Probably not. That last post was just because I hadn't really thought about it :P If I had to guess, I would say after I come back from my holiday in England, so that's the end of October / beginning of November.

I'm not sure how accurate the quoted prices are. The 500GB version is meant to be 299€, but I found it in the first place I looked for 239,90€.

That's still 10€ more than the current slim, but it's not so ridiculous. I mean, the new console still has two USB ports, still has an old standard of Bluetooth, still has old standards of Wifi (no 802.11n), still doesn't come with an HDMI cable, still doesn't have backwards compatibility, and so on. What advantages does it actually have, apart from being slightly smaller?

Well then you got the exact same thing only cheaper.

Yeah, and a bit smaller. My slim only just fits under the TV. I also wonder about hardware changes, particularly about energy efficiency Disregard that I don't care lol :monster:.

A 500GB Hard Drive. The current slim only goes to 320GB.

Of course. I just didn't really take that into consideration because 320GB already seems like a lot of space.

The more I see of the new console, the less I like it. Sony did quite a good job with the press release pictures, because from the videos I've seen, the console is seriously ugly. The slide-loading mechanism seems horrible too. I know those aren't really the most important parts of a console, but if I'm going to be spending a lot of money on one, I would like it to be a bit more desirable. Maybe if I see a slim PS3 in a clearance sale, I'll pick one up.

OK so I just watched this unboxing video:

My advice: unless you actually care about the extra space, I'd go for the old Slim. In terms of connectivity it's exactly the same, and tbh I'd hate that top loading drive. I'm too used to the slide drive.

Flint, my advice to you is go to like a pawn shop and by the ancient PS3 from there. If you're lucky you might get the model that also plays PS2 games (I think it was the 80GB). The thing about those is you can actually just put in a new hard drive if you're worried about space, which is much more difficult with the current slim. There's about 3 of these for sale in a Cash Converter's round the corner from where I live for £50 each.

I've had my PS3 Slim 320GB for 2 years and I still have 100GB of space left, and I'd say I download games quite frequently and never delete them. That's the model I recommend, but obviously I'm biased :monster:

320 GB is actually a pretty huge amount of space if you consider that even the latest bigass games for PC take up to 14 GBs in space at most (WoW would be an exception, being huge etc). And they're probably smaller. GT5 is one of the games that uses up the moast, at 10 GB or something.

Speaking of, don't get the flash (what is it, 8 - 12 GB?) model. Or maybe you can install a hard drive separately, I dunno.

The ridiculous thing about the flash drive is that it cannot be used alongside an additional hard drive. That is to say, you can install a new hard drive of whatever size (Sony are making their own 250GB version), but once you start using it, the flash drive is disabled.

Another option is to get an external USB drive and store everything you need on there. But tbh there's really no point in getting the flash version, you'd fit like one full sized PS3 game on there. I just downloaded red dead redemption and that was 10GB for example.

EDIT: Although I'm really interested to see what it does to load times for games stored on the drive.

A useful application would be to use the flash drive as a cache for the hard drive, as in, an SSD kinda thing - if it's fast enough, it would definitely have a big impact on loading times etc. But that's speculation atm.

I feel like I would break the sliding top immediately. I don't really like it at all. It is smaller, sure, and has more memory, but really, the space issue can always be solved by getting either an external hard drive or simply putting one with more in your current PS3. Hard drives are getting cheaper and cheaper, so I don't really see the point of buying a brand new PS3 which doesn't come with any real upgrades (still no HDMI cable included? Bah!).
