again a few hours later. Next to that, according to a memo of a Japanese retailer, the 80GB PS3 is no longer available. Also, a photo of what might be the box of the new PS3 Slim appeared some time ago, which displayed a design similar to the current PS3, only with a lower profile and square when looked at from the top. Said box lists the hard drive capacity at 120 GB however, contrary to the latest rumor.
