Koller already retracted his statement and said it's still a possibility.

Stop crying.

Since fans all collectively pissed themselves over that comment.

Same...and Sony probably has a point that the majority of people that buy a PS3 aren't interested in the backwards compatibility. For one, every person on earth has a PS2. (That's not to say I don't want BC, I'm glad I got one of original PS3s and use it to play PS2 games with relative frequency. But even then...I play PS3 games much more often, as you'd expect.)

What Sony should do is take the 160 gig off the market, and remake it with all the same features as the original 60 gig, but with a 160gb hd and rerelease it at 400$ or so as a premium model or something.

Backwards compatibility isn't a HUGE issue for me, it would just be a convienence to have one PS hooked up and save the space of AV cables an shit. But my PS2 has a hacked top as an emulator to play old NES games on a disk. :awesome:

I'll probably get one anyway. I have a PSP Slim, PS2 Slim... may as well follow tradition. I'll live vicariously slim through my PS's. :monster:

"It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing,"

Based on what? As far as I can remember, a large part of the PS2's popularity was its backwards compatibility with the PS1, :monster:.

And really, wouldn't the PS3 have enough raw processing power to be able to run a PS2 emulator?

Not the way you'd think. I'm sure they could write a program which could pull it off, but apparently they have had trouble emulating the emotion engine on PS3 hardware.

Looks like we might be getting a slimmer model:

Remember that mysterious new PS3 variant that passed through the FCC not too long ago? Although that listing didn't have photos to confirm a redesign, a new one has hit Anatel (essentially Brazil's version of the FCC) with a quartet of pictures in tow. Specifically, it cites models CECH-4011A, CECH-4011B and CECH-4011C, matching up well with the 4K labeling from the aforementioned FCC visit -- if you'll recall, the current PS3 Slim has a 3K model number. According to Tecnoblog, the the three models point to a shockingly storage-cramped 16GB version, along with 250GB and 500GB variants. While this Anatel document appears to be from Sony, we'd be remiss not to mention that we haven't been able to load the photos as Tecnoblog has. In terms of looks, apart from appearing extra slim -- and decidedly less attractive -- the system notably seems to be rocking a top-loading disc drive (this would be a first for the PS3). For now, we'd advise taking this potential leak with a grain of salt, but rest assured that we'll inform you if we hear anything official from Sony.

Yeah, I heard about that yesterday and it definitely caught my interest, as I don't currently own a PS3 but would like to get one. I think the ridges on the top look horrendous though, so I'm hoping they get rid of those - if it's real.

I'm not really sure I see the point. These console are, what, six years old now? Seems like they'd be focused more on a new console. But hey, if it's still selling, may as well milk it.

Of course, if it's got backwards compatibility with PS2 it would definitely trump the current slim.

I'm just wondering how big it is compared to the original / previous smaller model, as well as power consumption etc.

I've got the current PS3 Slim... from that photo it looks slimmer, and although I can't see the width that's probably smaller too. Basing that on absolutely nothing, but meh. A top loading disc drive seems like a bit of a step backwards, but I suppose that'll make it cheaper.

Unless it has PS2 backwards compatibility (and I don't see that happening since they're making money off the PS2 classics store), it's probably not going to be worth it unless it's super duper cheapo.

I agree with yop, Im more interested on power consumption also as well as how well its fans work, ect.

@Lex, well Top loading disc drives may seem like a step back aesthetically but it does making disc swapping alot easier this could open the door for easier homebrew that may not be reliant on keeping your firmware in the stone age.

Fuck, my PS2 still works just fine.

And my PS3 seems to be used for nothing but Netflix nowadays. Should never have shown my roommates how to use it. :P

wtf why?

Hopefully this means the PS4 won't be coming any time soon, then. :P

I know this one guy on another forum who claims his buddy is in the know in the gaming industry.

He says bet the farm on new consoles coming up holiday 2013.

*This is a serious post btw* XD

Ah yeah, I got an e-mail from Playstation today with that in it. I really like the look of it.

EDIT: Why are they only releasing the flash 12GB one in Europe?

Also, 299 Euros =/= $299. Lol Sony, ripping us off as usual I see.

I'm somewhat surprised by the pricing too. I mean, I can pick up a 160GB Slim PS3 for a little over 200€ now. I would have thought that, if they were determined to revive the console's sales, they would have at least matched that, if not undercut it slightly.

Nevertheless, I've been waiting for this, and I am going to get one! :D
