Honestly, it's a lot like Ingress was (since all the Pokéstops are built using Ingress portal locations), and it'd probably still be around as popular as that game got to be if it weren't Pokémon-related. But it is, so there's a MASSIVE fanbase coming in from the get-go with it, and I find that it's it's about as fun – less in some ways, more in others.
The first time you log in, a Pokemon will appear right where you are - so if you're at your desk, it'll be there! For me, it was a Squirtle, and I caught it in my bed
So the game is basically a location-based, sorta-augmented-reality game where all you can do is catch the pokemanz and nothing else? Missed opportunity there; at the very least they should've added a combat system. If only to catch le pokemanz. And with NPC's at the Ingress portal locations.
Like most people, Pokemon Go is my first experience with VR. It's incredible to see a map of my mundane small town suddenly littered with Pokemon and random landmarks in town transformed into elements of gameplay. I was ecstatic to see that there are actually plenty of gyms and stops in the area, considering this is an area that when featured in state news is always referred to as "that town you've never heard of" so and so miles from an "actual" town. There are surprisingly a fair amount of players in town already, and all of the gyms were claimed by the first 48 hours of the Australian release. This game has brought forth a new generation of online gaming where a game brings people in a physical community together, rather than just connect people all over the world. Arizona and particularly my immediate area is very diverse geographically, so at some point I'd like to hang out with some people by the local river and see what we can catch, provided our phone signals work.
My best friend and I had a great time and kicked off Pokemon Go for the first time together a few nights ago, walking around town. Despite not having much time since then, I have managed to grow a respectable team and evolve a Pidgey. I haven't battled in a gym, but I'm hoping the battle system is significantly more involved than catching Pokemon, because otherwise I might get bored rather quickly. But thus far, I've been ecstatic about the whole thing, being so novel and all.
These images ended up rather large, just as a forewarning.
Surprisingly, I've found some of the best of my Pokemon in my own apartment... I found the Meowth, Sandslash, and one of my Rhyhorns/Growlithes here (I trade duplicates for evolution candy).
My sister, my brother and I have been crusing all around town to catch the Pokeymans. I am embarassed to say how much I love this game. We go out walking. As long as kids are doing this too (and paying attention to where they are going) this could actually be a huge incentive to get out and be active.
Course they had to add microtransactions... :/
Still I am having an unashamed amount of fun with this.
